The electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) offers a sustainable solution towards ammonia production but suffers poor reaction performance owing to preferential catalyst–H formation and the ...consequential hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Now, the Pt/Au electrocatalyst d‐band structure is electronically modified using zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF) to achieve a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of >44 % with high ammonia yield rate of >161 μg mgcat−1 h−1 under ambient conditions. The strategy lowers electrocatalyst d‐band position to weaken H adsorption and concurrently creates electron‐deficient sites to kinetically drive NRR by promoting catalyst–N2 interaction. The ZIF coating on the electrocatalyst doubles as a hydrophobic layer to suppress HER, further improving FE by >44‐fold compared to without ZIF (ca. 1 %). The Pt/Au‐NZIF interaction is key to enable strong N2 adsorption over H atom.
A kinetically driven ambient nitrogen reduction reaction has a Faradaic efficiency of over 44 % and an ammonia yield rate of over 161 μg mgcat−1 h−1. It employs a zeolitic imidazole framework to induce electron‐deficient sites on the catalyst and a lower d‐band to weaken catalyst–H interactions whilst promoting the catalyst–N2 interaction.
Conspectus Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a molecular-specific spectroscopic technique that provides up to 1010-fold enhancement of signature Raman fingerprints using nanometer-scale 0D ...to 2D platforms. Over the past decades, 3D SERS platforms with additional plasmonic materials in the z-axis have been fabricated at sub-micrometer to centimeter scale, achieving higher hotspot density in all x, y, and z spatial directions and higher tolerance to laser misalignment. Moreover, the flexibility to construct platforms in arbitrary sizes and 3D shapes creates attractive applications besides traditional SERS sensing. In this Account, we introduce our library of substrate-based and substrate-less 3D plasmonic platforms, with an emphasis on their non-sensing applications as microlaboratories and data storage labels. We aim to provide a scientific synopsis on these high-potential yet currently overlooked applications of SERS and ignite new scientific discoveries and technology development in 3D SERS platforms to tackle real-world issues. One highlight of our substrate-based SERS platforms is multilayered platforms built from micrometer-thick assemblies of plasmonic particles, which can achieve up to 1011 enhancement factor. As an alternative, constructing 3D hotspots on non-plasmonic supports significantly reduces waste of plasmonic materials while allowing high flexibility in structural design. We then introduce our emerging substrate-less plasmonic capsules including liquid marbles and colloidosomes, which we further incorporate the latter within an aerosol to form centimeter-scale SERS-active plasmonic cloud, the world’s largest 3D SERS platform to date. We then discuss the various emerging applications arising only from these 3D platforms, in the fields of sensing, microreactions, and data storage. An important novel sensing application is the stand-off detection of airborne analytes that are several meters away, made feasible with aerosolized plasmonic clouds. We also describe plasmonic capsules as excellent miniature lab-in-droplets that can simultaneously provide in situ monitoring at the molecular level during reaction, owing to their ultrasensitive 3D plasmonic shells. We highlight the emergence of 3D SERS-based data storage platforms with 10–100-fold higher storage density than 2D platforms, featuring a new approach in the development of level 3 security (L3S) anti-counterfeiting labels. Ultimately, we recognize that 3D SERS research can only be developed further when its sensing capabilities are concurrently strengthened. With this vision, we foresee the creation of highly applicable 3D SERS platforms that excel in both sensing and non-sensing areas, providing modern solutions in the ongoing Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Population-wide surveillance of COVID-19 requires tests to be quick and accurate to minimize community transmissions. The detection of breath volatile organic compounds presents a promising option ...for COVID-19 surveillance but is currently limited by bulky instrumentation and inflexible analysis protocol. Here, we design a hand-held surface-enhanced Raman scattering-based breathalyzer to identify COVID-19 infected individuals in under 5 min, achieving >95% sensitivity and specificity across 501 participants regardless of their displayed symptoms. Our SERS-based breathalyzer harnesses key variations in vibrational fingerprints arising from interactions between breath metabolites and multiple molecular receptors to establish a robust partial least-squares discriminant analysis model for high throughput classifications. Crucially, spectral regions influencing classification show strong corroboration with reported potential COVID-19 breath biomarkers, both through experiment and in silico. Our strategy strives to spur the development of next-generation, noninvasive human breath diagnostic toolkits tailored for mass screening purposes.

