The coleoid cephalopods (cuttlefish, octopus, and squid) are a group of soft-bodied mollusks that exhibit a wealth of complex behaviors, including dynamic camouflage, object mimicry, skin-based ...visual communication, and dynamic body patterns during sleep. Many of these behaviors are visually driven and engage the animals’ color changing skin, a pixelated display that is directly controlled by neurons projecting from the brain. Thus, cephalopod skin provides a direct readout of neural activity in the brain. During camouflage, cephalopods recreate on their skin an approximation of what they see, providing a window into perceptual processes in the brain. Additionally, cephalopods communicate their internal state during social encounters using innate skin patterns, and create waves of pigmentation on their skin during periods of arousal. Thus, by leveraging the visual displays of cephalopods, we can gain insight into how the external world is represented in the brain and how this representation is transformed into a recapitulation of the world on the skin. Here, we describe the rich skin behaviors of the coleoid cephalopods, what is known about cephalopod neuroanatomy, and how advancements in gene editing, machine learning, optical imaging, and electrophysiological tools may provide an opportunity to explore the neural bases of these fascinating behaviors.

Objective Aneurysm growth after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) in patients with type II endoleak is associated with adverse outcomes. This study evaluated the long-term success of embolization ...of type II endoleaks in preventing aneurysm sac growth. Methods We retrospectively reviewed outcomes of patients who underwent infrarenal EVAR who were treated for a type II endoleak between 2000 and 2008. Computed tomography scans were evaluated for aneurysm sac growth or shrinkage from the time of treatment of the endoleak. The embolization material used, graft type, target vessel embolized, and comorbidities were evaluated for their association with sac growth or shrinkage. Results Ninety-five patients underwent 140 embolization procedures. The mean time from EVAR to embolization was 26.1 ± 22.2 months, and the average increase in size of the aneurysm sac from EVAR to treatment was 0.7 × 0.5 cm. Patients underwent an average of 1.6 ± 0.8 embolization procedures after EVAR. Thirteen patients underwent initial simultaneous embolization of two targets. Embolization was with glue (61%), coils (29%), glue and coils (7%), and Gelfoam (3%; Pfizer Inc, New York, NY). No abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) ruptured. Eight patients (8.4%) underwent graft explant and open repair; 19 (20%) required two or more embolization procedures. There was no difference in the target vessel treated or the treatment used in halting sac expansion (>5 mm). Coil embolization alone resulted in more second procedures. The 5-year cumulative survival was 65% (95% confidence interval CI, 52%-77%), freedom from explant was 89% (95% CI, 81%-97%), freedom from second embolization was 76% (95% CI, 66%-86%), and freedom from sac expansion >5 mm was 44% (95% CI 30%-50%). Univariable analysis identified continued tobacco use (hazard ratio HR, 2.30; 95% CI, 1.02-5.13; P = .04) was associated with continued sac expansion, and hyperlipidemia (HR, 9.64; 95% CI, 2.22-41.86) was associated with patients requiring a second embolization procedure. Conclusions Embolization of type II endoleaks is successful early in preventing aneurysm sac growth and rupture after EVAR. However, a significant number of patients require more than one procedure, and at 5 years, many patients who underwent embolization of a type II endoleak continued to experience sac growth. Patients with hyperlipidemia who undergo coil embolization are more likely to require a second embolization procedure, and patients who smoke have a higher likelihood of AAA sac expansion after embolization. Continued long-term surveillance is necessary in this cohort of patients.
Small and medium-sized business in Africa, which are vital to the growth of emerging African economies, have extremely limited access to the capital needed to grow, resulting in a $330 million annual ...funding gap in sub-Saharan Africa alone. The nascent financial technology of equity crowdfunding has shown the potential to close this funding gap by allowing international investors to invest in these African small businesses. Although equity crowdfunding holds this promise, a number of obstacles must be overcome for such a system to succeed. Investment in startup companies is a speculative proposition anywhere; in developing economies like those in Africa, the risks are amplified significantly. Less information is available to investors, political risk can threaten returns, and fraud protections must be put in place to protect the investors. Therefore, a new crowdfunding-friendly regulatory regime that borrows the successful provisions from existing systems, combined with an international intermediary to implement and enforce the regime should be created to facilitate foreign investment through equity crowdfunding. This note examines the risks associated with such an investment vehicle and proposes a framework for necessary regulation and intermediary that would allow equity crowdfunding to grow the emerging economies of Africa.
Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging as a promising platform for solar energy conversion applications. Their potential utilization as efficient chromophores in artificial photosynthesis is ...closely related to the understanding of light-harvesting and energy transfer processes that occur within these molecular scaffolds. Herein, we present the photophysical investigation of Ru(II), Ir(III), and Os(II) polypyridyl complexes incorporated into the backbone of UiO-67. In this work, we systematically study the effect of spin–orbit coupling on dipole–dipole energy transfer in MOFs using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. The results of our work indicate successful triplet-to-singlet energy transfer and a sizable increase in the transfer kinetics and critical distance, as direct consequences of strong spin–orbit couplings. Remarkably, the reported R 0 value for OsDCBPY (R 0 = 88 ± 10 Å) represents one of the largest Förster distances observed in an MOF. Collectively, this work contributes to the general knowledge of energy transfer in materials and provides groundwork for efficient utilization in artificial photosynthetic assemblies.
This is our ninth annual horizon scan to identify emerging issues that we believe could affect global biological diversity, natural capital and ecosystem services, and conservation efforts. Our ...diverse and international team, with expertise in horizon scanning, science communication, as well as conservation science, practice, and policy, reviewed 117 potential issues. We identified the 15 that may have the greatest positive or negative effects but are not yet well recognised by the global conservation community. Themes among these topics include new mechanisms driving the emergence and geographic expansion of diseases, innovative biotechnologies, reassessments of global change, and the development of strategic infrastructure to facilitate global economic priorities.

Twenty-four experts in conservation research and practice, ecology, economics, policy, and science communication identified 15 topics following a wide consultation. They followed a Delphi like process to score and identify the most important.
The issues highlighted span a wide range of fields and include thiamine deficiency in wild animals, the geographic expansion of chronic wasting disease, genetic control of invasive mammal populations and the effect of culturomics on conservation science, policy and action.
We present the results of our eighth annual horizon scan of emerging issues likely to affect global biological diversity, the environment, and conservation efforts in the future. The potential ...effects of these novel issues might not yet be fully recognized or understood by the global conservation community, and the issues can be regarded as both opportunities and risks. A diverse international team with collective expertise in horizon scanning, science communication, and conservation research, practice, and policy reviewed 100 potential issues and identified 15 that qualified as emerging, with potential substantial global effects. These issues include new developments in energy storage and fuel production, sand extraction, potential solutions to combat coral bleaching and invasive marine species, and blockchain technology.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a feature of type I and type II diabetes, but there is a lack of consistency between reports and links to disease development. We aimed to investigate if mitochondrial ...structure-function remodelling occurs in the early stages of diabetes by employing a mouse model (GENA348) of Maturity Onset Diabetes in the Young, exhibiting hyperglycemia, but not hyperinsulinemia, with mild left ventricular dysfunction. Employing 3-D electron microscopy (SBF-SEM) we determined that compared to wild-type, WT, the GENA348 subsarcolemma mitochondria (SSM) are ~ 2-fold larger, consistent with up-regulation of fusion proteins Mfn1, Mfn2 and Opa1. Further, in comparison, GENA348 mitochondria are more irregular in shape, have more tubular projections with SSM projections being longer and wider. Mitochondrial density is also increased in the GENA348 myocardium consistent with up-regulation of PGC1-α and stalled mitophagy (down-regulation of PINK1, Parkin and Miro1). GENA348 mitochondria have more irregular cristae arrangements but cristae dimensions and density are similar to WT. GENA348 Complex activity (I, II, IV, V) activity is decreased but the OCR is increased, potentially linked to a shift towards fatty acid oxidation due to impaired glycolysis. These novel data reveal that dysregulated mitochondrial morphology, dynamics and function develop in the early stages of diabetes.

