Brain age prediction based on children's brain MRI is an important biomarker for brain health and brain development analysis. In this paper, we consider the 3D brain MRI volume as a sequence of 2D ...images and propose a new framework using the recurrent neural network for brain age estimation. The proposed method is named as 2D-ResNet18+Long short-term memory (LSTM), which consists of four parts: 2D ResNet18 for feature extraction on 2D images, a pooling layer for feature reduction over the sequences, an LSTM layer, and a final regression layer. We apply the proposed method on a public multisite NIH-PD dataset and evaluate generalization on a second multisite dataset, which shows that the proposed 2D-ResNet18+LSTM method provides better results than traditional 3D based neural network for brain age estimation.
The phenomenon of acupuncture is both complex and dynamic. Recent information demonstrates that acupuncture may exert its actions on pain and immune processes. The coupling of these two systems ...occurs via common signaling molecules, i.e., opioid peptides. In this regard, we surmise that opioid activation leads to the processing of opioid peptides from their precursor, proenkephalin, and the simultaneous release of antibacterial peptides contained within the precursor as well. Thus, central nervous system pain circuits may be coupled to immune enhancement. Furthermore, acupuncture needle manipulation elicited signal increases bilaterally in the region of the primary and secondary somatosensory corticies in human brain as determined by magnetic resonance imaging. The maps reveal marked signal decreases bilaterally in multiple limbic and deep gray structures including the nucleus accumbens, amygdala, hypothalamus, hippocampus, and ventral tegmental area. Taken together, we surmise a major central nervous system pathway as well as local pain and immune modulation during acupuncture.
Abstract Connections of the cortical–thalamic–cerebellar–cortical regions provide a framework for studying the neural substrates of schizophrenia. A novel diffusion tensor tractography method was ...used to evaluate the differences in white matter connectivity between 12 patients with schizophrenia and 10 controls. For the tract tracing, we focused on the connection between the cerebellum and the thalamus. Fractional anisotropy (FA) measures along the fiber tracks were compared between patients and the control sample. Fiber tracts located between the cerebellar white matter and the thalamus exhibit a reduced FA in patients with schizophrenia in comparison with controls. The FA values along the defined fiber tracts were not overall reduced but exhibited a reduction in the anisotropy in the region in the superior cerebellar peduncles projecting towards the red nucleus.
The neural mechanisms underlying genetic risk for schizophrenia, a highly heritable psychiatric condition, are still under investigation. New schizophrenia risk genes discovered through genome-wide ...association studies (GWAS), such as neurogranin (NRGN), can be used to identify these mechanisms. In this study we examined the association of two common NRGN risk single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with functional and structural brain-based intermediate phenotypes for schizophrenia. We obtained structural, functional MRI and genotype data of 92 schizophrenia patients and 114 healthy volunteers from the multisite Mind Clinical Imaging Consortium study. Two schizophrenia-associated NRGN SNPs (rs12807809 and rs12541) were tested for association with working memory-elicited dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) activity and surface-wide cortical thickness. NRGN rs12541 risk allele homozygotes (TT) displayed increased working memory-related activity in several brain regions, including the left DLPFC, left insula, left somatosensory cortex and the cingulate cortex, when compared to non-risk allele carriers. NRGN rs12807809 non-risk allele (C) carriers showed reduced cortical gray matter thickness compared to risk allele homozygotes (TT) in an area comprising the right pericalcarine gyrus, the right cuneus, and the right lingual gyrus. Our study highlights the effects of schizophrenia risk variants in the NRGN gene on functional and structural brain-based intermediate phenotypes for schizophrenia. These results support recent GWAS findings and further implicate NRGN in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia by suggesting that genetic NRGN risk variants contribute to subtle changes in neural functioning and anatomy that can be quantified with neuroimaging methods.
