In this Letter, we introduce a novel scheme for extrapolating the equation of state of QCD to finite chemical potential that features considerably improved convergence properties and allows us to ...extend its reach to unprecedentedly high baryonic chemical potentials. We present continuum extrapolated lattice results for the new expansion coefficients and show the thermodynamic observables up to μB/T≤3.5. This novel expansion does not suffer from the shortcomings that characterize the traditional Taylor expansion method, such as difficulties inherent in performing such an expansion with a limited number of coefficients and the poor signal-to-noise ratio that affects Taylor coefficients determined from lattice calculations.
The standard model of particle physics describes the vast majority of experiments and observations involving elementary particles. Any deviation from its predictions would be a sign of new, ...fundamental physics. One long-standing discrepancy concerns the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, a measure of the magnetic field surrounding that particle. Standard-model predictions
exhibit disagreement with measurements
that is tightly scattered around 3.7 standard deviations. Today, theoretical and measurement errors are comparable; however, ongoing and planned experiments aim to reduce the measurement error by a factor of four. Theoretically, the dominant source of error is the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization (LO-HVP) contribution. For the upcoming measurements, it is essential to evaluate the prediction for this contribution with independent methods and to reduce its uncertainties. The most precise, model-independent determinations so far rely on dispersive techniques, combined with measurements of the cross-section of electron-positron annihilation into hadrons
. To eliminate our reliance on these experiments, here we use ab initio quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and quantum electrodynamics simulations to compute the LO-HVP contribution. We reach sufficient precision to discriminate between the measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and the predictions of dispersive methods. Our result favours the experimentally measured value over those obtained using the dispersion relation. Moreover, the methods used and developed in this work will enable further increased precision as more powerful computers become available.
Like fluctuations, nondiagonal correlators of conserved charges provide a tool for the study of chemical freeze-out in heavy ion collisions. They can be calculated in thermal equilibrium using ...lattice simulations, and be connected to moments of event-by-event net-particle multiplicity distributions. We calculate them from continuum-extrapolated lattice simulations at μB=0, and present a finite-μB extrapolation, comparing two different methods. In order to relate the grand canonical observables to the experimentally available net-particle fluctuations and correlations, we perform a hadron resonance gas model analysis, which allows us to completely break down the contributions from different hadrons. We then construct suitable hadronic proxies for fluctuation ratios, and study their behavior at finite chemical potentials. We also study the effect of introducing acceptance cuts, and argue that the small dependence of certain ratios on the latter allows for a direct comparison with lattice QCD results, provided that the same cuts are applied to all hadronic species. Finally, we perform a comparison for the constructed quantities for experimentally available measurements from the STAR Collaboration. Thus, we estimate the chemical freeze-out temperature to 165 MeV using a strangeness-related proxy. This is a rather high temperature for the use of the hadron resonance gas; thus, further lattice studies are necessary to provide first principle results at intermediate μB.
We report measurements of ambient amines and ammonia with a fast response chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS) in a southeastern US forest and a moderately polluted midwestern site during the ...summer. At the forest site, mostly C3-amines (from pptv to tens of pptv) and ammonia (up to 2 ppbv) were detected, and they both showed temperature dependencies. Aerosol-phase amines measured thermal-desorption chemical ionization mass spectrometer (TDCIMS) showed a higher mass fraction in the evening with cooler temperatures and lower in the afternoon with warmer temperatures, a trend opposite to the gas-phase amines. Concentrations of aerosol-phase primary amines measured with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) from micron and submicron particles were 2 orders of magnitude higher than the gas-phase amines. These results indicate that gas to particle conversion is one of the major processes that control the ambient amine concentrations at this forest site. Temperature dependencies of C3-amines and ammonia also imply reversible processes of evaporation of these nitrogen-containing compounds from soil surfaces in daytime and deposition to soil surfaces at nighttime. During the transported biomass burning plume events, various amines (C1-C6) appeared at the pptv level, indicating that biomass burning is a substantial source of amines in the southeastern US. At the moderately polluted Kent site, there were higher concentrations of C1- to C6-amines (pptv to tens of pptv) and ammonia (up to 6 ppbv). C1- to C3-amines and ammonia were well correlated with the ambient temperature. C4- to C6-amines showed frequent spikes during the nighttime, suggesting that they were emitted from local sources. These abundant amines and ammonia may in part explain the frequent new particle formation events reported from Kent. Higher amine concentrations measured at the polluted site than at the rural forested site highlight the importance of constraining anthropogenic emission sources of amines.
