In 2005, the ANTARES Collaboration deployed and operated at a depth of 2500m a so-called Mini Instrumentation Line equipped with Optical Modules (MILOM) at the ANTARES site. The various data acquired ...during the continuous operation from April to December 2005 of the MILOM confirm the satisfactory performance of the Optical Modules, their front-end electronics and readout system, as well as the calibration devices of the detector. The in situ measurement of the Optical Module time response yields a resolution better than 0.5ns. The performance of the acoustic positioning system, which enables the spatial reconstruction of the ANTARES detector with a precision of about 10cm, is verified. These results demonstrate that with the full ANTARES neutrino telescope the design angular resolution of better than 0.3° can be realistically achieved.
The Fanout system is part of the Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT), a new trigger processor designed to reconstruct charged particle trajectories at level 2 (L2) of the CDF trigger, with a latency of 10 .../spl mu/s and an event rate up to 100 kHz. The core of SVT is organized as 12 identical slices, which process in parallel the data from the 12 independent azimuthal wedges of the Silicon Vertex Detector (SVXII). Each SVT slice links the digitized pulse heights found within one SVXII wedge to the tracks reconstructed by the level I (L1) fast track finder (XFT) in the corresponding 30/spl deg/ angular region of the Central Outer Tracker (COT). Since the XFT tracks are transmitted to SVT as a single data stream, their distribution to the proper SVT slices requires dedicated fanout logic. The fanout system has been implemented as a multiboard project running on a common 20 MHz clock. Track fanout is performed in two steps by one "Fanout A" and two "Fanout B" boards. The architecture, design, and implementation of this system are described.

We present a device, based on the concept of associative memory for pattern recognition, dedicated to on-line track finding in high-energy physics experiments. A large pattern bank, describing all ...possible tracks, can be organized into Field Programmable Gate Arrays where all patterns are compared in parallel to data coming from the detector during readout. Patterns, recognized among 2
66 possible combinations, are output in a few 30
MHz clock cycles. Programmability results in a flexible, simple architecture and it allows to keep up smoothly with technology improvements.

The status of the activities towards the realization of a km3 Cherenkov neutrino detector carried out by the NEMO Collaboration is described. The realization of a Phase-1 project, which is under way, ...will validate the proposed technologies for the realization of the km3 detector on a Test Site at 2000m depth. The realization of a new infrastructure on the candidate site (Phase-2 project) will provide the possibility to test detector components at 3500m depth.

ANTARES is a neutrino telescope being deployed in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of a three-dimensional array of photomultiplier tubes that can detect the Cherenkov light induced by charged ...particles produced in the interactions of neutrinos with the surrounding medium. High angular resolution can be achieved, in particular, when a muon is produced, provided that the Cherenkov photons are detected with sufficient timing precision. Considerations of the intrinsic time uncertainties stemming from the transit time spread in the photomultiplier tubes and the mechanism of transmission of light in sea water lead to the conclusion that a relative time accuracy of the order of 0.5
ns is desirable. Accordingly, different time calibration systems have been developed for the ANTARES telescope. In this article, a system based on Optical Beacons, a set of external and well-controlled pulsed light sources located throughout the detector, is described. This calibration system takes into account the optical properties of sea water, which is used as the detection volume of the ANTARES telescope. The design, tests, construction and first results of the two types of beacons, LED and laser-based, are presented.
The K+→π+νν‾ decay is theoretically one of the cleanest meson decays and so a good place to look for indirect effects of new physics complementary to LHC searches. The NA62 experiment at CERN is ...designed to measure the branching ratio of this decay with 10% precision. NA62 was commissioned in October 2014, took data in pilot runs in 2014 and 2015. The NA62 experimental setup is illustrated and data quality is reported.
The analysis of coiling direction preference in the benthic foraminifera
Cibicidoides pseudoacutus (Nakkady) has been carried out across the Cretaceous–Tertiary boundary (K–T boundary) from four ...Tunisian sections representing a palaeobathymetric transect from a middle–outer neritic to lower upper bathyal depositional setting. Our study reveals that
C. pseudoacutus developed a preference for sinistral coiling in a short time period during the lowermost Danian.
The comparison of the coiling ratio (number of sinistral vs. dextral individuals) record with isotope data and dinoflagellate cyst assemblage distribution suggests that the development of sinistrally coiled populations of
Cibicidoides pseudoacutus might be related to a short-term cooling of both surface and bottom waters which occurred at the K–T boundary and lasted for some 7 kyr.
The continuous occurrence and the high abundance of
Cibicidoides pseudoacutus through the K–T boundary in neritic to upper bathyal depositional environments around southern Tethys make identification of the shift in its coiling ratio relatively easy. The development of a sinistrally coiled population in this benthic foraminiferal species is regarded as a potential marker for the base of planktonic foraminiferal Zone P0 in Tethyan shallow water settings.
In this paper we propose highly parallel dedicated processors, able to provide precise on-line track reconstruction for future hadronic collider experiments. The processors, organized in a 2-level ...pipelined architecture, execute very fast algorithms based on the use of a large bank of pre-stored patterns of trajectory points. An associative memory implements the first stage by recognizing track candidates at low resolution to match the demanding task of tracking at the detector readout rate. Alternative technological implementations for the associative memory are compared. The second stage receives track candidates and high resolution hits to refine pattern recognition at the associative memory output rate. A parallel and pipelined hardware implements a binary search strategy inside a hierarchically structured pattern bank, stored in high density commercial RAMs.

Among the meson decays, K→πνν‾ are the cleanest environment, from the theoretical point of view, where to search for new physics effects. The NA62 Experiment at CERN SPS aims to measure the ...BR(K+→π+νν‾) with a 10% precision by the end of 2018. It has been commissioned with technical runs in 2014 and 2015, and some preliminary results of the detector performances and quality of data are here reported.
