We have investigated the isoscalar giant resonances in the Sn isotopes using inelastic scattering of 386-MeV {alpha} particles at extremely forward angles, including 0 deg. We have obtained ...completely 'background-free' inelastic-scattering spectra for the Sn isotopes over the angular range 0 deg. -9 deg. and up to an excitation energy of 31.5 MeV. The strength distributions for various multipoles were extracted by a multipole decomposition analysis based on the expected angular distributions of the respective multipoles. We find that the centroid energies of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in the Sn isotopes are significantly lower than the theoretical predictions. In addition, based on the ISGMR results, a value of K{sub {tau}}=-550+-100 MeV is obtained for the asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility. Constraints on interactions employed in nuclear structure calculations are discussed on the basis of the experimentally obtained values for K{sub {infinity}} and K{sub {tau}}.
We examine a method to determine the neutron-skin thickness of nuclei using data on the charge-exchange anti-analog giant dipole resonance (AGDR). Calculations performed using the relativistic ...proton–neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pn-RQRPA) reproduce the isotopic trend of the excitation energies of the AGDR, as well as that of the spin-flip giant dipole resonances (IVSGDR), in comparison to available data for the even–even isotopes 112–124Sn. It is shown that the excitation energies of the AGDR, obtained using a set of density-dependent effective interactions which span a range of the symmetry energy at saturation density, supplemented with the experimental values, provide a stringent constraint on value of the neutron-skin thickness. For 124Sn, in particular, we determine the value ΔRpn=0.21±0.05 fm. The result of the present study shows that a measurement of the excitation energy of the AGDR in (p,n) reactions using rare-isotope beams in inverse kinematics, provides a valuable method for the determination of neutron-skin thickness in exotic nuclei.
“Background-free” spectra of inelastic α-particle scattering have been measured at a beam energy of 385 MeV in 90,92Zr and 92Mo at extremely forward angles, including 0°. The ISGMR strength ...distributions for the three nuclei coincide with each other, establishing clearly that nuclear incompressibility is not influenced by nuclear shell structure near A∼90 as was claimed in recent measurements.
Recent data on isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in the calcium isotopes 40,44,48Ca have suggested that Kτ, the asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility, has a positive value. A value ...of Kτ>0 is entirely incompatible with present theoretical frameworks and, if correct, would have far-reaching implications on our understanding of myriad nuclear and astrophysical phenomena. This paper presents results of an independent ISGMR measurement with the 40,42,44,48Ca(α,α′) reaction at Eα=386 MeV. These results conclusively discount the possibility of a positive value for Kτ, and are consistent with the previously-obtained values for this quantity.
The decay of the 21.47-MeV stretched resonance in 13C, arising from p3/2→d5/2 nucleon excitation coupled to maximum spin, was investigated in a (p,p′) experiment at 135 MeV proton bombarding energy, ...performed at the Cyclotron Centre Bronowice (CCB) at IFJ PAN in Krakow. First experimental information on the proton and neutron decay branches from this state was obtained by using coincidence measurement of protons inelastically scattered on a 13C target and γ rays from daughter nuclei, namely, 12B (proton decay) and 12C (neutron decay). The main branches lead to the Jπ=2+, first-excited state at 0.953 MeV in 12B, and to the Jπ=1+, T=1 level at 15.110 MeV in 12C. The results were compared with predictions from the Gamow Shell Model (GSM), which was used to describe the stretched resonance in terms of its energy, width, electromagnetic transition strengths and decay pattern. A very good agreement was obtained between the measured and calculated properties of the 21.47-MeV stretched resonance in 13C, demonstrating the high-quality and precision of the GSM wave function calculations, which include coupling to the resonant and non-resonant particle continuum.
“Why are the tin isotopes soft?” has remained, for the past decade, an open problem in nuclear structure physics: models which reproduce the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in the ...“doubly-closed shell” nuclei, 90Zr and 208Pb, overestimate the ISGMR energies of the open-shell tin and cadmium nuclei, by as much as 1 MeV. In an effort to shed some light onto this problem, we present results of detailed studies of the ISGMR in the molybdenum nuclei, with the goal of elucidating where–and how–the softness manifests itself between 90Zr and the cadmium and tin isotopes. The experiment was conducted using the 94,96,98,100Mo(α,α′) reaction at Eα=386 MeV. A comparison of the results with relativistic, self-consistent Random-Phase Approximation calculations indicates that the ISGMR response begins to show softness in the molybdenum isotopes beginning with A=92.

Some studies have shown that metformin inhibits the proliferation of breast cancer (BC) cells via multiple ways. One of these mechanisms is through the indirect control of the IGF-route mediated via ...the activation of the AMPK-LKB1 pathway in the liver, which leads to a decrease in blood glucose and insulin levels. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of metformin as adjuvant to chemotherapy on IGF levels in female patients with progressive and non-progressive metastatic BC.
In this trial, 107 women receiving chemotherapy for metastatic breast cancer (MBC) were divided into two groups: the metformin group received 500 mg of metformin twice daily, whereas the control group did not receive any metformin. All patients received chemotherapy according to the South Egypt Cancer Institute's (SECI) established regimen. The level of IGF-1 was determined in the blood at the initiation of therapy (baseline) and at six months post treatment.
No substantial differences were noted regarding IGF-1 levels in both groups at baseline (IGF-1 average level was 40.74 ± 36.16 vs. 32.06 ± 20.00 in the metformin and the placebo group, respectively, p = 0.462). While after six months, the mean IGF-1 level was 37.62 ± 31.35 vs. 39.12 ± 2 5.93 in the metformin and placebo groups, respectively, (p = 0.170).
Metformin as an adjuvant to chemotherapy in MBC patients had no significant effect on reducing IGF-l levels which promotes the inhibition of the proliferation of BC cells in MBC patients.
