In this research, we have fabricated the complex microstructure features along with the high density of twin boundaries using the combination of magnetic pulse compaction (MPC) and spark plasma ...sintering (SPS), which are exclusively improved the thermoelectric transport properties of p-type Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 alloys via effective scattering of carriers and phonons at the grain boundary interfaces. The texture analysis confirmed the formation of bimodal (mixed grains) microstructural features in MPC + SPS specimens sintered at 350 °C, and 400 °C respectively due to the adhesion of fine grains (grain growth) and initiation of recrystallization at high temperatures. In addition to high density of twin structure, high-angle grain boundaries have also been identified. The power factor of 3.53 mW/m.K2 was obtained for the MPC + SPS at 400 °C due to increased Seebeck coefficient and larger electrical conductivity values. The maximum reduced thermal conductivity of 1.14W/mK was recorded due to a significant reduction in lattice thermal conductivity, which is mainly owing to strong scattering of phonons at the formation of mixed grain microstructures with high-density dislocations. As a result, maximum figure of merit, ZT = 1.17was achieved for MPC + SPS at 400 °C temperature.
•Developed bimodal microstructure with high density of twin boundaries in BST alloys.•Seebeck coefficient & electrical conductivity increased at high sintering temperature.•Phonons are more scattered at mixed microstructures & high density twin boundaries.•Peak ZT = 1.17 was achieved for MPC + SPS-400 °C specimen due to high α and low κ.
In this study, high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) device was used as an immuno biosensor to measure concentration of a stress hormone, cortisol, by using selective binding on cortisol ...monoclonal antibody (c-Mab). Also, the HEMT sensor was enhanced in its sensitivity through light illumination to generate photocurrent. The optical pumping could assist the biosensor to discriminate more detailed change, which could result in an increment of limit of detection (LOD) to 1.0 pM cortisol level. It was the lowest level of detection with semiconductor device-based cortisol biosensors and the enhancement of surface potential sensitivity was induced by laser light (532 nm). Output current amplificated by photocurrent was higher than dark original current at about 3.39% when gate voltage is applied with −3 V. Since the device could be applied to not only standard cortisol solution but also real human salivary sample, it is expected to apply for in vitro direct diagnosis of point-of-care test (POCT).
•High electron mobility transistor (HEMT) sensor was demonstrated for a direct cortisol measurement using c-Mab immune-detection.•The HEMT sensor could measure 1.0 pM levels of cortisol standard solution and in human salivary sample.•Detection efficiency of cortisol was enhanced by optical pumping of AlGaN/GaN layer through laser illumination.
Metabolic syndrome (MS), characterized by the presence of risk factors for various metabolic disorders, including impaired glucose tolerance, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and insulin resistance, has a ...high incidence in the Asian population. Among the various approaches used for improving MS, the combination of exercise and nutrition is of increasing importance. In this randomized controlled trial, we evaluated the effects of combined aqua exercise and burdock extract intake on blood pressure, insulin resistance, arterial stiffness, and vascular regulation factors in older women with MS. A total of 42 participants were randomly assigned into one of four groups (control, exercise, burdock, and exercise + burdock) and underwent a 16-week double-blinded intervention. Blood pressure, insulin resistance, arterial stiffness, and vascular regulation factors were evaluated before and after the intervention. The 16-week intervention of aqua exercise decreased the levels of insulin, glucose, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, and thromboxane A2, but increased the levels of the quantitative insulin sensitivity check index and prostaglandin I2. The combined burdock extract intake and aqua exercise intervention had an additional effect, improving the augmentation index, augmentation index at 75 beats per min, and pulse wave velocity. In conclusion, aqua exercise could improve insulin resistance and vascular regulation factors in older women with MS. Furthermore, combined treatment with burdock extract intake could improve arterial stiffness via a synergistic effect.
Hybrid supercapacitors show high energy densities with good long-term cycling stability when used as energy sources. However, their poor rate performance as a consequence of their low ionic diffusion ...capability at high currents during cycling should be improved. Here, we propose using a spray-drying process to fabricate a novel structure comprising open-porous spherical lithium manganese oxide as an electrode material for hybrid supercapacitors. The resultant hybrid supercapacitor comprising full-cell systems shows a high specific capacitance (33.8 F cm−3 at a current of 1 A) and remarkable high-rate performance (25.6 F cm−3 at a current of 16 A). Moreover, outstanding cycling stability of 83% was attained at a current of 2 A after 5400 cycles. Our new strategy provides a useful methodology to increase the abundance of electrochemically active sites by fabricating a spherical structure using nanosized primary particles, which also leads to shorter diffusion pathways and to improved ionic electron transport because of the open-porous structure of the electrode materials.

Purpose The standard gamble (SG) method is the gold standard for valuing health states as a utility, although it is accepted that it is difficult to valuate health states. This study was conducted in ...order to compare the SG with the rating scale (RS) and time trade-off (TTO) techniques in terms of their feasibility, comparability, and reliability in a valuation survey of the general Korean population. Methods Five-hundred members of the general Korean population were recruited using a multi-stage quota sampling method in Seoul and its surrounding areas, Korea. Respondents evaluated 9 EQ-5D-5L health states using a visual analogue scale (VAS), SG, and TTO during a personal interview. Feasibility was assessed in aspects of the level of difficulty, administration time, and inconsistent responses. Comparability was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the Bland-Altman approach. Test-retest reliability was analyzed using the ICC. Results Of the three methods, VAS was the easiest and quickest method to respond. The SG method did not differ significantly compared to the TTO method in administration time as well as the level of difficulty. The SG and TTO values were highly correlated (r = 0.992), and the average mean difference between the SG and the TTO values was 0.034. The ICCs of the VAS, SG, and TTO scores were 0.906, 0.841, and 0.827, respectively. Conclusions This study suggests that the SG method compared with the VAS and TTO method was feasible and offered a reliable tool for population-based, health state valuation studies in Korea.