The Observations and Modeling of the Green Ocean Amazon (GoAmazon2014/5) Experiment was carried out in the environs of Manaus, Brazil, in the central region of the Amazon basin for 2 years from ...1 January 2014 through 31 December 2015. The experiment focused on the complex interactions among vegetation, atmospheric chemistry, and aerosol production on the one hand and their connections to aerosols, clouds, and precipitation on the other. The objective was to understand and quantify these linked processes, first under natural conditions to obtain a baseline and second when altered by the effects of human activities. To this end, the pollution plume from the Manaus metropolis, superimposed on the background conditions of the central Amazon basin, served as a natural laboratory. The present paper, as the introduction to the special issue of GoAmazon2014/5, presents the context and motivation of the GoAmazon2014/5 Experiment. The nine research sites, including the characteristics and instrumentation of each site, are presented. The sites range from time point zero (T0) upwind of the pollution, to T1 in the midst of the pollution, to T2 just downwind of the pollution, to T3 furthest downwind of the pollution (70 km). In addition to the ground sites, a low-altitude G-159 Gulfstream I (G-1) observed the atmospheric boundary layer and low clouds, and a high-altitude Gulfstream G550 (HALO) operated in the free troposphere. During the 2-year experiment, two Intensive Operating Periods (IOP1 and IOP2) also took place that included additional specialized research instrumentation at the ground sites as well as flights of the two aircraft. GoAmazon2014/5 IOP1 was carried out from 1 February to 31 March 2014 in the wet season. GoAmazon2014/5 IOP2 was conducted from 15 August to 15 October 2014 in the dry season. The G-1 aircraft flew during both IOP1 and IOP2, and the HALO aircraft flew during IOP2. In the context of the Amazon basin, the two IOPs also correspond to the clean and biomass burning seasons, respectively. The Manaus plume is present year-round, and it is transported by prevailing northeasterly and easterly winds in the wet and dry seasons, respectively. This introduction also organizes information relevant to many papers in the special issue. Information is provided on the vehicle fleet, power plants, and industrial activities of Manaus. The mesoscale and synoptic meteorologies relevant to the two IOPs are presented. Regional and long-range transport of emissions during the two IOPs is discussed based on satellite observations across South America and Africa. Fire locations throughout the airshed are detailed. In conjunction with the context and motivation of GoAmazon2014/5 as presented in this introduction, research articles including thematic overview articles are anticipated in this special issue to describe the detailed results and findings of the GoAmazon2014/5 Experiment.

We conducted a phase 3, double-blind, randomized trial involving patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative early breast cancer with
or
germline pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants and high-risk clinicopathological factors who had received local treatment and neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy. Patients were randomly assigned (in a 1:1 ratio) to 1 year of oral olaparib or placebo. The primary end point was invasive disease-free survival.
A total of 1836 patients underwent randomization. At a prespecified event-driven interim analysis with a median follow-up of 2.5 years, the 3-year invasive disease-free survival was 85.9% in the olaparib group and 77.1% in the placebo group (difference, 8.8 percentage points; 95% confidence interval CI, 4.5 to 13.0; hazard ratio for invasive disease or death, 0.58; 99.5% CI, 0.41 to 0.82; P<0.001). The 3-year distant disease-free survival was 87.5% in the olaparib group and 80.4% in the placebo group (difference, 7.1 percentage points; 95% CI, 3.0 to 11.1; hazard ratio for distant disease or death, 0.57; 99.5% CI, 0.39 to 0.83; P<0.001). Olaparib was associated with fewer deaths than placebo (59 and 86, respectively) (hazard ratio, 0.68; 99% CI, 0.44 to 1.05; P = 0.02); however, the between-group difference was not significant at an interim-analysis boundary of a P value of less than 0.01. Safety data were consistent with known side effects of olaparib, with no excess serious adverse events or adverse events of special interest.
