Conspectus Photon upconversion, the process of converting low-energy photons into high-energy ones, has been widely applied for solar energy conversion, photoredox catalysis, and various biological ...applications such as background-free bioimaging, cancer therapy, and optogenetics. Upconversion materials that are based on triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA) are of particular interest due to their low excitation power requirements (e.g., ambient sunlight) and easily tunable excitation and emission wavelengths. Despite advances that have been made with respect to TTA upconversion (TTA-UC) in the past decade, several challenges remain for near-infrared light-activatable triplet–triplet annihilation upconversion (NIR TTA-UC). These challenges include low upconversion quantum yield, small anti-Stokes shift, and incompatibility with oxygen, the latter of which seriously limits the practical applications of NIR TTA-UC. This Account will summarize the recent research endeavors to address the above-mentioned challenges and the recent new applications. The first part of this Account highlights recent strategies of molecular design to modulate the excited states of photosensitizers and annihilators, two key factors to determine TTA-UC performance. Novel molecular engineering strategies such as the resonance energy transfer method, dimerization of dye units, and the helix twist molecular structure have been proposed to tune the excited states of photosensitizers. The obtained photosensitizers exhibited enhanced absorption of deep tissue penetrable near-infrared (NIR) light, produced a triplet excited state with elevated energy level and prolonged lifetime, and promoted intersystem crossing, leading to an upgraded TTA-UC system with significantly expanded anti-Stokes shift. With respect to the annihilator, the perylene derivatives were systematically explored, and their attached aromatic groups were found to be the key to adjusting the energy levels of both the triplet and singlet excited states. The resultant optimal TTA-UC system exhibits the highest recorded efficiency among NIR TTA-UC systems. Moreover, to resolve the oxygen-induced TTA-UC quenching, enzymatic reactions were recently introduced. More specifically, the glucose oxidase-catalyzed glucose oxidation reaction showed the ability to rapidly consume oxygen to turn on the TTA-UC luminescence in an aqueous solution. The resultant TTA-UC nanoparticle was able to detect glucose and an enzyme related to glucose metabolism in a highly specific, sensitive, and background-free manner. Further, the upconverted singlet excited state of the annihilator was directly utilized as the catalyst or the excited substrate. For example, the modification of annihilators and drug molecules with photolabile linkages can realize the long wavelength light-induced photolysis. Compared to direct short-wavelength-driven photolysis, this sensitized TTA photolysis (TTAP) exhibits superior reaction yield and lower photodamage, which are important in the release of drugs for tumor treatment in vivo. Moreover, the improved upconversion efficiency can enable the successful coupling of NIR TTA-UC with a visible light absorbing photocatalyst for NIR-driven photoredox catalysis. Compared to direct visible-light photocatalysis, TTA-UC mediated NIR photoredox catalysis showed superior product yield especially in large scale reaction systems owing to the deep penetration power of NIR light. More interestingly, among a few promising technology applications, three-dimensional (3D) printing based on photopolymerization can operate with faster speed and energy-input several orders of magnitude lower when the two-photon polymerization is replaced with TTA-UC mediated polymerization. We believe this Account will spur interest in the further development and application of TTA-UC in the areas of energy, chemistry, material science, and biology.
•Propose a machine learning based privacy-preserving fair data trading model in big data market.•Present a concrete construction of fair data trading protocol.•Analyze the security of the proposed ...protocol.•Implement the proposed protocol.
In the era of big data, the produced and collected data explode due to the emerging technologies and applications that pervade everywhere in our daily lives, including internet of things applications such as smart home, smart city, smart grid, e-commerce applications and social network. Big data market can carry out efficient data trading, which provides a way to share data and further enhances the utility of data. However, to realize effective data trading in big data market, several challenges need to be resolved. The first one is to verify the data availability for a data consumer. The second is privacy of a data provider who is unwilling to reveal his real identity to the data consumer. The third is the payment fairness between a data provider and a data consumer with atomic exchange. In this paper, we address these challenges by proposing a new blockchain-based fair data trading protocol in big data market. The proposed protocol integrates ring signature, double-authentication-preventing signature and similarity learning to guarantee the availability of trading data, privacy of data providers and fairness between data providers and data consumers. We show the proposed protocol achieves the desirable security properties that a secure data trading protocol should have. The implementation results with Solidity smart contract demonstrate the validity of the proposed blockchain-based fair data trading protocol.
