The ATLAS experiment is one of the multi-purpose experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, constructed to study elementary particle interactions in collisions of high-energy proton ...beams. Twelve different sub detectors as well as the common experimental infrastructure are controlled and monitored by the Detector Control System (DCS) using a highly distributed system of 140 server machines running the industrial SCADA product PVSS. Higher level control system layers allow for automatic control procedures, efficient error recognition and handling, manage the communication with external systems such as the LHC controls, and provide a synchronization mechanism with the ATLAS data acquisition system. Different databases are used to store the online parameters of the experiment, replicate a subset used for physics reconstruction, and store the configuration parameters of the systems. This contribution describes the computing architecture and software tools to handle this complex and highly interconnected control system.
Evidence is reported for a narrow structure near the $J/\psi\phi$ threshold in exclusive $B^+\to J/\psi\phi K^+$ decays produced in $\bar{p} p $ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96 \TeV$. A signal of ...$14\pm5$ events, with statistical significance in excess of 3.8 standard deviations, is observed in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $2.7 \ifb$, collected by the CDF II detector. The mass and natural width of the structure are measured to be $4143.0\pm2.9(\mathrm{stat})\pm1.2(\mathrm{syst}) \MeVcc$ and $11.7^{+8.3}_{-5.0}(\mathrm{stat})\pm3.7(\mathrm{syst}) \MeVcc$.
We report the observation of B{sub s}{sup 0}-B{sub s}{sup 0} oscillations from a time-dependent measurement of the B{sub s}{sup 0}-B{sub s}{sup 0} oscillation frequency {delta}m{sub s}. Using a data ...sample of 1 fb{sup -1} of pp collisions at {radical}(s)=1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, we find signals of 5600 fully reconstructed hadronic B{sub s} decays, 3100 partially reconstructed hadronic B{sub s} decays, and 61 500 partially reconstructed semileptonic B{sub s} decays. We measure the probability as a function of proper decay time that the B{sub s} decays with the same, or opposite, flavor as the flavor at production, and we find a signal for B{sub s}{sup 0}-B{sub s}{sup 0} oscillations. The probability that random fluctuations could produce a comparable signal is 8x10{sup -8}, which exceeds 5{sigma} significance. We measure {delta}m{sub s}=17.77{+-}0.10(stat){+-}0.07(syst) ps{sup -1} and extract vertical bar V{sub td}/V{sub ts} vertical bar =0.2060{+-}0.0007({delta}m{sub s}){sub -0.0060}{sup +0.0081}({delta}m{sub d}+theor)
We report the observation and measurement of the mass of the bottom, strange baryon Xi-_b through the decay chain Xi-_b --> J/psi Xi-, where J/psi --> mu+ mu-, Xi- --> Lambda pi+-, and Lambda --> p ...pi+-, and Lambda --> p pi+-. Evidence for observation is based on a signal whose probability of arising from the estimated background is 6.6 x 10-15, or 7.7 Gaussian standard deviations. The Xi-_b mass is measured to be 5792.9 +/- 2.5 (stat.) +/-1.7 (syst.) MeV/c2.
We have searched for exclusive 2-photon production in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV, using 532/pb of integrated luminosity taken by the Run II Collider Detector at Fermilab. The ...event signature requires two electromagnetic showers, each with transverse energy E_T > 5 GeV and pseudorapidity |eta|<1.0, with no other particles detected in the event. Three candidate events are observed. We discuss the consistency of the three events with gamma-gamma, pi0-pi0, or eta-eta production. The probability that other processes fluctuate to 3 events or more is 1.7x10^-4. An upper limit on the cross section of p+pbar --> p+gamma-gamma+pbar is set at 410 fb with 95% confidence level.
Data collected in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron are searched for indications of new electroweak-scale physics. Rather than focusing on particular new physics scenarios, CDF data are analyzed for ...discrepancies with the standard model prediction. A model-independent approach (Vista) considers gross features of the data, and is sensitive to new large cross-section physics. Further sensitivity to new physics is provided by two additional algorithms: a Bump Hunter searches invariant mass distributions for ``bumps'' that could indicate resonant production of new particles; and the Sleuth procedure scans for data excesses at large summed transverse momentum. This combined global search for new physics in 2.0/fb of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV reveals no indication of physics beyond the standard model.
We report a measurement of resonance parameters of the orbitally excited (L=1) narrow B^0 mesons in decays to B^{(*)+}\pi^- using 1.7/fb of data collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab ...Tevatron. The mass and width of the B^{*0}_2 state are measured to be m(B^{*0}_2) = 5740.2^{+1.7}_{-1.8}(stat.) ^{+0.9}_{-0.8}(syst.) MeV/c^2 and \Gamma(B^{*0}_2) = 22.7^{+3.8}_{-3.2}(stat.) ^{+3.2}_{-10.2}(syst.) MeV/c^2. The mass difference between the B^{*0}_2 and B^0_1 states is measured to be 14.9^{+2.2}_{-2.5}(stat.) ^{+1.2}_{-1.4}(syst.) MeV/c^2, resulting in a B^0_1 mass of 5725.3^{+1.6}_{-2.2}(stat.) ^{+1.4}_{-1.5}(syst.) MeV/c^2. This is currently the most precise measurement of the masses of these states and the first measurement of the B^{*0}_2 width.