Among patients with high-risk, HER2-negative early breast cancer and germline
or
pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants, adjuvant olaparib after completion of local treatment and neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy was associated with significantly longer survival free of invasive or distant disease than was placebo. Ovulation to the first GnRH injection of Ovsynch-type protocols is lower in cows with high progesterone (P4) concentrations compared with cows with low P4 concentrations, suggesting that P4 may ...suppress the release of LH from the anterior pituitary after GnRH treatment. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of 1) circulating P4 concentrations at the time of GnRH treatment on GnRH-induced LH secretion in lactating dairy cows and 2) increasing the dose of GnRH from 100 to 200μg on LH secretion in a high- and low-P4 environment. A Double-Ovsynch (Pre-Ovsynch: GnRH, PGF2α 7d later, GnRH 3d later, and Breeding-Ovsynch 7d later: GnRH, PGF2α 7d later, and GnRH 48h later) synchronization protocol was used to create the high- and low-P4 environments. At the first GnRH injection of Breeding-Ovsynch (high P4), all cows with a corpus luteum ≥20mm were randomly assigned to receive 100 or 200μg of GnRH. At the second GnRH injection of Breeding-Ovsynch (low P4) cows were again randomized to receive 100 or 200μg of GnRH. Blood samples were collected every 15min from −15 to 180min after GnRH treatment, and then hourly until 6h after GnRH treatment. As expected, mean P4 concentrations were greater for cows in the high- than the low-P4 environment. For cows receiving 100μg of GnRH, the LH peak and area under the curve (AUC) were greater in the low- than in the high-P4 environment. Similarly, for cows receiving 200μg of GnRH, the LH peak and AUC were greater in the low- than the high-P4 environment. Cows receiving 100 or 200μg of GnRH had greater mean LH concentration in the low- than the high-P4 environment from 1 to 6h after GnRH treatment. On the other hand, when comparing the effect of the 2 GnRH doses in the high- and low-P4 environments, cows receiving 200μg of GnRH had a greater LH peak and AUC than cows treated with 100μg of GnRH both in the high- and low-P4 environments. For the high-P4 environment, mean LH was greater from 1.5 to 5h after GnRH treatment for cows receiving 200μg of GnRH than for those receiving 100μg of GnRH. In the low-P4 environment, mean LH was greater for cows receiving 200μg of GnRH than for those receiving 100μg of GnRH from 1 to 2.5h after GnRH treatment. We conclude that the P4 environment at GnRH treatment dramatically affects GnRH-induced LH secretion, and that a 200-μg dose of GnRH can increase LH secretion in either a high- or a low-P4 environment.
The objective was to determine if using a Double-Ovsynch protocol DO; Pre-Resynch: GnRH–7 d–PGF2α–3 d–GnRH, 7 d later Breeding-Resynch: GnRH–7 d–PGF2α–56 h–GnRH–16 h–timed artificial insemination ...(TAI) to resynchronize ovulation after a previous TAI would increase synchrony and pregnancies per AI (P/AI) compared with an Ovsynch protocol initiated 32 d after TAI (D32; GnRH–7 d–PGF2α–56 h–GnRH–16 h–TAI). Lactating Holstein cows at various days in milk and prior AI services were blocked by parity and randomly assigned to resynchronization treatments. All DO cows received the first GnRH injection of Pre-Resynch 22 d after TAI, and cows (n=981) diagnosed not pregnant using transrectal ultrasonography 29 d after TAI continued the protocol. Pregnancy status for all D32 cows was evaluated 29 d after TAI so fertility and pregnancy loss could be compared with that of DO cows. All D32 cows received the first GnRH injection of Ovsynch 32 d after TAI, and cows (n=956) diagnosed not pregnant using transrectal palpation 39 d after TAI continued the protocol. In a subgroup of cows from each treatment, ultrasonography (n=751) and serum progesterone (P4) concentrations (n=743) were used to determine the presence of a functional corpus luteum (CL) and ovulation to the first GnRH injection of D32 and Breeding-Resynch of DO (GnRH1), luteal regression after PGF before TAI, and ovulation to the GnRH injection before TAI (GnRH2). Overall, P/AI 29 d after TAI was not affected by parity and was greater for DO compared with D32 cows (39 vs. 30%). Pregnancy loss from 29 to 74 d after TAI was not affected by parity or treatment. The percentage of cows with a functional CL (P4 ≥1.0ng/mL) at GnRH1 was greater for DO than D32 cows (81 vs. 58%), with most DO cows having medium P4 (60%; 1.0 to 3.49ng/ml), whereas most D32 cows had either low (42%; <1.0ng/mL) or high (36%; ≥3.5ng/mL) P4 at GnRH1. Ovulation to GnRH1 was similar between treatments but was affected by serum P4 at GnRH. Cows with low P4 (<1.0ng/mL) had the greatest ovulatory response (59%), followed by cows with medium (≥1.0 to 3.49ng/mL; 38%) and then high (≥3.50ng/mL; 16%) P4 at GnRH1. A greater percentage of DO cows were synchronized compared with D32 cows (72 vs. 51%) primarily due to a greater percentage of D32 than DO cows without a functional CL at the PGF injection before TAI (35 vs. 17%) or without complete CL regression before GnRH2 (17 vs. 7%). We conclude that DO increased fertility of lactating dairy cows during a resynchronization program primarily by increasing synchronization of cows during the Ovsynch protocol before TAI.
