The PEANUT experiment was designed to study the NuMi neutrino beam at Fermilab. The detector uses a hybrid technique, being made of nuclear emulsions and scintillator trackers. Emulsion films act as ...a micrometric tracking device and are interleaved with lead plates used as passive material. The detector is designed to precisely reconstruct the topology of neutrino interactions and hence to measure the different contributions to the cross section. We present here the full reconstruction and analysis of 147 neutrino interactions and the measurement of the quasi-elastic, resonance and deep-inelastic contributions to the total charged current cross section at the energies of the NuMi neutrino beam. This technique could be applied for beam monitoring in future neutrino facilities, and this paper shows its proof-of-principle.

In this paper, the sensitivity of KM3NeT to a supernova explosion is estimated from detailed analyses of background data from the first KM3NeT detection units and simulations of the neutrino signal. The KM3NeT observational horizon (for a

discovery) covers essentially the Milky-Way and for the most optimistic model, extends to the Small Magellanic Cloud (
∼
60
kpc
). Detailed studies of the time profile of the neutrino signal allow assessment of the KM3NeT capability to determine the arrival time of the neutrino burst with a few milliseconds precision for sources up to 5–8 kpc away, and detecting the peculiar signature of the
standing accretion shock instability
if the core-collapse supernova explosion happens closer than 3–5 kpc, depending on the progenitor mass. KM3NeT’s capability to measure the neutrino flux spectral parameters is also presented.
KM3NeT is a research infrastructure located in the Mediterranean Sea, that will consist of two deep-sea Cherenkov neutrino detectors. With one detector (ARCA), the KM3NeT Collaboration aims at ...identifying and studying TeV–PeV astrophysical neutrino sources. With the other detector (ORCA), the neutrino mass ordering will be determined by studying GeV-scale atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The first KM3NeT detection units were deployed at the Italian and French sites between 2015 and 2017. In this paper, a description of the detector is presented, together with a summary of the procedures used to calibrate the detector in-situ. Finally, the measurement of the atmospheric muon flux between 2232–3386 m seawater depth is obtained.
The gSeaGen code is a GENIE-based application developed to efficiently generate high statistics samples of events, induced by neutrino interactions, detectable in a neutrino telescope. The gSeaGen ...code is able to generate events induced by all neutrino flavours, considering topological differences between track-type and shower-like events. Neutrino interactions are simulated taking into account the density and the composition of the media surrounding the detector. The main features of gSeaGen are presented together with some examples of its application within the KM3NeT project.

Nature of problem: Development of a code to generate detectable events in neutrino telescopes, using modern and maintained neutrino interaction simulation libraries which include the state-of-the-art physics models. The default application is the simulation of neutrino interactions within KM3NeT 4.
Solution method: Neutrino interactions are simulated using GENIE, a modern framework for Monte Carlo event generators. The GENIE framework, used by nearly all modern neutrino experiments, is considered as a reference code within the neutrino community.
Additional comments including restrictions and unusual features: The code was tested with GENIE version 2.12.10 and it is linkable with release series 3. Presently valid up to 5 TeV. This limitation is not intrinsic to the code but due to the present GENIE valid energy range.

The OPERA neutrino detector in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) has been designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode through the study of ...the νμ→ντ channel. The hybrid apparatus consists of an emulsion/lead target complemented by electronic detectors and it is placed in the high energy long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. Runs with CNGS neutrinos were successfully carried out in 2008 and 2009. After a brief description of the beam, the experimental setup and the procedures used for the analysis of the neutrino events, we describe the topology and kinematics of a first candidate ντ charged-current event satisfying the kinematical selection criteria. The background calculations and their cross-check are explained in detail and the significance of the event is assessed.
From 1994 to 1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wideband neutrino beam of the CERN SPS. In total about 100 000 charged-current neutrino interactions were located in ...the nuclear emulsion target and fully reconstructed. From this sample of events based on the data acquired by new automatic scanning systems, 2013 charm-decay events were selected by a pattern recognition program. They were confirmed as decays through visual inspection. Based on these events, the effective branching ratio of charmed particles into muons was determined to be B¯μ=7.3±0.8(stat)±0.2(syst)×10−2. In addition, the muonic branching ratios are presented for dominating charm-decay topologies. Normalization of the muonic decays to charged-current interactions provides σμ−μ+/σcc=3.16±0.34(stat)±0.09(syst)×10−3. Selecting only events with visible energy greater than 30 GeV gives a value of B¯μ that is less affected by the charm production threshold and quasi-elastic Λc+ production. Combining this value with the current average of B¯μ×|Vcd|2 at the leading order yields the value of |Vcd|LO=0.236±0.016.

The OPERA neutrino experiment at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory has measured the velocity of neutrinos from the CERN CNGS beam over a baseline of about 730 km. The measurement is ...based on data taken by OPERA in the years 2009, 2010 and 2011. Dedicated upgrades of the CNGS timing system and of the OPERA detector, as well as a high precision geodesy campaign for the measurement of the neutrino baseline, allowed reaching comparable systematic and statistical accuracies.
An arrival time of CNGS muon neutrinos with respect to the one computed assuming the speed of light in vacuum of
was measured corresponding to a relative difference of the muon neutrino velocity with respect to the speed of light
. The above result, obtained by comparing the time distributions of neutrino interactions and of protons hitting the CNGS target in 10.5
μ
s long extractions, was confirmed by a test performed at the end of 2011 using a short bunch beam allowing to measure the neutrino time of flight at the single interaction level.
A new series of 8-halogen-4,4a,5,6-tetrahydrothieno2,3-hcinnolinone-N2-alkanoic acids was prepared and tested for aldose reductase (ALR2) inhibitory activities. These compounds showed significant ...inhibitory activity against bovine lens ALR2, with the best compound 2e showing an IC(50) value of 31.4 microM. The presence of the C8-substituents here studied (Cl, Br) on the thienocinnolinone scaffold caused a decrease of the inhibitory potency by a factor of about 4 with respect to the unsubstituted parent compound, while the presence of a C8-methyl group, considered in a previous paper decreased the activity by a factor of about 2. Moreover, the length of the N2 alkanoic chain influences strongly the enzyme inhibitory activity. While most of the carboxylic acids ALR2 inhibitors are acetic acid derivatives, in the case of thienocinnolinone compounds, homologues higher than acetic acids showed to be more active.
The CHORUS experiment, designed to search for νμ→ντ oscillations, consists of a nuclear emulsion target and electronic detectors. In this paper, results on the production of charged particles in a ...small sample of charged-current neutrino– and anti-neutrino–nucleus interactions at high energy are presented. For each event, the emission angle and the ionization features of the charged particles produced in the interaction are recorded, while the standard kinematic variables are reconstructed using the electronic detectors. The average multiplicities for charged tracks, the pseudo-rapidity distributions, the dispersion in the multiplicity of charged particles and the KNO scaling are studied in different kinematical regions. A study of quasi-elastic topologies performed for the first time in nuclear emulsions is also reported. The results are presented in a form suitable for use in the validation of Monte Carlo generators of neutrino–nucleus interactions.
