= 8 per group); control, BPA (5 mg/kg), Pb (100 ppm), ES (0.61 mg/kg), BPA+Pb, BPA+ES, Pb+ES and BPA+P+ES. The rats were sacrificed after 65 days of treatment. Severe histopathological changes in the liver and kidney tissues were observed in the rats exposed to BPA+Pb+ES combination. Elevated malondialdehyde (MDA) in the liver and decreased superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) in the kidney tissue were detected in the BPA+Pb+ES group compared to those of the control group. It was found that serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine (CREA) levels were higher in the BPA+Pb+ES combination group than the control group. Also, combined exposure of BPA, Pb and ES caused apoptotic cell numbers and inducible nitric oxide (iNOS) to increase in the liver and kidney tissues. The results of the present study suggested that the BPA, Pb and ES caused more dramatic changes to both histological architecture and cell apoptosis in the liver and kidney tissues when there was a combined exposure.
Apelin is a bioactive mediator released by adipose tissue that can be involved in energy metabolism events and coronary artery disease. Obesity in children appears to be associated with increased risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases later in life. Early development of insulin resistance (IR) may lead to endothelial ...dysfunction and increased carotid intima–media thickness (cIMT) even in childhood. We compared endothelial cell-specific molecule-1 (endocan) levels in pediatric obese patients with those in healthy controls to determine whether endocan could be used as a biological marker of complications caused by endothelial damage. In 80 obese pubertal children (44 males M and 36 females F, mean age: 12.8 ± 2.5 years), anthropometric measurements, cIMT, endocan levels, and IR indices (homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance HOMA-IR) were evaluated and compared with 80 healthy pubertal patients (42M/38F, mean age: 12.3 ± 3.2 years). High-resolution ultrasound was used to measure the cIMT. Obese children had higher levels of endocan compared with the controls (P < .001). Fasting insulin levels and HOMA-IR were also higher in obese children (P < .001 for both). In addition, obese children had an increased cIMT (P < .001). In obese children, there was a significant correlation between cIMT and HOMA-IR (β = −1.314, P = .002) and between cIMT and endocan (β = .483, P = .004). Measuring cIMT and endocan levels (noninvasive investigations) in obese children, together with early preventive measures, could significantly decrease morbidity and mortality in adulthood.

Background: Tumour necrosis factor like cytokine 1A (TL1A), which is a member of tumour necrosis factor alpha superfamily (TNF-α), is a novel indicator of atherosclerosis.
Objective: Smoking is an ...established stimulant of TNF-α. We aimed to investigate whether TLA1 plays a role in the presence and complexity of coronary artery atherosclerosis, exclusively in non-smoking patients with CAD.
Methods: We enrolled 103 participants in the study, who underwent coronary angiography for stable angina pectoris. We divided the study population into 2 groups: The CAD group consisted of 62 patients with CAD and the control group consisted of 41 subjects with non-CAD. SYNTAX and Gensini scores, indicating CAD severity and complexity, were analysed as well as TLA1 levels.
Results: TLA1 levels was higher in patients with CAD than those in controls (228119-824 vs 17815-418pg/ml, p < 0.001). Presence of CAD (β ± SE = 106.29 ± 33.11, p = 0.002), Syntax score (β ± SE= 6.57 ± 1.75, p = 0.012), and Gensini score (β ± SE = 2.30 ± 0.65, p = 0.001) were found to be predictors of TL1A levels. Gensini score and Syntax score were positively correlated with TL1A levels (r = 0.420, p < 0.001, and r = 0.402, p < 0.001, respectively).
Conclusions: Non-smoker CAD patients have higher TLA1 levels that are promising biomarker for diagnosing CAD and indicating CAD lesion complexity.
Amaç: Son yıllarda inflamasyon göstergesi olarak değerlendirilen C-reaktif proteinin (CRP)/ortalama trombosit hacmi (OTH) oranı ve beyaz küre sayısı (BKS)/ortalama trombosit hacmi (OTH) oranının ...toplum kökenli pnömonili (TKP) çocuklarda tanı ve hastalık şiddeti ile ilişkisini araştırmaktır.
Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışma TKP tanısı alan 3 ay ile 18 yaş arasında 60 hasta ve 30 sağlıklı çocuktan oluşturuldu. Hasta ve kontrol grubunda CRP, BKS, OTH, nötrofil/lenfosit oranı (NLO) değerleri ile birlikte CRP/OTH ve BKS/OTH değerleri incelendi.
Bulgular: Hasta ve kontrol grubu arasında OTH düzeyleri açısından anlamlı fark saptanmazken, CRP/OTH, BKS/OTH, NLO ve plateletkrit düzeyleri hasta grubunda anlamlı olarak yüksek bulundu. Ciddi pnömonili hasta grubunda (n=27) BKS, NLO, BKS/OTH, CRP/OTH ve CRP düzeyleri hafif-ılımlı pnömonili gruba (n=33) göre anlamlı olarak yüksek saptandı. CRP/OTH ve BKS/OTH oranlarının hastalık belirtilerinin süresiyle arasında pozitif korelasyon gösterildi. Receiver Operating Characteric (ROC) analizinde CRP (Eğri altındaki alan (EAA)=0.801), BKS (EAA=0.761) ve BKS/OTH (EAA=0.731) düzeylerinin TKP’nin tanısında yeterliliği anlamlı bulundu. Ciddi TKP’li hastaların ayrımında ise CRP/OTH (EAA=0.733) ve CRP (EAA=0.708) düzeyleri anlamlı bulundu.
Sonuç: CRP/OTH ve BKS/OTH oranları TKP tanısının değerlendirilmesinde ve CRP/OTH oranı hastalık aktivitesinin belirlenmesinde iyi bir belirteç olabileceğini göstermektedir.