The objective of this study was to compare circulating progesterone (P4) profiles and pregnancies per AI (P/AI) in lactating dairy cows bred by timed artificial insemination (TAI) following ...Ovsynch-56 after 2 different presynchronization protocols: Double-Ovsynch (DO) or Presynch-Ovsynch (PS). Our main hypothesis was that DO would increase fertility in primiparous cows, but not in multiparous cows. Within each herd (n=3), lactating dairy cows (n=1,687; 778 primiparous, 909 multiparous) were randomly assigned to DO n=837; GnRH-7d-PGF2α-3d-GnRH-7d-Ovsynch-56 (GnRH-7d-PGF2α-56h-GnRH-16hTAI) or PS (n=850; PGF2α-14d-PGF2α-12d-Ovsynch-56). In 1 herd, concentrations of P4 were determined at the first GnRH (GnRH1) of Ovsynch-56 and at d 11 after TAI (n=739). In all herds, pregnancy was diagnosed by palpation per rectum at 39 d. In 1 herd, the incidence of late embryo loss was determined at 74d, and data were available on P/AI at the subsequent second service. Presynchronization with DO reduced the percentage of animals with low P4 concentrations (<0.50ng/mL) at GnRH1 of Ovsynch-56 (5.4 vs. 25.3%, DO vs. PS). A lesser percentage of both primiparous and multiparous cows treated with DO had low P4 concentrations at GnRH1 of Ovsynch-56 (3.3 vs. 19.7%, DO vs. PS primiparous; and 8.8 vs. 31.9%, DO vs. PS multiparous). Presynchronization with DO improved P/AI at the first postpartum service (46.3 vs. 38.2%, DO vs. PS). Statistically, a fertility improvement could be detected for primiparous cows treated with DO (52.5 vs. 42.3%, DO vs. PS, primiparous), but only a tendency could be detected in multiparous cows (40.3 vs. 34.3%, DO vs. PS, multiparous), consistent with our original hypothesis. Presynchronization treatment had no effect on the incidence of late embryo loss after first service (8.5 vs. 5.5%, DO vs. PS). A lower body condition score increased the percentage of cows with low P4 at GnRH1 of Ovsynch-56 and reduced fertility to the TAI. In addition, P4 concentration at d 11 after TAI was reduced by DO. The method of presynchronization at first service had no effect on P/AI at the subsequent second service (34.7 vs. 36.5%, DO vs. PS). Thus, presynchronization with DO induced cyclicity in most anovular cows and improved fertility compared with PS, suggesting that DO could be a useful reproductive management protocol for synchronizing first service in commercial dairy herds.
Two experiments in two seasons evaluated fertilization rate and embryonic development in dairy cattle. Experiment 1 (summer) compared lactating Holstein cows (n = 27; 97.3±4.1 d postpartum dpp; ...40.0±1.5kg milk/d) to nulliparous heifers (n = 28; 11 to 17 mo old). Experiment 2 (winter) compared lactating cows (n = 27; 46.4±1.6 dpp; 45.9±1.4kg milk/d) to dry cows (n = 26). Inseminations based on estrus included combined semen from four high-fertility bulls. Embryos and oocytes recovered 5 d after ovulation were evaluated for fertilization, embryo quality (1 = excellent to 5 = degenerate), nuclei/embryo, and accessory sperm. In experiment 1, 21 embryos and 17 unfertilized oocytes (UFO) were recovered from lactating cows versus 32 embryos and no UFO from heifers (55% vs. 100% fertilization). Embryos from lactating cows had inferior quality scores (3.8±0.4 vs. 2.2±0.3), fewer nuclei/embryo (19.3±3.7 vs. 36.8±3.0) but more accessory sperm (37.3±5.8 vs. 22.4±5.5/embryo) than embryos from heifers. Sperm were attached to 80% of UFO (17.8±12.1 sperm/UFO). In experiment 2, lactating cows yielded 36 embryos and 5 UFO versus 34 embryos and 4 UFO from dry cows (87.8 vs. 89.5% fertilization). Embryo quality from lactating cows was inferior to dry cows (3.1±0.3 vs. 2.2±0.3), but embryos had similar numbers of nuclei (27.2±2.7 vs. 30.6±2.1) and accessory sperm (42.0±9.4 vs. 36.5±6.3). From 53% of the flushings from lactating cows and 28% from dry cows, only nonviable embryos were collected. Thus, embryos of lactating dairy cows were detectably inferior to embryos from nonlactating females as early as 5 d after ovulation, with a surprisingly high percentage of nonviable embryos. In addition, fertilization rate was reduced only in summer, apparently due to an effect of heat stress on the oocyte.