Tissue penetration depth is a major challenge in practical photodynamic therapy (PDT). A biocompatible and highly effective near infrared (NIR)-light-absorbing carbazole-substituted BODIPY (Car-BDP) ...molecule is reported as a class of imaging-guidable deep-tissue activatable photosensitizers for PDT. Car-BDP possesses an intense, broad NIR absorption band (600–800 nm) with a remarkably high singlet oxygen quantum yield (ΦΔ = 67%). After being encapsulated with biodegradable PLA–PEG-FA polymers, Car-BDP can form uniform and small organic nanoparticles that are water-soluble and tumor-targetable. Rather than using laser light, such nanoparticles offer an unprecedented deep-tissue, tumor targeting photodynamic therapeutic effect by using an exceptionally low-power-density and cost-effective lamp light (12 mW cm–2). In addition, these nanoparticles can be simultaneously traced in vivo due to their excellent NIR fluorescence. This study signals a major step forward in photodynamic therapy by developing a new class of NIR-absorbing biocompatible organic nanoparticles for effective targeting and treatment of deep-tissue tumors. This work also provides a potential new platform for precise tumor-targeting theranostics and novel opportunities for future affordable clinical cancer treatment.
Gliding is a distinctive locomotion type that has been identified in only three mammal species from the Mesozoic era. Here we describe another Jurassic glider that belongs to the euharamiyidan ...mammals and shows hair details on its gliding membrane that are highly similar to those of extant gliding mammals. This species possesses a five-boned auditory apparatus consisting of the stapes, incus, malleus, ectotympanic and surangular, representing, to our knowledge, the earliest known definitive mammalian middle ear. The surangular has not been previously identified in any mammalian middle ear, and the morphology of each auditory bone differs from those of known mammals and their kin. We conclude that gliding locomotion was probably common in euharamiyidans, which lends support to idea that there was a major adaptive radiation of mammals in the mid-Jurassic period. The acquisition of the auditory bones in euharamiyidans was related to the formation of the dentary-squamosal jaw joint, which allows a posterior chewing movement, and must have evolved independently from the middle ear structures of monotremes and therian mammals.
Triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion nanoparticles have attracted considerable interest due to their promises in organic chemistry, solar energy harvesting and several biological applications. ...However, triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion in aqueous solutions is challenging due to sensitivity to oxygen, hindering its biological applications under ambient atmosphere. Herein, we report a simple enzymatic strategy to overcome oxygen-induced triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion quenching. This strategy stems from a glucose oxidase catalyzed glucose oxidation reaction, which enables rapid oxygen depletion to turn on upconversion in the aqueous solution. Furthermore, self-standing upconversion biological sensors of such nanoparticles are developed to detect glucose and measure the activity of enzymes related to glucose metabolism in a highly specific, sensitive and background-free manner. This study not only overcomes the key roadblock for applications of triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion nanoparticles in aqueous solutions, it also establishes the proof-of-concept to develop triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion nanoparticles as background free self-standing biological sensors.
Organic triplet–triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) materials have considerable promise in areas as broad as biology, solar energy harvesting, and photocatalysis. However, the development of ...highly efficient near-infrared (NIR) light activatable TTA-UC systems remains extremely challenging. In this work, we report on a method of systematically tailoring an annihilator to attain such outstanding systems. By chemical modifications of a commonly used perylene annihilator, we constructed a family of perylene derivatives that have simultaneously tailored triplet excited state energy (T1) and singlet excited state energy (S1), two key annihilator factors to determine TTA-UC performance. Via this method, we were able to tune the TTA-UC system from an endothermic type to an exothermic one, thus significantly elevating the upconversion performance of NIR light activatable TTA upconversion systems. In conjunction with the photosensitizer PdTNP (10 μM), the upconversion efficiency using the optimal annihilator (100 μM) identified in this study was measured to be 14.1% under the low-power density of NIR light (100 mW/cm2, 720 nm). Furthermore, using such a low concentration of perylene derivative, we demonstrated that the optimal TTA-UC pair developed in our study can act as a highly effective light wavelength up-shifter to enable NIR light to drive a photoredox catalysis that otherwise requires visible light. We found that such an NIR driven method is highly effective and can even surpass directly visible light driven photoredox catalysis. This method is important for photoredox catalysis as NIR light can penetrate much deeper in colored photoredox catalysis reaction solutions, especially when done in a large-scale manner. Furthermore, this TTA-UC mediated photoredox catalysis reaction is found to be outdoor sunlight operable. Thus, our study provides a solution to enhance NIR activatable organic upconversion and set the stage for a wide array of applications that have previously been limited by the suboptimal efficiency of the existing TTA upconversion materials.
