Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection rates in the United States continue unabated among some groups, with young adults of color at greater risk than others. This study sought to determine ...college students' knowledge, perceptions, and behaviors related to HIV/AIDS. Undergraduate students (N = 443) at a large, urban Hispanic-serving institution in south Texas were surveyed. Participants' self-reported knowledge of HIV transmission was moderate; significant differences exist between age and ethnic groups for some items. Implications for education and prevention campaigns are discussed. (Contains 4 tables.)
This study examined reading, math, writing, social, behavioral, and communication learning goals for a large, national sample of elementary students with complex support needs served in one of four ...types of educational placements. Each goal was coded for three quality characteristics: (1) strengths-focus, (2) inclusion of self-determination skills, and (3) description of the context and content of goals, and identification of needed supports. The findings suggest ongoing issues with the expectations in goals for students with complex support needs across placement types, consistent with past research. There was a general lack of focus on student-directed learning and activities as well as a lack of identification of student-initiated supports. Goal quality characteristics varied across goal domains and placements; descriptive findings suggest that goals aligned with academic standards and social-behavioral-communication competencies were more common for students in inclusive general education classrooms. Implications for research and practice are described. This paper will be published in "Inclusion."
Parents and teachers have identified the social inclusion of students with complex support needs as one of the most important components of school participation. Previous research has found that the ...opportunities for, and importance of, social contacts for students with complex support needs vary by educational placement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a national sample of 92 elementary-aged students with complex support needs to determine whether placement predicts the number and importance of social contacts. We used multilevel regression analysis to measure the extent to which placement predicts the number of social contacts and teachers' ratings of importance. Students in inclusive placements had almost 50% more social contacts than students in a segregated school. Furthermore, teachers' perceptions of the social significance of the contacts experienced by students with complex support needs were notably higher in inclusive settings. Given these findings, we suggest implications for practice and future research. Students with complex support needs frequently experience restrictive educational placements such as self-contained and separate school classrooms. Given the need to support students with complex ...support needs to experience positive outcomes and make progress in the general education curriculum, there is a need to investigate the characteristics of the classroom contexts in which they are learning. The purpose of this study was to use ecobehavioral assessment observation methods to investigate how student behaviors, educator behaviors, and classroom ecology vary across general education, resource, self-contained, and separate school classrooms. We observed 116 students with complex support needs across the United States, and results indicated that contextual features of resource, self-contained, and separate school classrooms do not offer superior levels of instruction or supports for students with complex support needs as compared to general education classrooms. We were more likely to observe no one interacting with the focus student, no instruction, and the presence of distractions in self-contained and separate school classrooms compared to general education classrooms. Implications for policy, research, and practice are presented. This paper was published in "Research and Practice for Persons with Severe Disabilities" v47 n4 p209-228 2022 (EJ1355237).
Decision-making in many application domains needs to take into consideration of some sorts of networks. Examples include e-commerce and marketing 6, 10, strategic planning 21, knowledge management ...12, and Web mining 5, 13. Since the late 1990s a large number of articles have been published in Nature, Science, and other leading journals in many disciplines, proposing new network models, techniques, and applications (e.g., 3, 22, 25). This trend has been accompanied by the increasing popularity of social networking sites such as FaceBook and MySpace. As a result, research on social network data mining, or simply network mining, has attracted much attention from both academics and practitioners.
