Abstract
The treatment of crowded fields in Gaia data will only be a reality in a few years from now. In particular, for globular clusters, only the end-of-mission data (public in 2022–2023) will ...have the necessary full crowding treatment and will reach sufficient quality for the faintest stars. As a consequence, the work on the deblending and decontamination pipelines is still ongoing. We describe the present status of the pipelines for different Gaia instruments, and we model the end-of-mission crowding errors on the basis of available information. We then apply the nominal post-launch Gaia performances, appropriately worsened by the estimated crowding errors, to a set of 18 simulated globular clusters with different concentration, distance and field contamination. We conclude that there will be 103–104 stars with astrometric performances virtually untouched by crowding (contaminated by <1 mmag) in the majority of clusters. The most limiting factor will be field crowding, not cluster crowding: the most contaminated clusters will only contain 10–100 clean stars. We also conclude that (i) the systemic proper motions and parallaxes will be determined to 1 per cent or better up to ≃15 kpc, and the nearby clusters will have radial velocities to a few km s−1; (ii) internal kinematics will be of unprecedented quality, cluster masses will be determined to ≃10 per cent up to 15 kpc and beyond, and it will be possible to identify differences of a few km s−1 or less in the kinematics (if any) of cluster sub-populations up to 10 kpc and beyond; (iii) the brightest stars (V ≃ 17 mag) will have space-quality, wide-field photometry (mmag errors), and all Gaia photometry will have 1–3 per cent errors on the absolute photometric calibration.
Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), the most common autoimmune thyroid disease at any age, is often associated with other autoimmune diseases. The present study was aimed to describe the type and frequency ...of non-thyroidal autoimmune diseases (NTADs) in HT patients and to delineate the clinical pattern of diseases clustering in pediatric/adolescent and adult age.
Cross-sectional study.
1053 newly diagnosed HT patients (500 adults (467 F, mean age 40.2 ± 13.7 years) and 553 children/adolescents (449 F, mean age 11.1 ± 3.0 years)) were evaluated for common NTADs by means of careful recording of medical history, physical examination and assessment of selected autoantibody profiles.
The prevalence of associated NTADs was significantly higher in adults than that in pediatric/adolescent HT patients (P < .0001). In addition, the number of adult patients suffering from two or more associated NTADs was significantly higher than that of children/adolescent (P < 0.0001). A female prevalence was evident in both cohorts, but was significant in the adults (P < 0.0001). The epidemiological distribution of NTADs was strongly different in the two cohorts, the most frequent associated diseases being arthropathies and connective tissue diseases in adults and type 1 diabetes and coeliac disease in children/adolescents. Skin diseases were represented with similar prevalence in both cohorts, vitiligo being the most common.
Age at HT presentation may influence autoimmune diseases clustering, favoring the association of specific NTADs in different ages of life. Moreover, the association between HT and NTADs increases with age and occurs most frequently in adults.
Most future surveys designed to discover transiting exoplanets, including TESS and PLATO, will target bright (V ... 13) and nearby solar-type stars having a spectral type later than F5. In order to ...enhance the probability of identifying transits, these surveys must cover a very large area on the sky, because of the intrinsically low areal density of bright targets. Unfortunately, no existing catalogue of stellar parameters is both deep and wide enough to provide a homogeneous input list. As the first Gaia data release exploitable for this purpose is expected to be released not earlier than late 2017, we have devised an improved reduced-proper-motion (RPM) method to discriminate late field dwarfs and giants by combining the fourth U.S. Naval Observatory CCD Astrograph Catalog (UCAC4) proper motions with AAVSO Photometric All-Sky Survey DR6 photometry, and relying on Radial Velocity Experiment DR4 as an external calibrator. The output, named UCAC4-RPM, is a publicly available, complete all-sky catalogue of solar-type dwarfs down to V ... 13.5, plus an extension to log g > 3.0 subgiants. The relatively low amount of contamination (defined as the fraction of false positives; <30 per cent) also makes UCAC4-RPM a useful tool for the past and ongoing ground-based transit surveys, which need to discard candidate signals originating from early-type or giant stars. As an application, we show how UCAC4-RPM may support the preparation of the TESS (that will map almost the entire sky) input catalogue and the input catalogue of PLATO, planned to survey more than half of the whole sky with exquisite photometric precision. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are novel anticancer agents, recently introduced with the aim of boosting the immune response against tumors. ICIs are monoclonal autoantibodies that specifically ...target inhibitory receptors on T cells: cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA4), programmed death 1 (PD-1) and its ligand (PD-1L). ICIs also generate peculiar dysimmune toxicities, called immune-related adverse events (irAEs), that can potentially affect any tissue, and some may be life-threatening if not promptly recognized. The endocrine and metabolic side effects of ICIs are reviewed here, with a particular focus on their clinical presentation and management. They are among the most frequent toxicities (around 10%) and include hypophysitis, thyroid disorders, adrenalitis, and diabetes mellitus. Treatment is based on the replacement of specific hormone deficits, accompanied by immunosuppression (with corticosteroids or other drugs), depending on irAEs grade, often without the need of ICI withdrawal, except in more severe forms. Prompt recognition of endocrine and metabolic irAEs and adequate treatment allow the patients to continue a therapy they are benefiting from. Endocrinologists, as an integral part of the multidisciplinary oncologic team, need to be familiar with the unique toxicity profile of these anticancer agents. Practical recommendations for their management are proposed.