Bu çalışmada tip 2 diyabetes mellitus (T2DM) hastalarında gözlenen mikroalbuminüri ile serum C ...peptit düzeylerinin ilişkili olup olmadığını analiz etmeyi amaçladık.Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu amaçla 184 tip 2 diyabet hastası ve 46 sağlıklı kontrol çalışmaya alındı. Hastaların klinik özellikleri ve rutin biyokimyasal tetkiklerine ek olarak serum C peptit seviyeleri kaydedildi. Serum C peptit normal aralığı 1.1-4.4 olarak kabul edildi. Hastalardan 24 saatlik idrar toplanarak araştırıldı ve 30-300 mg aralığı mikroalbuminuri olarak kaydedildi. Değişkenler arasındaki ilişkiyi ortaya koymak amacıyla Pearson korelasyon analizi kullanıldı.Bulgular: Tip 2 diyabet hastaları sağlıklı control grubu ile karşılaştırıldığında C peptit düzeyleri arasında anlamlı farklılık saptanmadı. Pearson korelasyon analizinde C peptit düzeyleri, insulin ve mikroalbuminuri arasında pozitif korelasyon olduğu görüldü. Bununla birlikte C –peptit ve diğer değişkenler arasında anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmadı.Sonuç: Bu çalışmada serum C peptit düzeyleri ile mikroalbuminüri varlığının ilişkili olduğunu gösterdik. Bulgular C peptitin T2DM hastalarında renal komplikasyonları ile ilişkili olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır

The aim of this study is to analyze whether there is an association between serum C-peptide level and microalbuminuria in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).Materials and Methods: We enrolled 184 T2DM patents and 46 healthy subjects in this study. Clinical variables and routine biochemical tests along with serum C peptide levels measured after an overnight fasting. Serum C peptide levels between 1.1 and 4.4 accepted as normal. 24-hour-urine samples were investigated and values between 30-300mgwere recorded as microalbuminuria. Pearson correlation analysis were used to determine associations between continuous variables.Results: C peptide levels were not significantly difference in T2DM patients compared to healthy controls. Serum C peptide levels showed positive correlation with insülin and microalbminuria with the Pearson correlation analysis. However, there was no significant association between other variables and C peptide levels.Conclusion: A correlation was found between microalbuminuria and serum C-peptide in this present study. Findings suggest C-peptide is related with renal complications of T2DM patients.
Anecdotal reports suggest that using retinoids with vitamin E leads to improvements of some side effects due to isotretinoin. However, vitamin E blood levels have not been reported previously in ...patients with acne treated with isotretinoin. We aimed to investigate the serum vitamin E levels before and after isotretinoin therapy in patients with acne. A total of 70 patients treated with isotretinoin for acne in our dermatology department were included in this study. The serum vitamin E levels were measured as baseline before isotretinoin treatment. All patients received 0.6–0.8 mg/kg/d isotretinoin. The treatment was finished within 5–7 months while ensuring that the cumulative dose was 120 mg/kg. Serum vitamin E levels were measured again in the last month of treatment. The mean serum vitamin E levels before and after treatment were compared. Forty‐six patients completed the study. It was detected that the mean serum vitamin E level was 20.22 mg/dl before isotretinoin treatment. In the last month of treatment, the mean serum vitamin E level was 16.24 mg/dl. Serum vitamin E levels decreased in all patients except three. The mean serum vitamin E level after treatment was statistically decreased in comparison with the mean serum vitamin E level before treatment. Our results showed that vitamin E levels decreased during isotretinoin treatment. We considered that some of the side effects due to isotretinoin treatment might be related to this, and supplementation vitamin E may be useful during isotretinoin treatment.
