Temporomandibular disorders include a wide spectrum of extra-articular and intra-articular conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). In salvage cases involving intra-articular end-stage ...disease, alloplastic temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR) is a management option which can be utilised to rehabilitate a disabled joint’s function and form. Whilst post-TMJR infection is rare, it is one of the most serious complications. The principles governing TMJR surgery antibiotic prophylaxis have been based on those established in orthopaedic surgery literature. Antibiotic resistance due to antibiotic over-use is a significant concern, therefore antibiotic stewardship has been developed to deal with this world-wide public health concern. The TMJ’s anatomical proximity to the external auditory canal and oral cavity creates the potential for bacterial contamination. The aim of this study was to explore the views of 39 sub-specialist TMJ surgeons across nine nations usual approach to antibiotic prophylaxis and their management of TMJR infection. To accomplish this, an international survey was developed and conducted using Google Forms. The results demonstrated that 97.4% of the respondents employ prophylactic antibiotics at TMJR surgery, 83.8% on discharge. Variability in antibiotic choice with additional antimicrobial perioperative practices were also reported. Opinions on the management of a TMJR infection also varied. This survey establishes there is an agreement on the use of antibiotic prophylaxis, However the variability in choice, timing, course, duration of antibiotic use as well as the management of a postoperative TMJR infection demonstrates the need for further study leading to development of standardised antibiotic prophylaxis and infection management protocols for TMJR surgery.
Global environmental change raises profound moral issues with which society has only begun to grapple. What does fairness mean in dividing responsibilities for problems of global warming between rich ...and poor nations? Does the environment itself have moral standing and, if so, how should its conflicts with the interests of people who depend on the land for their livelihood be resolved? How can the interests of the poor, of indigenous peoples, and of future generations be properly accommodated in a political discourse about environmental policy which is dominated by industrialized states? This book extends the debate both within and across disciplines, engaging philosophers, geographers, political scientists, economists, sociologists, and environmental activists from four continents. The essays address the role of science in global change and argue that western science does not provide morally disinterested solutions to environmental problems. They discuss the role of state and substate actors in the international politics of the environment, and then use accounts of actual negotiations to argue for the centrality of social justice in reaching desirable and equitable agreements. They conclude that a framework for social justice under conditions of global environmental change must include community values and provide for participatory structures to arbitrate among competing interests.
Hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBO2) is used commonly for treatment of bone and soft‐tissue radiation necrosis. It may be a potential therapy for radiation necrosis seen after brain irradiation. HBO2 ...risks include generalized tonic–clonic convulsions. We report a patient after resection of anaplastic astrocytoma and 5,580 cGy of total external‐beam radiation treatments with brain radiation necrosis who underwent HBO2 therapy and developed a partial seizure during treatment. Mechanisms and implications are discussed.

The controversial British writer Ford Madox Ford (1873-1939) is increasingly recognized as a major presence in early twentieth-century literature. He is best-known for his fiction, especially the ...modernist masterpiece The Good Soldier, and the four books making up Parade's End, described by Anthony Burgess as 'the finest novel about the First World War'; and by Samuel Hynes as 'the greatest war novel ever written by an Englishman'. This series, International Ford Madox Ford Studies, has been founded to reflect the recent resurgence of interest in Ford's life and work. Each volume will normally be based upon a particular theme or issue. Each will relate aspects of Ford's work, life, and contacts, to broader concerns of his time. He published nearly eighty books, experimenting with a variety of genres. This first volume explores Ford's diversity, focusing on the best of his less familiar work: his poetry, writings on art, and the novels A Call, The Simple Life Limited, The Marsden Case, and The Rash Act.
The LHCb experiment has been taking data at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN since the end of 2009. One of its key detector components is the Ring-Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) system. This ...provides charged particle identification over a wide momentum range, from 2-100 GeV/c. The operation and control software, and online monitoring of the RICH system are described. The particle identification performance is presented, as measured using data from the LHC. Excellent separation of hadronic particle types (pion, kaon and proton) is achieved.