Wheat straw biochars produced at 400, 600 and 800°C (BC400, BC600 and BC800) were used to selectively adsorb PAHs from soil washing effluents. For soil washing effluents contained Phenanthrene (PHE), Fluoranthene (FLU), Pyrene (PYR) and Triton X-100 (TX100), biochars at 2 (for BC800) or 6gL−1 (for BC400 and BC600) can remove 71.8–98.6% of PAHs while recover more than 87% of TX100. PAH removals increase with increasing biochar dose. However, excess biochar is detrimental to the recovery of surfactant. For a specific biochar dose, PAH removal and TX100 loss increase with increasing pyrolytic temperature. For BC400 and BC600, PAH removal follows the order of PHE>FLU>PYR, while the order is reversed with PYR>FLU>PHE for BC800. Biochars have much higher sorption affinity for PAHs than for TX100. It is therefore suggested that biochar is a good alternative for selective adsorption of PAHs and recovery of TX100 in soil washing process.
Background:
Dementia is a gradual decline in cognitive ability and is becoming more common in our elderly population. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is defined as a slight clinical deterioration of ...memory capacity, below the level of normal aging, but does not constitute a clinical diagnosis of dementia. To date, no interventions have been proven to cure MCI and dementia fully.
Purpose:
To evaluate the potential effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia and evaluate the methodological quality of systematic reviews (SRs).
Methods:
We conducted a literature search for SRs with meta-analyses in seven Chinese and international databases through October 1, 2020. The basic characteristics of the included SRs/meta-analyses and the basic information of the original included randomized controlled trials were extracted by three reviewers independently. A meta-analysis of the original randomized controlled trials from the included SRs/meta-analyses was performed using Stata 12.0 software. The Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews 2 was used to assess the methodological quality of the included SRs/meta-analyses, and the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation was used to rate the quality of evidence.
Results:
A total of 35 SRs/meta-analyses were included, and the majority showed that acupuncture was more effective than western medicine or conventional therapy for MCI and dementia odds ratio =1.39; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.24, 1.56. There was a statistically significant difference in the Mini-Mental State Examination score (weighted mean difference = 1.23; 95% CI: 0.78, 1.68;
p
< 0.00001), and there was no significant improvement in the activities of daily living score (weighted mean difference = 1.58; 95% CI: −0.02, 3.18;
p
= 0.053). The assessment results of Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews 2 showed that the methodological quality of most included SRs/meta-analyses was critically low; the lowest scores were items 2, 7, and 10. For Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation, of the 73 outcomes, 50 (68.5%) outcomes were low or very low quality, and 23 (31.5%) outcomes were moderate quality.
Conclusions:
Acupuncture can be considered as an alternative for the treatment of MCI and dementia when western medicine or other therapies are contraindicated. More high-quality evidence is needed to determine further the effectiveness of acupuncture.
Abstract Background Medical disputes, which are prevalent in China, are a growing global public health problem. The Chinese government has proposed third-party mediation (TPM) to resolve this issue. ...However, the characteristics, efficiency, and influencing factors of TPM in resolving medical disputes in public hospitals in China have yet to be determined. Methods We conducted a systematic study using TPM records from medical disputes in Gansu Province in China from 2014 to 2019. A χ2 test was used to compare differences between groups, and binary logistic analysis was performed to determine the factors influencing the choice of TPM for resolving medical disputes. Results We analyzed 5,948 TPM records of medical disputes in Gansu Province in China. The number of medical disputes and the amount of compensation awarded in public hospitals in the Gansu Province increased annually from 2014 to 2019, with most of the disputes occurring in secondary and tertiary hospitals. Approximately 89.01% of the medical disputes were handled by TPM; the average compensation amount with TPM was Chinese Yuan (CNY) 48,688.73, significantly less than that awarded via court judgment and judicial mediation. TPM was more likely to succeed in settling medical disputes in the < CNY10,000 compensation group than in the no-compensation group (odds ratio OR = 3.14, 95% confidence interval CI 1.53–6.45). However, as the compensation amount increased, the likelihood of choosing TPM decreased significantly. Moreover, TPM was less likely to be chosen when medical disputes did not involve death (OR = 0.49, 95% CI 0.36–0.45) or when no-fault liability was determined (vs. medical accidents; OR = 0.37, 95% CI 0.20–0.67). Conclusion Our findings demonstrate that TPM mechanisms play a positive role in efficiently reducing compensation amounts and increasing medical dispute resolution rates which was the main settlement method in resolving medical disputes in public hospitals of Gansu Province in China. TPM could help greatly reduce conflicts between doctors and patients, avoid litigation, and save time and costs for both parties. Moreover, compensation amounts, non-fatal outcomes, and no-fault liability determinations influence the choice of TPM for settling medical disputes.

