We examine the literature on emotional labor and health care to demonstrate the potential for emotional labor research to inform how social and medical scientists think about health care and how ...examining healthcare contexts has contributed to the scientific understanding of emotional labor processes. In doing so, we first review the key terms and definitions that are used within the emotion management perspective and evaluate the ways in which power differences have remained largely implicit features of research on emotional labor in healthcare settings. Finally, we explore how the increasing economic rationalization of health care may be influencing the emotional experiences of today's healthcare professionals and the implications of this trend for future research on emotional labor and the health and well-being of care providers and their patients. What supports do children need? What lessons have been learned over the past decade to provide complementary services? For policymaker and practitioner perspectives on these questions, we turned to ...experts in the Ohio Department of Education: Dr. Wendy Grove, the director of the Office of Early Learning and School Readiness; and Jennifer Vargo, the former director of the Office of Whole Child Supports. To identify children’s needs, Ohio has developed processes to elevate and learn from families’ voices and lived experiences. Those insights have contributed to Ohio’s cross-agency collaborations to support whole-child approaches both through policymaking and integrated data systems. Collaborations also point toward areas of ongoing need, including more investment in early childhood supports and preschool. The conversation, led by Susan Moffitt, occurred on December 2, 2022, and has been edited for length.
Children who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) have improved language outcomes when enrolled in early intervention (EI) before the age of 6 months. Little is understood about the long-term impact of ...EI on outcomes of kindergarten readiness (K-readiness). The study objective was to evaluate the impact of EI before the age of 6 months (early) versus after 6 months (later) on K-readiness in children who are D/HH.
In this study, we leveraged data from the Ohio Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Data Linkage Project, which linked records of 1746 infants identified with permanent hearing loss born from 2008 to 2014 across 3 Ohio state agencies; 417 had kindergarten records. The Kindergarten Readiness Assessment was used to identify children as ready for kindergarten; 385 had Kindergarten Readiness Assessment scores available. Multiple logistic regression was used to investigate the relationship between K-readiness and early EI entry while controlling for confounders (eg, hearing loss severity and disability status).
Children who were D/HH and entered EI early (
= 222; 57.7% of the cohort) were more likely to demonstrate K-readiness compared with children who entered EI later (33.8% vs 20.9%;
= .005). Children who entered early had similar levels of K-readiness as all Ohio students (39.9%). After controlling for confounders, children who entered EI early were more likely to be ready for kindergarten compared with children who entered later (odds ratio: 2.02; 95% confidence interval 1.18-3.45).
These findings support the sustained effects of early EI services on early educational outcomes among children who are D/HH. EI entry before the age of 6 months may establish healthy trajectories of early childhood development, reducing the risk for later academic struggles.
Nurses are confronted with the reality of death and dying as part of their profession and, often times, their daily work. The qualitative data in this article were compiled from unsolicited comments ...provided by respondents to a survey of Registered Nurses. Forty-eight nurses wrote notes to the researcher/author which, after analysis, were organized into two major themes. The first theme encompassed how patient deaths are remembered. The length of time since the death, details provided, and definitions of “good death” were identified as sub-themes. The second theme surrounded the effect that patient death experiences have on nurses. Implications of these data include the need to acknowledge patient death and the immense emotional toll it takes on nurses, as well as understanding that nurses are disenfranchised grievers.
Literacy skill development in deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) children is essential for success in school and beyond. Our objective was to evaluate the association between age of early intervention ...(EI) enrollment for DHH children and emergent literacy in preschool.
This was a population-based study that leveraged state public health and education data on all children identified with hearing loss. The sample included children born between 2008 and 2014 enrolled in EI for hearing loss who received preschool supports (years 2011-2014) through the Ohio Department of Education. The Get it! Got it! Go!, measuring emergent literacy domains of picture naming, rhyming, and alliteration, was administered during preschool in fall and spring. Exposure was enrollment into EI before age 6 months (early) versus at/after 6 months (later). Propensity score matching and mixed model analyses were used to examine associations between EI enrollment and outcomes over time. Model least square means with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were reported.
One hundred two successful matches were made for 256 preschoolers. Children enrolled in EI early had significantly higher mean scores (mean 95% CI) over time for emerging literacy domains of picture naming (2.42 0.47-4.37), rhyming (1.2 0.35-2.06), and alliteration (0.61 0.15-1.07) compared with later enrolled children. Children enrolled early had significantly higher emergent literacy scores at entry, although literacy development was similar between groups.
Children enrolled in EI before age 6 months had consistently higher scores in emergent literacy components over time compared with children enrolled at/after age 6 months.
Knowledge of the emotional demands facing today’s nurses is critical for explaining how work stressors translate into burnout and turnover. Following a brief discussion of how the experience of ...burnout relates to the nursing shortage, we examine the scope of nurses’ emotional experiences and demonstrate that these experiences may be particularly consequential for understanding the higher levels of burnout reported by younger nurses. Using survey data collected from 843 direct care hospital nurses, we show that, compared to their older counterparts, nurses under 30 years of age were more likely to experience feelings of agitation and less likely to engage in techniques to manage these feelings. Younger nurses also reported significantly higher rates of burnout and this was particularly true among those experiencing higher levels of agitation at work. We conclude by suggesting the need for increased awareness of the emotional demands facing today’s nursing workforce as well as the need for more experienced nurses to serve as emotional mentors to those just entering the profession.

The jail population of women in the United States is growing at a greater rate than the population of men. Jails are short-term confinement facilities and many inmates will be released after a short ...period of time, only to be recycled again through the jail system. To reduce the level of recidivism for female inmates, interventions to address deficits in employability skills and attitudes should be a priority. This article examines the level of employability skills for a small sample (n = 52) of female jail inmates. Specifically, we examine basic "soft skills" in the three domains: basic skills (reading and math), interpersonal skills, and personal characteristics and attitudes. We find that female inmates have deficits in all three soft skills domains. Additionally, this sample had serious barriers to employment including a high level of substance abuse addiction, a lack of basic necessities, and emotional and physical illness. Recommendations are made for addressing these shortfalls with the goal of improving employability prospects for this population.