We collected a large data set of field RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) by using catalogs already available in the literature and
Gaia
DR2. We estimated the iron abundances for a subsample of 2382 ...fundamental RRLs (Δ
S
method: Ca
ii
K, H
β
, H
γ
, and H
δ
lines) for which there are publicly available medium-resolution SDSS-SEGUE spectra. We also included similar estimates available in the literature, ending up with the largest and most homogeneous spectroscopic data set ever collected for RRLs (2903). The metallicity scale was validated by using iron abundances based on high-resolution spectra for a fundamental field RRL (V Ind), for which we collected X-shooter spectra covering the entire pulsation cycle. The peak (Fe/H = −1.59 ± 0.01) and the standard deviation (
σ
= 0.43 dex) of the metallicity distribution agree quite well with similar estimates available in the literature. The current measurements disclose a well-defined metal-rich tail approaching solar iron abundance. The spectroscopic sample plotted in the Bailey diagram (period versus luminosity amplitude) shows a steady variation when moving from the metal-poor (Fe/H = −3.0/–2.5) to the metal-rich (Fe/H = −0.5/0.0) regime. The smooth transition in the peak of the period distribution as a function of the metallicity strongly indicates that the long-standing problem of the Oosterhoff dichotomy among Galactic globular clusters is the consequence of the lack of metal-intermediate clusters hosting RRLs. We also found that the luminosity amplitude, in contrast with period, does not show a solid correlation with metallicity. This suggests that period–amplitude–metallicity relations should be cautiously treated.
Among major volatiles released from the Earth’s interior, CO2 is an important target for the international community. The interest is keenly motivated by the contribution of CO2 in the Earth’s carbon ...budget and its role on past, current, and future climate dynamics. In particular, the isotopic signature of CO2 is fundamental to characterize the source of this gas and its evolution up to the atmosphere. The recent development of new laser-based techniques has marked an important milestone for the scientific community by favoring both high-frequency and in situ stable isotope measurements. Among them, the Delta Ray IRIS (Thermo Scientific Inc., Waltham, USA) is one of the most promising instruments thanks to its high precision, its limited interferences with other gaseous species (such as H2S and/or SO2), and its internal calibration procedure. These characteristics and the relative easiness to transport the Delta Ray IRIS have encouraged its use on the field to analyze volcanic CO2 emissions in recent years but often with distinct customized protocols of measurements. In this study, various tests in the laboratory and on the field have been performed to study the dependence of CO2 isotope measurements on analytical, instrumental, and environmental conditions. We emphasize the exceptional ability of the Delta Ray IRIS to perform isotope measurements for a large range of CO2 concentration (200 ppm–100%) thanks to a dilution system and to get a reliable estimation of the real CO2 content from the diluted one. These tests lead to point out major recommendations on the use of Delta Ray IRIS and allow the development of adapted protocols to analyze CO2 emissions like in volcanic environments.
Little is known about the prevalence and clinical relevance of sensitization to shrimp allergens other than tropomyosin.
We detected the prevalence of arginine kinase and sarcoplasmic calcium binding ...protein sensitization, and identified a high molecular weight allergen that is frequently recognized by Italian shrimp-allergic patients.
Sera from 40 shrimp-allergic patients underwent the detection of IgE specific for arginine kinase (rPen m 2) and sarcoplasmic calcium-binding protein (rPen m 4) by ISAC 112 Microarray platform and immunoblot analysis. A high molecular weight shrimp allergen was identified by N-terminal amino acid sequencing.
IgE to rPen m 2 and rPen m 4 were found in 4/40 (10%) and 6/40 (15%) sera, respectively; two sera reacted to both allergens. Clinically, 6/8 Pen m 2 and/or Pen m 4 reactors experienced severe allergies to shrimp. On immunoblot, 4/6 rPen m 4-positive sera showed IgE reactivity at about 20 kDa, whereas no rPen m 2-positive serum reacted at about 40 kDa. Nineteen (47%) sera showed IgE reactivity at molecular weights > 60 kDa. Such profile was not associated with IgE reactivity to rPen m 2 or rPen m 4. N-terminal amino acid sequencing of the high molecular weight allergen led to the identification of hemocyanin.
