The accuracy with which power system transient stability limits can be calculated by computer simulation depends on the synchronous machine model. The saturation representation in the machine model ...can be improved now by non-linear magnetic finite element analyses of the machine. This paper describes steps taken to incorporate a saturation algorithm, based upon finite element analyses, into an 1100 bus power system stability program. Power transfer capability of a hypothetical system is compared using the finite element based algorithm versus the conventional algorithm based upon the manufacturer's open circuit saturation curve.

A number of crises or "bottle-neck" situations, most resulting from environmental changes, are described which caused radical re-alignments in social and subsistence systems. It is against this backdrop, together with generally conservative social systems, that the transformation from foraging to plant and animal husbandry should be viewed.
La dynamique des adaptations des hommes qui ont pris place au cours de l'Épipaléolithique et du Néolithique ancien à l'ouest du Rift dans la partie sud du Levant est décrite brièvement et évaluée par rapport aux fluctuations climatiques. Si l'on prend en compte les travaux récents sur l'environnement et les révisions importantes du cadre chronologique des diagrammes polliniques du Houleh, une corrélation s'établit, apparemment bonne, entre l'évolution culturelle et celle de l'environnement.
Est souligné le rôle joué par la nature variable des changements de l'environnement et la multitude des zones écologiques en dissociant les tendances à long terme, les changements climatiques brusques et les fluctuations moyennes annuelles prévisibles.
La nature et la flexibilité des réponses des communautés humaines à ces changements dépendent des combinaisons spécifiques de facteurs technologiques, sociaux, idéologiques et psychologiques.
Des niches favorables alternativement s'étendent ou se réduisent. À certaines périodes, en Cisjordanie, l'adaptation des hommes aux milieux s'opère différemment dans la région méditerranéenne et dans les régions steppe/désert. For epidemiologic studies of spondyloarthropathy in circumpolar peoples of Chukotka, Russia and Alaska, we gathered demographic, physical and laboratory data to provide a background for evaluating ...and comparing factors that may influence susceptibility and clinical expression of disease. The study groups included the Chukchi and Siberian Eskimo of Russia and the Inupiat and Yupik Eskimo of Alaska. The 4 groups were remarkably similar in population structure, educational attainment, mean hemoglobin concentrations and frequency of the Class I histocompatibility antigen HLAB27. The Alaskan and Chukotkan groups were similar in mean height, but the Alaskans had higher body weights and significantly greater body mass indexes, probably a reflection of a shift away from traditional lifestyle and diet. Differences in the frequencies of ABO and MN blood group antigens were also apparent, with higher frequencies of blood group M in the Alaskan populations, particularly the Inupiat.

We have studied patients with acute hot joints presenting to general practice, casualty and inpatient rheumatology services. Their investigation, management and outcome were measured against ...guidelines. Different spectra of disease were seen in the different health care settings. The guidelines were not adhered to for crystal arthritis, particularly when it affected the first metatarso-phalangeal joints. The guidelines were broadly adhered to and useful for other joints, especially where septic arthritis was considered to be the likely diagnosis. We found no benefit on outcome from adhering to the guidelines. There was a tendency for the outcome to be worse where the guidelines were followed in full, suggesting that more investigations are performed in the more difficult cases. We conclude that drawing up guidelines for patient management is difficult even in an area where there is broad medical agreement.
Les recherches préliminaires concernant l'organisation de l'espace des sites du Pléistocène récent au Négev et au Sinaï ont mis en évidence des différences notables qui paraissent correspondre à des ...entités socio-culturelles. Selon l'auteur, elles refléteraient à la fois des développements technologiques (p. ex. cuisson) et les traditions sociales des groupes concernés, au même titre que les traduisent les critères stylistiques de l'outillage lithique ou certains éléments décoratifs. Dans cette étude, les critères retenus sont la relation existant entre les structures fixes, tels que foyers ou mortiers creusés dans le roc, et les emplacements où s'exerçaient les différents types ď activités.
Les gisements les plus importants du Paléolithique Supérieur final sont caractérisés par des foyers multiples auxquels semblent correspondre des activités propres. Les sites du Kébarien géométrique présentent des foyers simples ouverts associés à des amas de cendre grise. Sur les plus grands gisements Moushabiens, se trouvent des foyers complexes ou foyers satellites. Les foyers en fosse sont dans l'ensemble relativement grands; leur sont associées des pierres brûlées et des cendres sombres qui attestent d'une combustion en atmosphère réductrice. On les retrouve lors des périodes suivantes (Ramonien et Natoufien); ils témoignent d'une innovation technologique relative à la cuisson. Au Natoufien, les maisons sont construites en pierre; on trouve encore les foyers en fosse à remplissage de pierres et, hors des sites, des mortiers creusés dans le rocher. Les camps de base du Harifien sont formés de cabanes individuelles semi-enterrées, séparées les unes des autres, comportant des dalles à cupules et des mortiers uniques creusés dans le rocher : en dépit de la densité des artefacts lithiques, il est possible de discerner à l'intérieur de chaque site des zones d'activité diversifiées.
Preliminary investigation of the organization of space within Terminal Pleistocene occupations in the Negev and Sinai reveals considerable patterning by socio-cultural entity. This is considered to reflect both technological developments (e.g. cooking), as well as the social traditions of the groups concerned, in much the same manner as the stylistic attributes of chipped stone tools and decorative elements. Primary determinants are immobile features, such as hearths, structures and bedrock mortars, with the location of various activities, depending upon their nature, positioned accordingly.