The vasomotor axon reflex can be evoked in peripheral epidermal nociceptive C-fibers to induce local vasodilation. This neurogenic flare response is a measure of C-fiber functional integrity and ...therefore shows impairment in patients with small fiber neuropathy. Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) and laser Doppler imaging (LDI) are both techniques to analyze vasomotor small fiber function by quantifying the integrity of the vasomotor-mediated axon reflex. While LDF assesses the flare response following acetylcholine iontophoresis with temporal resolution at a single defined skin point, LDI records flare responses with spatial and temporal resolution, generating a two-dimensional map of superficial blood flow. LDF is characterized by a high intra- and interindividual measurement variability, which is smaller in LDI due to its spatial resolution. Nevertheless, LDI still lacks standardized methods for image analysis. Consequently, use of the technique currently remains on an experimental level. Here, we sought to review the current literature on laser Doppler assessment of vasomotor function and discuss potential future applications of established techniques as well as those that are still experimental.
Background: Recent research underscores the clinical relevance of muscle conditions such as sarcopenia and their links to bone mineral density (BMD), yet notable gaps persist in the understanding of ...their interconnections. Our study addresses this by introducing a novel approach to decipher the correlation between BMD and the texture of the multifidus muscle, utilizing spinal computed tomography (CT) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to evaluate muscle texture, BMD, and bone mineral content (BMC) at the total lumbar vertebra and total hip. Methods: Our single-institution study examined 395 cases collected from 6 May 2012 to 30 November 2021. Each patient underwent a spinal CT scan and a DXA scan within a one-month interval. BMD and BMC at the total lumbar vertebra and total hip were measured. The texture features of the multifidus muscle from the axial cuts of T12 to S1 vertebrae were assessed via gray-level co-occurrence matrices. CT texture analysis values at angles of 45 + 45 and 90 degrees were calculated and correlated with BMD and BMC. A regression model was then constructed to predict BMD values, and the precision of these correlations was evaluated using mean square error (MSE) analysis. Results: Total lumbar BMC showed a correlation of 0.583–0.721 (MSE 1.568–1.842) and lumbar BMD of 0.632–0.756 (MSE 0.068–0.097). Total hip BMC had a correlation of 0.556–0.690 (MSE 0.448–0.495), while hip BMD ranged from 0.585 to 0.746 (MSE 0.072–0.092). Conclusions: The analysis of spinal CT texture alongside BMD and BMC measures provides a new approach to understanding the relationship between bone and muscle health. The strong correlations expected from our research affirm the importance of integrating bone and muscle measures in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of conditions such as sarcopenia and osteoporosis.
We demonstrated 1.2-kV SiC trench metal–oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors with a double p-base structure via technology computer-aided design simulations (TCAD) and verified their ...breakdown characteristics by performing experiments. Two-different p-bases including a shallow junction and a deep junction were designed via Monte Carlo ion-implantation and two-dimensional device simulations with consideration of the punch-through behavior across the n-source/p-base/drift regions and the suppression of the electric-field crowding at the gate oxide near the bottom corner of the trench. Additionally, the trench depth and the distance between the edge of the deep p-base and the trench sidewall (DPG) were varied for a comparative analysis. When DPG was reduced, the breakdown voltage increased owing to the suppression of the electric field at the gate oxide, while the on-state drain current decreased owing to the increase in the JFET resistance.

This study investigated the effects of a drink supplement containing Momordica charantia extract from bitter melon on physical fitness and levels of stress hormones during a four-week exercise ...training program in a hot environment. Ten male tennis players were orally administrated in a four-week (100 ml, 6 times a day), and the pre- and post-supplementation levels of different physical fitness variables and cortisol, and adrenocorticotropic hormone in plasma were measured at four time-points—before (baseline), during, and after the exercise, and on the next day of the supplementation. The findings showed that the supplementation has significant positive effects on enhancement of physical fitness parameters especially balance (d = 22.10, p = 0.013), flexibility (d = 4.83, p = 0.015), and cardiorespiratory fitness (d = 10.00, p = 0.030). Moreover, the adrenocorticotropic hormone levels were reduced during the exercise, and the cortisol levels showed the decreasing trend during and after the exercise, which was correlated with the change of cardiorespiratory fitness (r = 0.65, p<0.05). These results indicated the possible adaptogenic effects of Momordica charantia extract intake. Based on the findings, we suggest that Momordica charantia could be used as a source of adaptogenic supplement to alleviate the exercise- and environment-induced stress.
Cysteine-cysteine chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) has been discovered as a co-receptor for cellular entry of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Moreover, the role of CCR5 in a variety of cancers and ...various inflammatory responses was also discovered. Despite the fact that several CCR5 antagonists have been investigated in clinical trials, only Maraviroc has been licensed for use in the treatment of HIV patients. This indicates that there is a need for novel CCR5 antagonists. Keeping this in mind, the present study was designed. The active CCR5 inhibitors with known IC
value were selected from the literature and utilized to develop a ligand-based common feature pharmacophore model. The validated pharmacophore model was further used for virtual screening of drug-like databases obtained from the Asinex, Specs, InterBioScreen, and Eximed chemical libraries. Utilizing computational methods such as molecular docking studies, molecular dynamics simulations, and binding free energy calculation, the binding mechanism of selected inhibitors was established. The identified Hits not only showed better binding energy when compared to Maraviroc, but also formed stable interactions with the key residues and showed stable behavior throughout the 100 ns MD simulation. Our findings suggest that Hit1 and Hit2 may be potential candidates for CCR5 inhibition, and, therefore, can be considered for further CCR5 inhibition programs.
