Li

MoO
4
and
TeO
2
crystals) capable of discriminating surface
α
and
β
interactions by exploiting superconducting properties of Al film deposited on the detector surface. We report in this paper the results of tests on prototypes performed at CSNSM (Orsay, France) that showed the capability of a-few-
μ
m
-thick superconducting Al film deposited on crystal surface to discriminate surface
α
from bulk events, thus providing the detector with the required pulse shape discrimination capability. The CROSS technology would further improve the background suppression and simplify the detector construction (no auxiliary light detector is needed to reject alpha surface events) with a view to future competitive double-beta decay searches.
Modern industrial development of governments is largely determined by the condition of the power industry. Nowadays, the energy policy of governments is focused on the improvement of highly efficient ...combined heat and power (CHP) plants, to conserve fossil fuels and achieve higher output power. The application of gas turbines and heat recovery systems is considered a promising method of increasing the overall efficiency of the power plant. In this article, a microturbine was considered as the prime mover in a CHP plant, while the exhaust gases were used to power a Stirling engine, and consequently generating additional power and heat, increasing the overall efficiency of the power plant. Also, the advantages and disadvantages of the Stirling engine were briefly discussed. Moreover, two general configuration schemes and a calculation method of the CHP plant have been developed. Finally, the results of utilizing the exhaust gases of a microturbine and a Stirling engine were presented.

Thymoquinone (TQ) is the bioactive constituent of the volatile oil of Nigella sativa L. and has been shown to exert antioxidant antineoplastic and anti-inflammatory effects. During the study of its ...possible mechanism of action, we found that TQ reacts chemically (i.e. nonenzymatically) with glutathione (GSH), NADH and NADPH. A combination of liquid chromatography/UV-Vis spectrophotometry/Mass spectrometry analyses was used to identify the products of these reactions. The reaction that occur in physiological conditions indicates the formation of only two products, glutathionyl-dihydrothymoquinone after rapid reaction with GSH, and dihydrothymoquinone (DHTQ) after slow reaction time with NADH and NADPH. Measurement of the antioxidant activity of reduced compounds against organic radicals such as 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)(ABTS) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) also revealed a potential scavenging activity for glutathionyl-dihydrothymoquinone similar to that of DHTQ. Under our experimental conditions, TQ shows lower scavenging activities than glutathionyl-dihydrothymoquinone and DHTQ; it is very interesting to observe that the reduced compounds apparently show an antioxidant capacity equivalent to Trolox. The results indicate a possible intracellular nonenzymatic metabolic activation of TQ dependent on GSH, NADH or NADPH that may represent a "cellular switch" able to modulate cellular antioxidant defences.
Thymoquinone (TQ) is the main constituent of

in vivo antineoplastic growth inhibition against various tumor cell lines. Because of the ...increasing interest to test it in pre-clinical and clinical researches for assessing its health benefits, we here evaluate the interactions between TQ and human serum albumin (HSA), a possible carrier of this drug
in vivo. Binding to HSA was studied using different spectroscopic techniques. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopies suggest that the association between TQ and HSA does not affect the secondary structure of HSA. Using fluorescence spectroscopy, one mole of TQ was found to bind one mole of HSA with a binding constant of 2.39 ± 0.2 10
4
M
−1. At 25
°C (pH 7.4), van’t Hoff’s enthalpy and entropy that accompany the binding were found to be −10.24
kJ/mol
−1 and 45
J/mol
−1K
−1 respectively. The thermodynamic analysis of the TQ-HSA complex formation shows that the binding process is enthalpy driven and spontaneous, and that hydrophobic interactions are the predominant intermolecular forces stabilizing the complex. Furthermore, displacement experiments using warfarin and ibuprofen indicate that TQ could bind to site I of HSA, which is also in agreement with the results of the molecular modeling study.
Perforation of maxillary sinus mucous membrane is one of the most prevalent complications during open sinus lift surgery. Moreover, such complication can usually be managed by an absorbable membrane. ...As far as absorbable membranes are concerned, decellularized maxillary sinus mucous membrane, which is an extracellular matrix, can be used as a biologic scaffold and an insulating membrane in sinus lifting surgery.
The decellularization process of the maxillary sinus membrane was performed by means of physical and chemical procedures (liquid nitrogen and sodium dodecyl sulfate). Then this membrane was used as a bioscaffold for culturing with adult mesenchymal stem cells, which were derived from adipose tissue.
Histologic evaluation of the decellularized scaffold revealed that cells of the Schneiderian membrane were compatibly removed via SDS 1%. Moreover, the scan with electron microscope (S6N – Leo vp1450, Germany) of the scaffold indicated that the collagen fibers of the decellularized maxillary sinus membrane were intact. Furthermore, the culture studies carried out showed that this scaffold supported cell seeding.
The decellularized human maxillary Schneiderian membrane has a 3D structure similar to that of the extracellular matrix of human normal tissues. As a matter of fact, it can be used as a bioscaffold to support cell seeding.

2) under physiological conditions. The reaction is mediated by the intermediate quinone forms of TQ, that is, glutathionyl-dihydrothymoquinone (DHTQ-GS) and dihydrothymoquinone (DHTQ), formed from direct interaction of TQ with GSH or NADH (NADPH). In vitro incubation of oxidized human erythrocytes with TQ, DHTQ, and the GSH/TQ mixture reduces the intracellular met-Hb at different rates. In the present study, we report that TQ and its reduced derivatives can also prevent lipid peroxidation induced by the MbFe
III/H
2O
2 system. In this system, lipid peroxidation is induced by Mb
IV or a putative Mb
IV/·Mb
VI composite; it is plausible that the antioxidant function of TQ derivatives is related to their ability to reduce these oxidizing species. This is of particular biological significance, as natural quinones may participate in reducing processes that lead to recovery of hemoglobin and myoglobin during oxidative stress.

particles at a level much higher than 99.9% – with equally high acceptance for

Routing is a fundamental issue to consider when dealing with multihop cognitive radio networks. We investigate in this work, the potential routing approaches that can be employed in such adaptive ...wireless networks. We argue that in multihop cognitive radio environments no general routing solution can be proposed, but cognitive environments can be classified into three separate categories, each requiring specific routing solutions. Basically, this classification is imposed by the activity of the users on the licensed bands that cognitive radios try to access. First, over a relatively static primary band, where primary nodes idleness largely exceeds cognitive users communication durations, static mesh routing solutions can be reused, whereas second, over dynamically available spectrum bands new specific routing solutions have to be proposed, we give some guidelines and insights about designing such solutions. Third, if cognitive radios try to access over highly active and rarely available primary bands, opportunistic forwarding without preestablished routing is to be explored.
