The concept of stars being tidally ripped apart and consumed by a massive black hole (MBH) lurking in the center of a galaxy first captivated theorists in the late 1970s. The observational evidence ...for these rare but illuminating phenomena for probing otherwise dormant MBHs first emerged in archival searches of the soft X-ray ROSAT All-Sky Survey in the 1990s, but has recently accelerated with the increasing survey power in the optical time domain, with tidal disruption events (TDEs) now regarded as a class of optical nuclear transients with distinct spectroscopic features. Multiwavelength observations of TDEs have revealed panchromatic emission, probing a wide range of scales, from the innermost regions of the accretion flow to the surrounding circumnuclear medium. I review the current census of 56 TDEs reported in the literature, and their observed properties can be summarized as follows:
The optical light curves follow a power-law decline from peak that scales with the inferred central black hole mass as expected for the fallback rate of the stellar debris, but the rise time does not.
The UV-optical and soft X-ray thermal emission come from different spatial scales, and their intensity ratio has a large dynamic range and is highly variable, providing important clues as to what is powering the two components.
They can be grouped into three spectral classes, and those with Bowen fluorescence line emission show a preference for a hotter and more compact line-emitting region, whereas those with only He
ii
emission lines are the rarest class.
Abstract
The close encounter of a white dwarf (WD) with a black hole (BH) could result in the tidal disruption of the WD. During this encounter, the WD can undergo a thermonuclear explosion due to ...its tidal compression, resulting in an optical transient similar to a Type Ia supernova, hereafter a Ia-TDE. Nevertheless, this will only be physically observable if the BH is ≲10

. Finding a Ia-TDE would therefore imply the discovery of an intermediate-mass BH (IMBH) ≲10

. Here, we search the entire Zwicky Transient Facility alert stream for these elusive Ia-TDEs. We restrict our search to nuclear transients in dwarf galaxies, the likely sites for IMBHs, and find a total of six possible nuclear Ia-TDE candidates. We find SN 2020lrt to be the most likely Ia-TDE candidate, thanks to its strong resemblance to light-curve and spectroscopic models of Ia-TDEs. We measure the stellar masses of the dwarf galaxies hosting these transients to be ≲10

M
⊙
; if confirmed to harbor BHs, these would prove the existence of IMBHs in some of the lowest-mass galaxies known. Additionally, we searched for off-nuclear Ia-TDEs, but were unable to find more robust candidates in the outskirts of galaxies than in their nuclei. This supports the hypothesis that the nuclear Ia-TDE candidates are WDs tidally compressed by IMBHs in the cores of galaxies, as opposed to a class of transient that can occur anywhere in a galaxy. We have laid the groundwork to systematically search for Ia-TDE candidates in existing and future time-domain surveys. The rapid characterization of their nature will result in not only the confirmation of a Ia-TDE, but also the unambiguous discovery of bona fide IMBHs.
Graham et al. reported a periodically varying quasar and supermassive black hole binary candidate, PG1302-102 (hereafter PG1302), which was discovered in the Catalina Real-time Transient Survey ...(CRTS). Its combined Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) and CRTS optical light curve is well fitted to a sinusoid of an observed period of 1884 days and well modeled by the relativistic Doppler boosting of the secondary mini-disk. However, the LINEAR+CRTS light curve from MJD 52,700 to MJD 56,400 covers only ∼2 cycles of periodic variation, which is a short baseline that can be highly susceptible to normal, stochastic quasar variability. In this Letter, we present a reanalysis of PG1302 using the latest light curve from the All-sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN), which extends the observational baseline to the present day (MJD 58,200), and adopting a maximum likelihood method that searches for a periodic component in addition to stochastic quasar variability. When the ASAS-SN data are combined with the previous LINEAR+CRTS data, the evidence for periodicity decreases. For genuine periodicity one would expect that additional data would strengthen the evidence, so the decrease in significance may be an indication that the binary model is disfavored.