Shrimp arginine kinase and sarcoplasmic calcium-binding protein are minor allergens sensitizing only 10%-15% of Italian shrimp-allergic patients, but are clinically relevant. Hemocyanin is a clinically relevant high molecular weight shrimp allergen possibly cross-reacting to house dust mite.
Raw earth is a traditional material used worldwide in vernacular architectures. For its wide availability, recyclability and low embodied energy in its life cycle, earth is acknowledged as one of the ...most environmentally sustainable material. Earth construction diffusion has been slowed by the lack of broadly accepted standards. Due to it, earth has been used as an artisanal material or adapted to existing technologies in combination with high embodied energy materials as steel, concrete and EPS or PU insulations (as in rammed earth technique, from now on RE). Aim of the research is to propose an innovative RE constructive technology, more coherent with the sustainable features of the base material, which can reach the high performances and the quality target required by the constructions sector using a low-tech prefabrication process. Prefabrication of RE elements can also reduce the construction times and the risks of technological faults, enhancing the quality of the entire building. The basic idea is to create manageable and transportable rammed earth panels with superior mechanical and thermal performances. The prefabrication under controlled conditions ensures a high-quality product which can be combined, on site, with a reinforcing timber structure with anti-seismic function. A characterization campaign on different local soils has been performed in order to implement the desired RE elements. The soils have been analysed with a set of geotechnical tests and qualitative assessments in order to detect their suitability for constructions. Once a suitable soil has been identified, a physical and / or chemical stabilization is needed to improve the physical features, mechanical characteristics and thermal properties of the natural soil. In the last section of the paper, the first results on natural local soil and engineered soil (an optimized mix of soil, sand and gravel) are presented and compared to identify a suitable material for the RE panel.
We present asymptotic giant branch (AGB) models of solar metallicity, to allow the interpretation of observations of Galactic AGB stars, whose distances should be soon available after the first ...release of the Gaia catalogue. We find an abrupt change in the AGB physical and chemical properties, occurring at the threshold mass to ignite hot bottom burning, i.e. 3.5 M⊙. Stars with mass below 3.5 M⊙ reach the C-star stage and eject into the interstellar medium gas enriched in carbon, nitrogen and 17O. The higher mass counterparts evolve at large luminosities, between 3 × 104 and 105 L⊙. The mass expelled from the massive AGB stars shows the imprinting of proton-capture nucleosynthesis, with considerable production of nitrogen and sodium and destruction of 12C and 18O. The comparison with the most recent results from other research groups is discussed, to evaluate the robustness of the present findings. Finally, we compare the models with recent observations of galactic AGB stars, outlining the possibility offered by Gaia to shed new light on the evolution properties of this class of objects.
Purpose
Cushing’s disease (CD), 70% of endogenous hypercortisolism cases, is a rare disease caused by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-secreting pituitary adenomas. To date, no systematic reviews ...and meta-analyses on its global epidemiology have been published. We provide a systematic review and meta-analysis of CD global epidemiology, also evaluating the quality of study reporting for the identified studies.
Methods
MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched for studies on CD epidemiology from inception until November 30th, 2020, including original observational studies in English about CD prevalence and/or incidence for well-defined geographic areas. Two reviewers independently extracted data and assessed reporting quality. CD prevalence/incidence pooled estimates were derived from a random-effects meta-analysis. Reporting quality was assessed using a STrengthening the Reporting of OBservational studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) checklist adapted for observational studies on rare diseases, heterogeneity using the Cochran’s
Q
-test and its derived measure of inconsistency (
I
2
).
Results
Thirteen studies were included. The pooled CD prevalence was 2.2 95% CI 1.1–4.8 per 100,000, while the incidence rate was 0.24 95% CI 0.15–0.33 per 100,000 person-years. For both parameters, considerable between-studies heterogeneity was found (
I
2
= 78.8% and 87.8%, respectively). The quality of study reporting was rated as medium for 11 (84.6%) studies and as low for 2 (15.4%).
Conclusion
Overall, our systematic meta-analysis demonstrated CD epidemiology to be similarly reported across different areas of the world, with some exceptions regarding regional differences or observation period intervals. Keeping into account the methodological differences between each paper, large-scale studies on CD epidemiology are warranted. Setting up national specific registries, based on standardized diagnostic and clinical parameters, with clearly defined selection and analysis criteria, and a strong cooperation between the scientific national societies for endocrinology is crucial to exclude other causes of variability (i.e. geographical differences due to other factors like (epi)genetic changes), and to support public health decision making.
