Depuis leur domestication, les équidés sont étroitement associés aux activités humaines et ont, au fil des siècles, été façonnés au gré d’exigences morphologiques, esthétiques, d’allure ou de ...performance. Cette sélection artificielle a fortement impacté leurs traits phénotypiques et fonctionnels, produisant le large panel des races actuelles. Les sources historiques ont abondamment décrit l’importance des équidés et la diversité de leurs usages dans les sociétés passées. Ceci interroge donc sur la potentielle existence de types morphologiques spécialisés à des périodes antérieures à l’émergence des races. Dans ce contexte, les os présentent un intérêt particulier en tant que reflet des caractéristiques morphologiques et fonctionnelles des animaux du passé. En outre, les équidés étant fréquemment retrouvés sous la forme de squelettes complets en contexte archéologique,leurs restes offrent la possibilité d’étudier l’intégralité de la morphologie squelettique et notamment les interactions entre les os. Pourtant, les restes osseux d’équidés restent relativement peu exploités, probablement en raison des limites inhérentes aux méthodes d’étude actuelles. L’objectif de ce travail est de mieux comprendre la diversité phénotypique et fonctionnelle des équidés domestiques par des approches en morphométriegéométrique. La question de leur identification spécifique est tout d’abord abordée via la recherche de critères discriminants, qualitatifs et quantitatifs, applicables à du matériel archéologique. Les patterns de covariation entre les os sont ensuite explorés afin d’aborder des questions fonctionnelles. Les résultats révèlent une forte intégration morphologique entre les os des membres chez les équidés domestiques et mettent en évidence des différences entre les races selon un axe de covariation principalement porté par des interactions fonctionnelles. Ceci tend à montrer que la sélection artificielle, considérée comme le principal acteur de la diversification morphologique chez le cheval domestique, n’influence pas seulement le phénotype mais aussi les facteurs biologiques qui le sous-tendent. Enfin, une première application à des spécimens archéologiques permet dediscuter l’impact de potentielles formes de sélection artificielle et de standardisation morphologique sur des chevaux anciens. Les résultats démontrent l’intérêt d’étudier non seulement les variations de forme des os, mais aussi leurs covariations, afin d’enrichir nos connaissances concernant les traits morphologiques et fonctionnels des animaux passés, ainsi que les pratiques d’élevage qui y sont associées. L’étude des covariations contribueégalement à accroitre notre compréhension des processus micro-évolutifs, tels que la sélection artificielle, et à travers cela, permet de mieux documenter la manière dont la diversité phénotypique est produite.
Equids and humans share a long history of interaction from the first domestication to the standardization of modern breeds. In order to suit human activities, they have been molded through selection for conformation, harmony, gaits, or performance. This artificial selection is known to have largely impacted morphological and functional traits, producing the large range of current breeds. Historical sources extensively described the widepanel of equid usage in different human civilizations, raising the issue of the potential existence of specialized morphological types in the past, prior to the emergence of modern breeds. In this respect, bones prove to be of particular interest, as an image of the phenotypic and functional characteristics of past animals. Moreover, horses being often found as complete skeletons in archaeological contexts, their remains allow for the study of the complete skeletal morphology, especially concerning the interactions between bones. However, equid bone remains are largely under-explored, probably due to the recurrent limitations inherent to existing study methods. The objective of this work is to describe and understand the phenotypic and functional diversity of domestic equids, using geometric morphometrics approaches. Identification issues are firstly addressed through the research of qualitative and quantitative discrimination criteria, applicable to archaeological samples. Next, morphological and functional questions are addressed, especially investigating bone shape covariation. The obtained results reveal strong morphological integration within equid limb bones and evidenced breed specific differences along a covariation axis largely produced by functional interactions between bones. They show thatartificial selection, regarded as responsible of most of the modern diversification of horse breeds, not only targets the phenotype but also impacts the biological factors which underlie it. Finally, a first application to archaeological skeletons allows to question the influence of potential artificial selection and morphological standardization on past horses. The results demonstrate the interest of not only exploring bone shape variation,but also covariation, to increase our knowledge about the morphological and functional traits of past equids and about the related breeding practices. The study of morphological integration may also contribute to enhance our understanding of micro-evolutionary processes, such as artificial selection on domestic taxa, and through that, gain insights into how phenotypic diversity is produced.
Phenotypic variation was characterized in 187 modern and archaeological specimens of the lesser white-toothed shrew (Crocidura suaveolens), obtained from both insular and continental European ...locations. Geometric morphometric methods were used to quantify variation in size and shape of the mandible. The phenotypic distance between populations, and the influence of several eco-geographical factors on the size and shape of the mandible in island populations, were assessed. Based on mandible shape divergence, the populations of C. suaveolens were clustered into continental, insular Atlantic and insular Mediterranean groups. Archaeological specimens from Molène Island, more than 3400 years old, display a mandible shape signal closer to that of the continental population than those of modern island populations. Conversely, the continental shape signals of the modern populations from Höedic and Sark suggest that these are relatively recent anthropogenic introductions. The populations of C. suaveolens from both the Atlantic and Mediterranean islands (except for Rouzic and Cyprus) show a significant increase in mandible size, compared to those from continental Europe. Significant phenotypic differences support the indigenous condition of C. suaveolens on most of the Atlantic islands, suggesting that the species arrived there before the separation of the Scilly Isles and Ushant from the continent due to the post-glacial rise in sea level. This provides an ante quem for its colonization of the north-western fringe of continental Europe, notwithstanding its absence from the region in the present day.