The origin of thermal optical and UV emission from stellar tidal disruption flares (TDFs) remains an open question. We present
Hubble Space Telescope
far-UV (FUV) observations of eight ...optical/UV-selected TDFs 5–10 yr post-peak. Six sources are cleanly detected, showing point-like FUV emission (
) from the centers of their host galaxies. We discover that the light curves of TDFs from low-mass black holes (<10
6.5
M
⊙
) show significant late-time flattening. Conversely, FUV light curves from high-mass black hole TDFs are generally consistent with an extrapolation from the early-time light curve. The observed late-time emission cannot be explained by existing models for early-time TDF light curves (i.e., reprocessing or circularization shocks), but is instead consistent with a viscously spreading, unobscured accretion disk. These disk models can only reproduce the observed FUV luminosities, however, if they are assumed to be thermally and viscously stable, in contrast to the simplest predictions of
α
-disk theory. For one TDF in our sample, we measure an upper limit to the UV luminosity that is significantly lower than expectations from theoretical modeling and an extrapolation of the early-time light curve. This dearth of late-time emission could be due to a disk instability/state change absent in the rest of the sample. The disk models that explain the late-time UV detections solve the TDF “missing energy problem” by radiating a rest-mass energy of ∼0.1
M
⊙
over a period of decades, primarily in extreme UV wavelengths.
ABSTRACT
We present new medium resolution, optical long-slit spectra of a sample of six ultraviolet (UV)/optical and 17 X-ray-selected tidal disruption event candidate host galaxies. We measure ...emission line ratios from the optical spectra, finding that the large majority of hosts are quiescent galaxies, while those displaying emission lines are generally consistent with star formation dominated environments; only three sources show clear evidence of nuclear activity. We measure bulge velocity dispersions using absorption lines and infer host black hole (BH) masses using the M – σ relation. While the optical and X-ray host BH masses are statistically consistent with coming from the same parent distribution, the optical host distribution has a visible peak near $M_{\rm BH} \sim 10^6 \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$, whereas the X-ray host distribution appears flat in MBH. We find a subset of X-ray-selected candidates that are hosted in galaxies significantly less luminous (Mg ∼ −16) and less massive (stellar mass ∼ 108.5–9 M⊙) than those of optical events. Using statistical tests we find suggestive evidence that, in terms of BH mass, stellar mass, and absolute magnitude, the hard X-ray hosts differ from the UV/optical and soft X-ray samples. Similar to individual studies, we find that the size of the emission region for the soft X-ray sample is much smaller than the optical emission region, consistent with a compact accretion disc. We find that the typical Eddington ratio of the soft X-ray emission is ∼ 0.01, as opposed to the optical events which have LBB ∼ LEdd. The latter seems artificial if the radiation is produced by self-intersection shocks, and instead suggests a connection to the supermassive black hole.