The experimental objectives, expedition organization, measurements and key cohort data are discussed. The select data presented in this manuscript demonstrate the haematological differences between lowlanders and Andeans with and without excessive erythrocytosis. The data also demonstrate that exercise capacity was similar between study groups at high altitude. The forthcoming findings from our research expedition will contribute to our understanding of lowlander and indigenous highlander high altitude adaptation.
In 2016, the international research team Global Research Expedition on Altitude Related Chronic Health (Global REACH) was established and executed a high altitude research expedition to Nepal. The team consists of ∼45 students, principal investigators and physicians with the common objective of conducting experiments focused on high altitude adaptation in lowlanders and in highlanders with lifelong exposure to high altitude. In 2018, Global REACH travelled to Peru, where we performed a series of experiments in the Andean highlanders. The experimental objectives, organization and characteristics, and key cohort data from Global REACH's latest research expedition are outlined herein. Fifteen major studies are described that aimed to elucidate the physiological differences in high altitude acclimatization between lowlanders (n = 30) and Andean‐born highlanders with (n = 22) and without (n = 45) excessive erythrocytosis. After baseline testing in Kelowna, BC, Canada (344 m), Global REACH travelled to Lima, Peru (∼80 m) and then ascended by automobile to Cerro de Pasco, Peru (∼4300 m), where experiments were conducted over 25 days. The core studies focused on elucidating the mechanism(s) governing cerebral and peripheral vascular function, cardiopulmonary regulation, exercise performance and autonomic control. Despite encountering serious logistical challenges, each of the proposed studies was completed at both sea level and high altitude, amounting to ∼780 study sessions and >3000 h of experimental testing. Participant demographics and data relating to acid–base balance and exercise capacity are presented. The collective findings will contribute to our understanding of how lowlanders and Andean highlanders have adapted under high altitude stress.
Pentoxifylline is a nonselective phosphodiesterase inhibitor used for the treatment of peripheral artery disease. Pentoxifylline acts through cyclic adenosine monophosphate, thereby enhancing red ...blood cell deformability, causing vasodilation and decreasing inflammation, and potentially stimulating ventilation. We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover, counter-balanced study to test the hypothesis that pentoxifylline could lower blood viscosity, enhance cerebral blood flow, and decrease pulmonary artery pressure in lowlanders following 11-14 days at 3,800 m. Participants (6 males/10 females; age, 27 ± 4 yr old) received either a placebo or 400 mg of pentoxifylline orally the night before and again 2 h before testing. We assessed arterial blood gases, venous hemorheology (blood viscosity, red blood cell deformability, and aggregation), and inflammation (TNF-α) in room air (end-tidal oxygen partial pressure, ∼52 mmHg). Global cerebral blood flow (gCBF), ventilation, and pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) were measured in room air and again after 8-10 min of isocapnic hypoxia (end-tidal oxygen partial pressure, 40 mmHg). Pentoxifylline did not alter arterial blood gases, TNF-α, or hemorheology compared with placebo. Pentoxifylline did not affect gCBF or ventilation during room air or isocapnic hypoxia compared with placebo. However, in females, PASP was reduced with pentoxifylline during room air (placebo, 19 ± 3; pentoxifylline, 16 ± 3 mmHg;
= 0.021) and isocapnic hypoxia (placebo, 22 ± 5; pentoxifylline, 20 ± 4 mmHg;
= 0.029), but not in males. Acute pentoxifylline administration in lowlanders at 3,800 m had no impact on arterial blood gases, hemorheology, inflammation, gCBF, or ventilation. Unexpectedly, however, pentoxifylline reduced PASP in female participants, indicating a potential effect of sex on the pulmonary vascular responses to pentoxifylline.
We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled study on the rheological, cardiorespiratory and cerebrovascular effects of acute pentoxifylline in healthy lowlanders after 11-14 days at 3,800 m. Although red blood cell deformability was reduced and blood viscosity increased compared with low altitude, acute pentoxifylline administration had no impact on arterial blood gases, hemorheology, inflammation, cerebral blood flow, or ventilation. Pentoxifylline decreased pulmonary artery systolic pressure in female, but not male, participants.
