Heat stroke in a 21-year-old soldier was complicated by acute renal failure with rhabdomyolysis, hypophosphatemia, hypocalcemia, sinus bradycardia and massive liver necrosis. Treatment included ...general supportive measures, forced alkaline diuresis and IV fresh frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate and was followed by complete recovery.
A plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (ALD) process was developed for the growth of SiN x thin films using Si2Cl6 and NH3 plasma. At substrate temperatures ≤400 °C, we show that this ALD process ...leads to films with >95% conformality over high aspect ratio nanostructures with a growth per cycle of ∼1.2 Å. The film growth mechanism was studied using in situ attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Our data show that on the SiN x growth surface, Si2Cl6 reacts with surface −NH2 groups to form surface −NH species, which are incorporated into the growing film. In the subsequent half cycle, radicals generated in the NH3 plasma abstract surface Cl atoms, and restore an NH x (x = 1,2)-terminated surface. Surface Si–N–Si bonds are also primarily formed during the NH3 plasma half-cycle. The infrared data and Rutherford backscattering combined with hydrogen forward scattering shows that the films contain ∼23% H atoms primarily incorporated as −NH groups.
We report on the first successful extraction of a β+ Gamow-Teller strength distribution from a radioactive isotope in an intermediate-energy charge-exchange experiment in inverse kinematics. The ...(7Li,7Be+γ(429 keV)) reaction at 100A MeV was used to measure Gamow-Teller transition strengths from 34P to states in 34Si. The results show that little mixing occurs between sd and pf shell configurations for the low-lying 0+ and 2+ states even though 34Si neighbors the island of inversion and low-lying 2ℏω intruder states exist. Shell-model calculations in the sdpf model space are consistent with these findings.
Synthetic single-crystal diamond has recently emerged as a promising platform for Raman lasers at exotic wavelengths due to its giant Raman shift, large transparency window and excellent thermal ...properties yielding a greatly enhanced figure-of-merit compared to conventional materials. To date, diamond Raman lasers have been realized using bulk plates placed inside macroscopic cavities, requiring careful alignment and resulting in high threshold powers (~W-kW). Here we demonstrate an on-chip Raman laser based on fully-integrated, high quality-factor, diamond racetrack micro-resonators embedded in silica. Pumping at telecom wavelengths, we show Stokes output discretely tunable over a ~100nm bandwidth around 2-{\mu}m with output powers >250 {\mu}W, extending the functionality of diamond Raman lasers to an interesting wavelength range at the edge of the mid-infrared spectrum. Continuous-wave operation with only ~85 mW pump threshold power in the feeding waveguide is demonstrated along with continuous, mode-hop-free tuning over ~7.5 GHz in a compact, integrated-optics platform.
Down syndrome patients are apparently not suited for peritoneal dialysis because of lacking cooperation. We report on an adult Down syndrome patient living in a difficult social environment suffering ...from ESRD due to posterior urethral valve. Comorbid conditions include decreased left ventricular function, hepatitis B carrier stage and hypothyroidism. The committed mother of the patient treats the patient successfully by peritoneal dialysis for a period of two years without episode of peritonitis.
