By pitting the states ...of Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Montenegro against a diminished Ottoman Empire-and subsequently against one another-they anticipated many of the horrors of twentieth-century warfare even as they produced the tense regional politics that helped spark World War I. Bringing together an international group of scholars, this volume applies the social and cultural insights of the "new military history" to revisit this critical episode with a central focus on the experiences of both combatants and civilians during wartime.
Antimicrobial use in livestock production is a driver for the development and proliferation of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Wildlife interactions with livestock, acquiring associated AMR bacteria ...and genes, and wildlife's subsequent dispersal across the landscape are hypothesized to play an important role in the ecology of AMR. Here, we examined priority AMR phenotypes and genotypes of Escherichia coli isolated from the gastrointestinal tracts of European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) found on concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). European starlings may be present in high numbers on CAFOs (>100,000 birds), interact with urban environments, and can migrate distances exceeding 1,500 km in North America. In this study, 1,477 European starlings from 31 feedlots in five U.S. states were sampled for E. coli resistant to third generation cephalosporins (3G-C) and fluoroquinolones. The prevalence of 3G-C and fluoroquinolone-resistant E. coli was 4% and 10%, respectively. Multidrug resistance in the E. coli isolates collected (n = 236) was common, with the majority of isolates displaying resistance to six or more classes of antibiotics. Genetic analyses of a subset of these isolates identified 94 genes putatively contributing to AMR, including seven class A and C β-lactamases as well as mutations in gyrA and parC recognized to confer resistance to quinolones. Phylogenetic and subtyping assessments showed that highly similar isolates (≥99.4% shared core genome, ≥99.6% shared coding sequence) with priority AMR were found in birds on feedlots separated by distances exceeding 150 km, suggesting that European starlings could be involved in the interstate dissemination of priority AMR bacteria.

Accurate species-level identification of the source of arthropod bloodmeals is important for deciphering blood feeding patterns of field-collected specimens. Cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) ...mitochondrial gene sequencing has been used for this purpose; however, species resolution can be difficult to obtain from certain vertebrate genera, including Odocoileus. Sanger sequencing of mitochondrial genes was employed to identify the bloodmeal source of wild-caught mosquitoes trapped in Greeley, Colorado. Initial sequencing of the COI gene of mitochondrial DNA in bloodmeals was inadequate for species-level resolution of bloodmeals from deer in the genus Odocoileus, with current databases returning low fidelity matches to multiple genera. The use of the hypervariable D loop of the control region provided species-level identification of white-tailed deer (Order: Artiodactyla, Family: Cervidae, Odocoileus virginianus); however, taxonomic identification was successful only to genus for mule (O. hemionus hemionus) and black-tailed deer (O. hemionus columbianus). We advocate the use of multiple loci for bloodmeal analysis and the buildout of available databases to include multiple mitochondrial reference genes for reliable host species identification.
Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are characterised by a neutrophilic mucosal infiltration. The purpose of this study was to investigate the time course of release of the ...cytokines/chemokines interleukins (IL) IL-1beta, IL-1ra, tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), IL-6, IL-8, interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP-1), soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), myeloperoxidase (MPO) and bradykinin in nasal secretions of patients with a naturally acquired URTI. A total of 117 healthy adult volunteers were recruited for baseline nasal lavages, 39 of whom developed URTI symptoms within 6 months and returned to our centre within 48 h. Lavages were performed daily during the symptomatic period and 3 weeks thereafter, with symptoms no longer present. Compared to baseline, significantly elevated concentrations of total protein, bradykinin, IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1, IFN-gamma, MPO and sICAM-1 were detected in nasal lavage fluids of symptomatic patients, whereas IL-1ra remained unaltered. All studied variables reached baseline 3 weeks after the URTI. Naturally acquired URTI represent a limited, neutrophilic inflammatory reaction, orchestrated by the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines.
We analysed the effects of complement depletion and of C5a inhibition on haemodynamic parameters, oxygen delivery (DO2), oxygen consumption (VO2), oxygen extraction ratio (OER) and blood lactate ...levels after live bacteria infusion in pigs.
In the first series of experiments, animals were decomplemented by cobra venom factor (CVF, 125 micrograms kg-1) and challenged with 1.3 x 10(9) Escherichia coli kg-1. In a second series, animals were treated with neutralizing anti-C5a monoclonal antibodies (mAb) T13/9 before infusion of an increased E. coli dosage (1 x 10(10) E. coli kg-1). Administration of Gram-negative bacteria resulted in hypotension, tachycardia, pulmonary hypertension and decreased cardiac output typical for severe sepsis. These alterations were more pronounced in animals challenged with a higher bacteria concentration (1 x 10(10) E. coli kg-1, n = 5) than with a lower dosage (1.3 x 10(9) E. coli kg-1, n = 4). Complement depletion by CVF injection 24 h before E. coli infusion (n = 4), or anti-C5a mAb T13/9 administration (n = 4) had no effect on the changes in haemodynamic parameters and in DO2 associated with E. coli challenge. Application of either 1.3 x 10(9) or 1 x 10(10) E. coli kg-1 resulted in a marked decrease in VO2 and an increase in blood lactate levels, whereas the OER did not change throughout the experiment. In contrast, pretreatment with CVF 24 h before low-dose E. coli (1.3 x 10(9) kg-1) administration resulted in a significant increase in VO2 (P < 0.05) and in OER (P < 0.05) compared with untreated septic animals (n = 4). No hyperlactaemia occurred in complement-depleted septic animals compared with complement-sufficient animals (P < 0.05). Animals challenged with a high E. coli dose (1 x 10(1) kg-1) and treated with anti-C5a mAbs showed a pronounced increase in VO2 and OER (P < 0.05) accompanied by an attenuated increase in lactate levels (P < 0.05) compared with untreated septic animals.
The results demonstrate an improved oxygen use after complement depletion in this model of severe Gram-negative sepsis. Furthermore, a similar effect was seen after specifically neutralizing C5a by mAbs, indicating a role of C5a in the underlying mechanism.
The analysis of genomic DNA fragment patterns has revealed as a powerful tool for strain discrimination in Staphylococcus aureus; for use as an epidemiological marker, stability during the course of ...an outbreak is an essential prerequisite. Genomic DNA fragment patterns (SmaI restriction, pulsed-field electrophoresis) of four different epidemic MRSA strains were compared along with intra- and interhospital and country-wide spread over more than 12 months in Germany. Strain I was isolated from infections in 8 hospitals. In one hospital a subclone arised which differed from the original strain by 4 fragments. Strain II was spread among 4 hospitals, isolates from three of these hospitals exhibited a variability of one to three fragments in the 150-200 kb range. Two hospitals in the Hannover-area were affected by strain III; in 17 isolates of this strain a variability up to three fragments was found in the 170-200 kb range. Strain IV was isolated from 19 cases of infections in 3 hospitals in Berlin. The fragment patterns were completely stable. When S. aureus strains are typed by genomic DNA fragment patterns, a variability in a definite range of molecular masses during the course of an epidemic should be taken into consideration.