The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) has discovered five events (0.01 <
z
< 0.4) belonging to an emerging class of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) undergoing smooth, large-amplitude, and ...rapidly rising flares. This sample consists of several transients initially classified as supernovae with narrow spectral lines. However, upon closer inspection, all of the host galaxies display Balmer lines with FWHM(H
β
) ∼ 900–1400 km s
−1
, characteristic of a narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxy. The transient events are long lived, over 400 days on average in the observed frame. We report UV and X-ray follow-up of the flares and observe persistent UV emission, with two of the five transients detected with luminous X-ray emission, ruling out a supernova interpretation. We compare the properties of this sample to previously reported flaring NLSy1 galaxies and find that they fall into three spectroscopic categories: 1) Balmer line profiles and Fe
ii
complexes typical of NLSy1s, 2) strong He
ii
profiles, and 3) He
ii
profiles including Bowen fluorescence features. The latter are members of the growing class of AGN flares attributed to enhanced accretion reported by Trakhtenbrot et al. We consider physical interpretations in the context of related transients from the literature. For example, two of the sources show high-amplitude rebrightening in the optical, ruling out a simple tidal disruption event scenario for those transients. We conclude that three of the sample belong to the Trakhtenbrot et al. class and two are tidal disruption events in NLSy1s. We also hypothesize as to why NLSy1s are preferentially the sites of such rapid enhanced flaring activity.
Tidal forces close to massive black holes can violently disrupt stars that make a close approach. These extreme events are discovered via bright X-ray and optical/ultraviolet flares in galactic ...centres. Prior studies based on modelling decaying flux trends have been able to estimate broad properties, such as the mass accretion rate. Here we report the detection of flows of hot, ionized gas in high-resolution X-ray spectra of a nearby tidal disruption event, ASASSN-14li in the galaxy PGC 043234. Variability within the absorption-dominated spectra indicates that the gas is relatively close to the black hole. Narrow linewidths indicate that the gas does not stretch over a large range of radii, giving a low volume filling factor. Modest outflow speeds of a few hundred kilometres per second are observed; these are below the escape speed from the radius set by variability. The gas flow is consistent with a rotating wind from the inner, super-Eddington region of a nascent accretion disk, or with a filament of disrupted stellar gas near to the apocentre of an elliptical orbit. Flows of this sort are predicted by fundamental analytical theory and more recent numerical simulations.
Abstract We present a systematic analysis of the X-ray emission of a sample of 17 optically selected, X-ray-detected tidal disruption events (TDEs) discovered between 2014 and 2021. The X-ray light ...curves show a diverse range of temporal behaviors, with most sources not following the expected power-law decline. The X-ray spectra are mostly extremely soft and consistent with thermal emission from the innermost region of an accretion disk, which cools as the accretion rate decreases. Three sources show formation of a hard X-ray corona at late times. The spectral energy distribution shape, probed by the ratio ( L BB / L X ) between the UV/optical and X-ray, shows a wide range of L BB / L X ∈ (0.5, 3000) at early times and converges to disklike values of L BB / L X ∈ (0.5, 10) at late times. We estimate the fraction of optically discovered TDEs with L X ≥ 10 42 erg s −1 to be at least 40% and show that X-ray loudness is independent of black hole mass. We argue that distinct disk formation timescales are unlikely to be able to explain the diverse range of X-ray evolution. We combine our sample with X-ray-discovered ones to construct an X-ray luminosity function, best fit by a broken power law, with a break at L X ≈ 10 44 erg s −1 . We show that there is no dichotomy between optically and X-ray-selected TDEs; instead, there is a continuum of early-time L BB / L X , at least as wide as L BB / L X ∈ (0.1, 3000), with optical/X-ray surveys selecting preferentially, but not exclusively, from the higher/lower end of the distribution. Our findings are consistent with unification models for the overall TDE population.

Abstract AT2022cmc was recently reported as the first on-axis jetted tidal disruption event (TDE) discovered in the last decade, and the fourth on-axis jetted TDE candidate known so far. In this ...work, we present NuSTAR hard X-ray (3–30 keV) observations of AT2022cmc, as well as soft X-ray (0.3–6 keV) observations obtained by NICER, Swift, and XMM-Newton. Our analysis reveals that the broadband X-ray spectra can be well described by a broken power law with f ν ∝ ν −0.5 ( f ν ∝ ν −1 ) below (above) the rest-frame break energy of E bk ∼ 10 keV at the observer frame t obs = 7.8 and 17.6 days since discovery. At t obs = 36.2 days, the X-ray spectrum is consistent with either a single power law or a broken power law. By modeling the spectral energy distribution from radio to hard X-ray across the three NuSTAR observing epochs, we find that the submillimeter/radio emission originates from external shocks at large distances ≳10 17 cm from the black hole, the UV/optical light comes from a thermal envelope with radius ∼10 15 cm, and the X-ray emission is consistent with synchrotron radiation powered by energy dissipation at intermediate radii within the (likely magnetically dominated) jet. We constrain the bulk Lorentz factor of the jet to be of the order 10–100. Our interpretation differs from the model proposed by Pasham et al. where both the radio and X-rays come from the same emitting zone in a matter-dominated jet. Our model for the jet X-ray emission has broad implications on the nature of relativistic jets in other sources such as gamma-ray bursts.
