ABSTRACT We present a measurement of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) gravitational lensing potential using data from the first two seasons of observations with SPTpol, the ...polarization-sensitive receiver currently installed on the South Pole Telescope. The observations used in this work cover 100 deg2 of sky with arcminute resolution at 150 GHz. Using a quadratic estimator, we make maps of the CMB lensing potential from combinations of CMB temperature and polarization maps. We combine these lensing potential maps to form a minimum-variance (MV) map. The lensing potential is measured with a signal-to-noise ratio of greater than one for angular multipoles between . This is the highest signal-to-noise mass map made from the CMB to date and will be powerful in cross-correlation with other tracers of large-scale structure. We calculate the power spectrum of the lensing potential for each estimator, and we report the value of the MV power spectrum between as our primary result. We constrain the ratio of the spectrum to a fiducial ΛCDM model to be AMV = 0.92 0.14 (Stat.) 0.08 (Sys.). Restricting ourselves to polarized data only, we find APOL = 0.92 0.24 (Stat.) 0.11 (Sys.). This measurement rejects the hypothesis of no lensing at using polarization data alone, and at using both temperature and polarization data.
GPR41 and GPR43 are related members of a homologous family of orphan G protein-coupled receptors that are tandemly encoded
at a single chromosomal locus in both humans and mice. We identified the ...acetate anion as an agonist of human GPR43 during
routine ligand bank screening in yeast. This activity was confirmed after transient transfection of GPR43 into mammalian cells using Ca 2+ mobilization and 35 Sguanosine 5â²- O -(3-thiotriphosphate) binding assays and by coexpression with GIRK G protein-regulated potassium channels in Xenopus laevis oocytes. Other short chain carboxylic acid anions such as formate, propionate, butyrate, and pentanoate also had agonist
activity. GPR41 is related to GPR43 (52% similarity; 43% identity) and was activated by similar ligands but with differing
specificity for carbon chain length, with pentanoate being the most potent agonist. A third family member, GPR42 , is most likely a recent gene duplication of GPR41 and may be a pseudogene. GPR41 was expressed primarily in adipose tissue, whereas the highest levels of GPR43 were found
in immune cells. The identity of the cognate physiological ligands for these receptors is not clear, although propionate is
known to occur in vivo at high concentrations under certain pathophysiological conditions.
Background: Full field and pattern electroretinograms (ERG, PERG) are performed to assess generalised retinal function and macular function, respectively. An (electro) negative full field ERG usually ...describes an ISCEV standard maximal response in which the b-wave is smaller than a normal or minimally reduced a-wave and indicates dysfunction that is post-phototransduction. The most common cause of a unilateral negative ERG is central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) or birdshot chorioretinopathy (BCR). This study examines the clinical and electrophysiological features of patients with unilateral negative ERG who do not have CRAO or BCR. Methods: 12 patients were ascertained with a unilateral negative ERG in whom a vascular aetiology and BCR were excluded. Most presented with symptoms of central retinal dysfunction. In 11 of the 12 patients additional long duration photopic stimuli were used to test cone system ON and OFF responses. Results: All 12 patients had unilateral electronegative bright flash full field ERGs indicating total or relative preservation of rod photoreceptor function, but dysfunction post-phototransduction. Seven of these patients had non-specific inflammatory changes in the eye with the negative ERG. Six patients, including five with inflammatory signs, had involvement of the cone ON response with complete preservation of cone OFF responses. A further three patients showed evidence of cone ON response abnormality with less severe OFF response involvement. Conclusion: The ERGs in this heterogeneous group of patients predominantly showed post-phototransduction involvement of the ON pathways. Sparing of the cone OFF response was often observed. The majority of patients had signs of previous inflammation and it is speculated that these highly unusual unilateral changes may be mediated via an autoimmune mechanism.
