Described are the research techniques utilized & obstacles encountered in late 1975, when interviewing several hundred members of the Australian national elite about the national power structure. The ...relative accessibility of different elite groups is described, along with a combination of techniques for obtaining personal interviews with them. Instruments for investigating the structure of elite interaction are summarized & evaluated. A close overlap between those who hold top positions & those who have reputations for national influence is found, & this is said to cast doubt on the relevance of the debate about positional & reputational methods for identifying national elites. Addressed is the extent of integration among national elites in the United States & Australia. This much-disputed issue is investigated through study of the structure & social bases of elite ...interaction networks; data come from comparable surveys of 545 United States & 370 Australian leaders in economic, political, & social institutions, conducted in 1971/72 by the Bureau of Applied Social Research, Columbia University, & by the Australian National University in 1975. Described are personal networks used by leaders to influence policy & PO on specific national issues. In each country, tightly integrated social circles are shown to exist, along with numerous smaller, more specialized cliques. The LBNL Superconducting Magnet Program is extending accelerator magnet technology to the highest possible fields. A 1 meter long, racetrack dipole magnet, utilizing state-of-the-art Nb/sub 3/Sn ...superconductor, has been built and tested. A record dipole filed of 14.7 Tesla has been achieved. Relevant features of the final assembly and test results are discussed.
The life history and distribution of the mysid Archaeomysis grebnitzkii is being studied on the beach and in the near shore region of the mid-Oregon coast. Mysids are being collected from the sandy ...intertidal region with cores and sweep nets, and with a beam trawl offshore to a depth of 200 ft. The offshore samples are used to establish the zone inhabited by Archaeomysis grebnitzkii . The life history parameters measured include length frequency, sex ratio and brood size. Preliminary data show a concentration of juvenile A. grebnitzkii on the beach while the larger individuals are found more commonly offshore.
A Nb/sub 3/Sn dipole magnet (D20) has been designed, constructed, and tested at LBNL. Previously, we had reported test results from a hybrid design dipole which contained a similar inner Nb/sub 3/Sn ...and outer NbTi winding. This paper presents the final assembly characteristics and parameters which will be compared with those of the original magnet design. The actual winding size was determined and a secondary calibration of the assembly pre-load was done by pressure sensitive film. The actual azimuthal and radial D20 pre-loading was accomplished by a very controllable novel stretched wire technique. D20 reached 12.8 T (4.4 K) and 13.5 T (1.8 K) the highest dipole magnetic fields obtained to date in the world.
The early design and test results have been previously reported. During the subsequent operation of "D20" the accelerator prototype dipole has provided both additional and more detailed data as to ...its characteristics and performance. D20's use as a test facility for high field critical current measurements has provided operational experience and history pertaining to accelerator required characteristics. There has been recently obtained data related to field quality, operational reproducibility and reliability, which will be presented. This prototype "D20" has attained the highest magnetic field of any accelerator prototype dipole constructed and tested to date. The magnet has continued to operate routinely.