Several Late Pleistocene and Holocene South-East Asian subfossil deposits are known to contain important osteological assemblages of Monitor lizards (Varanus sp.) possibly accumulated by past human ...populations. Indeed, thanks to their large sizes, Monitor lizards are supposed to have been an important source of meat intake for past hunter-gatherer groups. However, the taphonomic and zooarchaeological study of their bones currently suffers from strong limitations related to the lack of appropriate comparative frameworks concerning their osteology and osteometry. These limitations preclude having a good understanding of the biological characteristics of subfossil individuals but also of their accumulation process in the sites and their possible exploitation by past humans. In the present study, we try to solve these issues by producing size and weight estimation equations using bone measurements that are applicable to subfossil Southeast Asian Varanus. These equations are then applied to the study of an archaeological assemblage of Varanus from a Late Pleistocene Thai deposit, the Doi Pha Kan rock shelter. The obtained data help to demonstrate that these lizards were accumulated by Hoabinhian hunter-gatherers, and allow for the description of the hunting strategies of these human groups. We also demonstrate the interest to develop new methodological tools concerning taxa of tropical areas that present a rich biodiversity but remain understudied in zooarchaeology.
Plusieurs dépôts subfossiles d’Asie du Sud-est datant de la fin du Pléistocène et de l’Holocène sont connus pour avoir livré d’importantes quantités de restes de Varans (Varanus sp.) qui reflètent possiblement une activité de prédation par l’Homme. En effet, du fait de leur taille importante, les varans sont supposés avoir été chassés et consommés par les groupes de chasseurs-cueilleurs préhistoriques. Cependant, l’étude taphonomique et archéozoologique des restes de Varans demeure complexe et limitée du fait d’un manque de travaux concernant l’ostéologie et l’ostéométrie de ces lézards. De ce fait, il est actuellement impossible de documenter les caractéristiques biologiques des varans subfossiles, les processus d’accumulation de leurs ossements dans les sites, ainsi que les modalités de leur possible exploitation par l’Homme. Dans ce travail, nous tentons de résoudre ces problèmes en proposant des équations d’estimation de taille et de poids basées sur des mesures ostéologiques et applicables aux varans du Sud-Est asiatique. Nous appliquons ensuite ces équations à l’étude d’un assemblage archéologique de Varans provenant d’un site thaïlandais datant de la fin du Pléistocène, l’abri sous-roche de Doi Pha Kan. Les données obtenues démontrent que les restes subfossiles de Varans ont été accumulés par les chasseurs-cueilleurs hoabinhiens et permettent de décrire les stratégies de chasse de ces groupes humains. Nous démontrons également l’intérêt de développer de nouveaux outils méthodologiques, notamment concernant les taxons de régions présentant une riche biodiversité telles que les aires tropicales, zones qui restent pourtant très peu étudiées en archéozoologie.

Excavated from 2003 to 2011, the site of Beg ar Loued in the southern part of Molène Island has yielded few remains of Early and Middle Neolithic. At these periods, the Molène plateau was already ...insularized. During the Late Neolithic, a permanent settlement is set up, it is known only through shell middens. However, the largest set of data has been obtained for the Early Bronze Age with the recognition of two dry stone houses superimposed and occupied between 2150 and 1750 cal BC. At this time, the Molène Archipelago was in a similar form as today, except the foreshores, which were much larger. The site was then a hundred meters from the shoreline. in Y. Pailler et C. They used to farm and breed livestock, supplemented by fishing on the foreshore, collecting limpets and to a lesser extent hunting migratory birds. The material culture shows that this group used local resources: clay, sea pebbles and outcrops. This picture of a self-sufficient society must be qualified. Indeed, the architecture of buildings, the ceramic forms, the lithic technology and the metalwor-king are evidence that this society was linked with what was happening on the mainland. That raises question of seafaring and the nature of the links between this island society and the continent.
Fouillé de 2003 à 2011, le site de Beg ar Loued au sud de l'île de Molène a livré quelques vestiges du Néolithique ancien et moyen 1. Au Néolithique final, une occupation pérenne des lieux se met en place, elle n'est connue qu'à travers des niveaux de dépotoirs. Pour l'âge du Bronze ancien, nous disposons d'un jeu plus complet de données avec la reconnaissance de deux maisons en pierres sèches superposées et occupées de 2150 à 1750 cal BC. À cette période, le plateau Molénais, déjà insulaire depuis le Néolithique ancien, se présentait dans une forme assez proche de l'actuel, exception faite des estrans qui étaient beaucoup plus vastes. Le site se trouvait alors à une centaine de mètres du trait de côte. L'étude du site a permis de mieux comprendre le mode de vie de cette société insulaire. Celle-ci pratiquait l'agriculture et l'élevage, complétés par la pêche sur estran, la collecte des patelles et, dans une moindre mesure, la chasse aux oiseaux migrateurs. La culture matérielle montre que ce groupe exploitait les ressources locales : argile, cordons de galets et affleurements rocheux. Ce tableau d'une société autarcique se doit pourtant d'être nuancé, car l'architecture des bâtiments, les formes céramiques, la technologie lithique et la métallurgie sont autant d'indices montrant que cette société n'était pas à l'écart des circuits d'échange et qu'elle était en phase avec les changements et les innovations culturels identifiés sur le proche continent. Dès lors, se pose la question de la navigation et de la nature des liens qu'entretenait cette société insulaire avec le continent.
