The main goal of the KLOE experiment is the study of CP violation in the K mesons system, with an accuracy of 10
−4 in the measurement of
Re(

. This task imposes strong constraints on the ...design and operation of the drift chamber, which must reconstruct the charged decays of low momentum K
L's and K
S's with high efficiency and high resolution. A full-length prototype of the chamber has been built and tested on a 50 GeV/
c beam. The analysis of the large sample of data has allowed a detailed study of the time to distance relations as a function of the track parameters and of the peculiar geometry of the drift cell. The detector performance, in terms of efficiency, spatial resolutions and
dE

resolution, is illustrated and discussed.

The efficiency of a mineral-oil-based scintillation detector, with 0.1% by weight of Gd within the walls of a modular substructure, was measured and calculated. From these measurements a detection ...efficiency of 28.6% can be deduced, for neutrons produced by a neutrino-proton reaction in the 56-t neutrino detector KARMEN, that neutrons from the inverse beta -decay reaction in KARMEN can be detected with high probability via the Gd(n, gamma ) reactions. A neutron efficiency of about 30% is thus possible, which means that high-efficiency neutrino detection is possible in KARMEN.< >

The Data Acquisition system for the KLOE experiment, presently running at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati DAΦNE collider, has been designed to sustain an acquisition throughput of
50
Mbyte/

...for an event rate of
10
kHz
. Its two major components are the front end data readout, based on custom buses, and a complex network of computers and storage devices hosting a set of distributed processes. The end result is a seamless data transport from the readout system to the storage library, accompanied by concurrent on line calibrations and data quality control.

The tracking detector of the KLOE experiment is 4
m diameter, 3.3
m length drift chamber, designed to contain a large fraction of the decays of low-energy K
L produced at the Frascati DAΦNE
...φ-factory. The chamber is made by a thin carbon fiber structure and operated with a helium-based gas mixture in order to minimise conversion of low-energy photons and multiple scattering inside the sensitive volume. The tracking information is provided by 58 layers of stereo wires defing 12,582 cells, 2×2
cm
2 in size in the 12 innermost layers and 3×3
cm

The main aim of the KLOE experiment at DAΦNE, the Frascati

system. Requirements on shower detection are very stringent. An hermetic, ...lead-scintillating fiber sampling calorimeter has been chosen and built. A review of the methods used to calibrate and reconstruct energy and timing is reported in this paper. Emphasis is given to the calibration procedures developed using the 2.4 pb

5.7%/

is achieved together with a linearity in energy response better than 1% above 50

is also measured on samples of radiative Bhabha and
Φ decays.

Very light materials have been chosen both for the drift medium, a helium-based gas mixture, and for the mechanical structure, made of carbon fiber, to minimize multiple scattering and conversion of low-energy photons. The design requirements, the adopted solutions together with the calibration procedure and the tracking performances of the drift chamber are discussed.

A double-level trigger system has been developed for the KLOE experiment. Custom electronics asserts a trigger in a 2
μs decision time. The decision is based on the combined information of the ...electromagnetic calorimeter and the drift chamber. The entire trigger system is continuously monitored, and data flowing from the trigger system have allowed both an efficient online monitoring of the detector and an online luminosity measurement.