We extend the ~500-residue, ~50-kilodalton (kD) dissociation limitation of this top-down methodology by using electrospray additives, heated vaporization, and separate noncovalent and covalent bond dissociation. This process can cleave 287 interresidue bonds in the termini of a 1314-residue (144-kD) protein, specify previously unidentified disulfide bonds between 8 of 27 cysteines in a 1714-residue (200-kD) protein, and correct sequence predictions in two proteins, one with 2153 residues (229 kD).
Recent evidence suggests that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are key regulators in the pathological process of ischemic stroke (IS). Maternally expressed gene 3 (MEG3) was observed to be up-regulated ...in IS, acting as a competing endogenous RNA for miR-181b to regulate ischemic brain injury. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association of tagSNPs in MEG3 (i.e., rs7158663 and rs4081134) and miR-181b rs322931 with IS risk.
Genomic DNA was extracted from blood samples of 509 patients with IS and 668 healthy controls. Genotyping of MEG3 rs7158663, rs4081134, and miR-181b rs322931 was performed by TaqMan assay. The transcriptional activity was measured using the Dual-Luciferase Reporter Assay kit.
Single-site analysis revealed a significantly higher risk of IS being associated with miR-181b rs322931 CT and CT/TT genotypes (CT vs. CC: adjusted OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.13-1.95, P = 0.005; CT/TT vs. CC: adjusted OR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.17-1.97, P = 0.002). Combined analyses revealed that combined genotypes (rs7158663 GG + rs322931 CT/TT and rs7158663 AG/AA + rs322931 CT/TT) increased IS risk compared to genotypes of rs7158663 GG + rs322931 CC. Stratification analyses showed that patients carrying miR-181b rs322931 CT/TT genotypes had higher levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL_C) (P = 0.01). Moreover, results from logistic regression analysis showed that rs322931 CT/TT genotypes were risk factors besides hypertension, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL_C. Further dual-luciferase reporter assay showed that the rs322931 T allele had lower levels of luciferase activity than the rs322931 C allele.
These findings indicate that miR-181b rs322931 may singly or jointly contribute to the risk of IS.
Yinzhihuang (YZH), a traditional Chinese medicine prescription, was widely used to treat cholestasis. Cholestatic liver injury limited the use of the immunosuppressive drug cyclosporine A (CsA) in ...preventing organ rejection after solid organ transplantation. Clinical evidences suggested that YZH could enhance bile acids and bilirubin clearance, providing a potential therapeutic strategy against CsA-induced cholestasis. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether YZH can effectively alleviate CsA-induced cholestatic liver injury, as well as the molecular mechanisms responsible for its hepatoprotective effects. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the hepatoprotective effects of YZH on CsA-induced cholestatic liver injury and explore its molecular mechanisms in vivo and vitro. The results demonstrated that YZH significantly improved the CsA-induced cholestatic liver injury and reduced the level of liver function markers in serum of Sprague–Dawley (SD) rats. Targeted protein and gene analysis indicated that YZH increased bile acids and bilirubin efflux into bile through the regulation of multidrug resistance-associated protein 2 (Mrp2), bile salt export pump (Bsep), sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (Ntcp) and organic anion transporting polypeptide 2 (Oatp2) transport systems, as well as upstream nuclear receptors farnesoid X receptor (Fxr). Moreover, YZH modulated enzymes involved in bile acids synthesis and bilirubin metabolism including Cyp family 7 subfamily A member 1 (Cyp7a1) and uridine 5'-diphosphate (UDP) glucuronosyltransferase family 1 member A1 (Ugt1a1). Furthermore, the active components geniposidic acid, baicalin and chlorogenic acid exerted regulated metabolic enzymes and transporters in LO2 cells. In conclusion, YZH may prevent CsA-induced cholestasis by regulating the transport systems, metabolic enzymes, and upstream nuclear receptors Fxr to restore bile acid and bilirubin homeostasis. These findings highlight the potential of YZH as a therapeutic intervention for CsA-induced cholestasis and open avenues for further research into its clinical applications.