Practices oriented to digital technologies are being invented to change how people cope with crises. This study examines how Chinese netizens’ networked practices (e.g., liking, sharing, or ...commenting) with COVID-19 related duanzi (short online satires) influenced their psychological well-being, external social support, and issue knowledge during the pandemic. The role of social capital in moderating these relations is explored. Findings from the survey demonstrate that the act of “liking” a COVID-19 duanzi on WeChat has become a routine practice for Chinese netizens to kill time during the quarantine. However, the more bonding social capital one already had, the less they depended on duanzi “liking” to kill their boredom. Those less supported outside the family household, or less knowledgeable about the virus were also more likely to share a COVID-19 duanzi. Bonding social capital promotes one’s well-being, therefore, the positive psychological effect of duanzi sharing or commenting grows more pronounced for netizens with more bonding social capital. Bridging social capital brought external social support. Netizens with more bridging social capital obtained more external support and more COVID-19 knowledge from duanzi sharing. The theoretical and practical implications are elaborated in the conclusions.
Existing health education and communication research routinely measures online channel use as a whole by, for example, evaluating how frequently people use the internet to search for health ...information. This approach fails to capture the complexity and diversity of online channel use in health information seeking. The measurement of generic online channel use may cause too much error, and it lends no support to media planning in public health promotion campaigns or scholarly research involving online channel use.
This study intends to present a thorough picture of patterns of online health information channel use and classify the use of various types of online health information channels, including WeChat, microblogs, web portals, search engines, mobile apps, and online forums. Under the framework of the risk information seeking and processing model, this study also analyzes the differences in individuals' motivations for channel selection to offer further evidence to validate the classification scheme.
This study sampled 542 Chinese internet users in Beijing. The average age of the respondents was 33 years, female respondents accounted for 52.0% (282/542) of the sample, and the average monthly income ranged from US $900 to $1200. The study surveyed the use of 13 commonly used online health information channels and various sociopsychological factors associated with online health information seeking.
This study derived 3 categories of online health information channels: searching, browsing, and scanning channels. It was found that the use of online searching channels was affect driven (B=0.11; β=0.10; P=.02) and characterized by a stronger need for health knowledge (B=0.09; β=0.01; P<.001). The use of browsing channels was directly influenced by informational subjective norms (B=0.33; β=0.15; P=.004) and perceived current knowledge (B=0.007; β=0.09; P=.003). The use of scanning channels was mainly influenced by informational subjective norms (B=0.29; β=0.15; P=.007).
The results of this study suggest that health communication practitioners and scholars may consider measuring the use of internet, new media, or online media more precisely instead of simply asking the public about the frequency of online channel use or internet use in the acquisition of health information. Scholars and practitioners may consider measuring the use of online health information channels by using the 3-category scheme described in this study. Future research is encouraged to further explore how people process health information when using different online channels.
A strategy to expand anti‐Stokes shifting from the far‐red to deep‐blue region in metal‐free triplet–triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA‐UC) is presented. The method is demonstrated by in vivo ...titration of the photorelease of an anticancer prodrug. This new TTA system has robust brightness and the longest anti‐Stokes shift of any reported TTA system. TTA core–shell‐structured prodrug delivery capsules that benefit from these properties were developed; they can operate with low‐power density far‐red light‐emitting diode light. These capsules contain mesoporous silica nanoparticles preloaded with TTA molecules as the core, and amphiphilic polymers encapsulating anticancer prodrug molecules as the shell. When stimulated by far‐red light, the intense TTA upconversion blue emission in the system activates the anticancer prodrug molecules and shows effective tumor growth inhibition in vivo. This work paves the way to new organic TTA upconversion techniques that are applicable to in vivo photocontrollable drug release and other biophotonic applications.
Seeing red: Triplet–triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA‐UC) has robust brightness and the record longest anti‐Stokes shift from far‐red to deep‐blue light. TTA core–shell‐structured nanocapsules photorelease coumarin–chlorambucil (Cou‐C) prodrug upon irradiation with low‐power density far‐red light‐emitting diode (LED) light, to achieve potent tumor growth inhibition in vivo.
Sequence image target tracking has two requirements of accuracy and speed. Aiming at the problem of slow speed of convolutional neural network (CNN) target tracking algorithm, an improved algorithm ...for sequence image target tracking is designed by using a fusion of Faster multidomain CNN (MDNet) and optical flow method. The target algorithm designed in this article is improved on the basis of MDNet. The optical flow method is used to obtain the primary selection box first, which can effectively deal with the challenges brought by scale change and in-plane rotation, and has good tracking speed and performance. The objective algorithm of this article is used to explore the Marangoni effect in the melting process of solid iron tailings in molten blast furnace slag. Because the main component of iron tailings is Silica, and the melting point of Silica is the highest, so taking Silica as the research object, an intelligent analysis of Marangoni effect in high-temperature melting process of Silica particles is realized. The results show that the target algorithm achieves the real-time standard (FPS > 24), the average distance precision (DP) is 97.3%, the average success rate (SR) is 98.02%, the average center location error (CLE) is 6.2684 μ m, and the average overlap precision (OP) coverage is 63.86%. The target algorithm has certain advantages in the following five evaluation indexes: DP, SR, CLE, OP, and frames per second.
