Expanding on information provided in a softcover report of the same title, this hardcover edition contains additional chapters and presents a more complete picture of the revolution in child survival ...that UNICEF now believes to be possible. Part I, the annual message from the executive director of UNICEF, summarizes worldwide reaction to breakthroughs in knowledge and technique that now make it possible to improve the health of millions of children. Throughout this part, 26 inset panels describe successful efforts to improve children's health. Part II brings together six essays by medical authorities. These essays outline both the potential for and problems in using oral rehydration therapy, growth monitoring, breastfeeding, expanded immunization, family spacing, and food supplements for pregnant and lactating women and infants who are being weaned. In Part III, three novelists from the developing world write about their visits to countries where changes are being made to improve health and living conditions. Part IV reports a special UNICEF study of the impact of the current world recession on the world's children. Part V presents, in tabular form, economic and social statistics on all the nations of the world, with particular reference being made to children's well-being. These tables include data on the pattern of child deaths and information for 130 nations on basic child welfare indicators, nutrition, health, education, demographic indicators, and economic indicators. In this paper, we fabricated an anisotropically etched multilevel silicon diffractive lens. The operating frequency and focal length of the lens are 2.52 THz and 15 mm, respectively. Both 4- and ...16-level lenses have been realized. The total etch depth and size of the lenses are 49 μm and 45 mm × 45 mm. Positive tone thick resist AZ 4562 was used as a mask material for dry etching the high resistivity silicon substrate. We have characterized the lens using a high power continuous wave far infrared laser operating at 2.52 THz. The measured results show good agreement with the designed specifications.
Abstract
Pollen grains dehydrate during their development and following their departure from the host stigma. Since the size and shape of a pollen grain can be dependent on environmental conditions, ...being able to predict both of these factors for hydrated pollen grains from their dehydrated state could be beneficial in the fields of climate science, agriculture, and palynology. Here, we use deep learning to transform images of dehydrated

pollen grains into images of hydrated

pollen grains. We also then use a deep learning neural network that was trained on experimental images of different genera of pollen grains to identify the hydrated pollen grains from the generated transformed images, to test the accuracy of the image generation neural network. This pilot work demonstrates the first steps needed towards creating a general deep learning-based rehydration model that could be useful in understanding and predicting pollen morphology.

technique, can be a highly effective tool for reducing or ...eliminating violent behavior in schools. After reviewing current approaches to preventing violence in schools, the authors review the factors contributing to the unique effectiveness of the Transcendental Meditation program. Central to this effectiveness is the program's ability to simultaneously deal with multiple causes of crime and violence. The paper reviews research demonstrating that practice of the technique reduces 23 identified risk factors for crime in four broad categories-physiological, psychological, and sociological circumstances and substance abuse. The paper concludes with a review of prior implementation of this program in educational and other settings as well as a discussion of the steps for implementation in new educational settings.

► A new and simple air-bridge fabrication technology. ► Simple resist selection gives fewer and simpler fabrication processes. ► No special e-beam dose or process calibration ...required. ► The process latitude of UVIII resist and polyamide is exploited. ► Excellent experimental demonstration for mm-wave application.
We describe a new air-bridge fabrication technology using electron beam lithography. This novel technique greatly simplifies the lithographic process, eliminating the requirement for complex writing control procedures used in established electron-beam lithography based processes. The new technique is demonstrated using single-dose per layer electron beam lithography and is applied to the fabrication of microwave and millimeter-wave waveguide structures.
Practical application of coherent beam combination of multiple fibres necessitates phase identification and optimisation in real-time. Here, we solve this mathematical challenge via deep learning, ...and hence demonstrate the potential for real-time bespoke beam shaping.
Classification of gene trees is an important task both in the analysis of multi-locus phylogenetic data, and assessment of the convergence of Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analyses used in Bayesian ...phylogenetic tree reconstruction. The logistic regression model is one of the most popular classification models in statistical learning, thanks to its computational speed and interpretability. However, it is not appropriate to directly apply the standard logistic regression model to a set of phylogenetic trees, as the space of phylogenetic trees is non-Euclidean and thus contradicts the standard assumptions on covariates. It is well-known in tropical geometry and phylogenetics that the space of phylogenetic trees is a tropical linear space in terms of the max-plus algebra. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an analogue approach of the logistic regression model in the setting of tropical geometry. Our proposed method outperforms classical logistic regression in terms of Area under the ROC Curve (AUC) in numerical examples, including with data generated by the multi-species coalescent model. Theoretical properties such as statistical consistency have been proved and generalization error rates have been derived. Finally, our classification algorithm is proposed as an MCMC convergence criterion for Mr Bayes. Unlike the convergence metric used by MrBayes which is only dependent on tree topologies, our method is sensitive to branch lengths and therefore provides a more robust metric for convergence. In a test case, it is illustrated that the tropical logistic regression can differentiate between two independently run MCMC chains, even when the standard metric cannot.
This study explored differences in recall accuracy following experimental manipulations of two elements specific to two common approaches to trauma treatment - inducing saccadic eye movements during ...imagery rehearsal (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing; EMDR) and imagery rehearsal without eye movements (Imaginal Exposure; IE). The study also looked into whether outcome was related to high suggestibility and distress characteristics. The sample consisted of 48 non-clinical adult participants. The results found no significant difference in false recalls between EMDR and IE. While the EMDR group did make more false recognitions, they also made more correct recalls than the IE group. In effect, those in the EMDR group appear to make more true recalls and more false recollections than those in the IE group.
Irrespective of treatment condition, fewer positive words were recalled and recognized than neutral and trauma words. As well as all subjects displaying no avoidant encoding style for trauma words overall, we also noted no avoidant encoding style as a function of trauma history or treatment condition. Our results argue against the avoidant encoding hypothesis for those with a history of trauma and also suggest a lowered response criterion following EMDR.
We prove a positive mass theorem for continuous Riemannian metrics in the Sobolev space \(W^{2, n/2}_{\mathrm{loc}}(M)\). We argue that this is the largest class of metrics with scalar curvature a ...positive a.c. measure for which the positive mass theorem may be proved by our methods.