We present cosmological parameter constraints obtained from galaxy clusters identified by their SunyaevZel'dovich effect signature in the 2500 square-degree South Pole Telescope Sunyaev Zel'dovich ...(SPT-SZ) survey. We consider the 377 cluster candidates identified at z > 0.25 with a detection significance greater than five, corresponding to the 95% purity threshold for the survey. We compute constraints on cosmological models using the measured cluster abundance as a function of mass and redshift. We include additional constraints from multi-wavelength observations, including Chandra X-ray data for 82 clusters and a weak lensing-based prior on the normalization of the mass-observable scaling relations. Assuming a spatially flat Lambda CDM cosmology, we combine the cluster data with a prior on H-0 and find sigma(8)= 0.784. +/- 0.039 and Omega(m) = 0.289. +/- 0.042, with the parameter combination sigma(8) (Omega(m)/0.27)(0.3) = 0.797 +/- 0.031. These results are in good agreement with constraints from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) from SPT, WMAP, and Planck, as well as with constraints from other cluster data sets. We also consider several extensions to Lambda CDM, including models in which the equation of state of dark energy w, the species-summed neutrino mass, and/or the effective number of relativistic species (N-eff) are free parameters. When combined with constraints from the Planck CMB, H-0, baryon acoustic oscillation, and SNe, adding the SPT cluster data improves the w constraint by 14%, to w = -1.023 +/- 0.042.
Joint analyses of cross-correlations between measurements of galaxy positions, galaxy lensing, and lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) offer powerful constraints on the large-scale ...structure of the Universe. In a forthcoming analysis, we will present cosmological constraints from the analysis of such cross-correlations measured using Year 3 data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), and CMB data from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and Planck. Here we present two key ingredients of this analysis: (1) an improved CMB lensing map in the SPT-SZ survey footprint and (2) the analysis methodology that will be used to extract cosmological information from the cross-correlation measurements. Relative to previous lensing maps made from the same CMB observations, we have implemented techniques to remove contamination from the thermal Sunyaev Zel’dovich effect, enabling the extraction of cosmological information from smaller angular scales of the cross-correlation measurements than in previous analyses with DES Year 1 data. We describe our model for the cross-correlations between these maps and DES data, and validate our modeling choices to demonstrate the robustness of our analysis. We then forecast the expected cosmological constraints from the galaxy survey-CMB lensing auto and cross-correlations. We find that the galaxy-CMB lensing and galaxy shear-CMB lensing correlations will on their own provide a constraint on S8=σ8√Ωm/0.3 at the few percent level, providing a powerful consistency check for the DES-only constraints. We explore scenarios where external priors on shear calibration are removed, finding that the joint analysis of CMB lensing cross-correlations can provide constraints on the shear calibration amplitude at the 5% to 10% level.

Abstract
SPT-3G is the third survey receiver operating on the South Pole Telescope dedicated to high-resolution observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Sensitive measurements of the ...temperature and polarization anisotropies of the CMB provide a powerful data set for constraining cosmology. Additionally, CMB surveys with arcminute-scale resolution are capable of detecting galaxy clusters, millimeter-wave bright galaxies, and a variety of transient phenomena. The SPT-3G instrument provides a significant improvement in mapping speed over its predecessors, SPT-SZ and SPTpol. The broadband optics design of the instrument achieves a 430 mm diameter image plane across observing bands of 95, 150, and 220 GHz, with 1.2′ FWHM beam response at 150 GHz. In the receiver, this image plane is populated with 2690 dual-polarization, trichroic pixels (∼16,000 detectors) read out using a 68× digital frequency-domain multiplexing readout system. In 2018, SPT-3G began a multiyear survey of 1500 deg

of the southern sky. We summarize the unique optical, cryogenic, detector, and readout technologies employed in SPT-3G, and we report on the integrated performance of the instrument.
We present a demonstration of delensing the observed cosmic microwave background (CMB) B-mode polarization anisotropy. This process of reducing the gravitational-lensing-generated B-mode component ...will become increasingly important for improving searches for the B modes produced by primordial gravitational waves. In this work, we delens B-mode maps constructed from multi-frequency SPTpol observations of a 90 deg2 patch of sky by subtracting a B-mode template constructed from two inputs: SPTpol E-mode maps and a lensing potential map estimated from the Herschel 500 m map of the cosmic infrared background. We find that our delensing procedure reduces the measured B-mode power spectrum by % in the multipole range this is shown to be consistent with expectations from simulations and to be robust against systematics. The null hypothesis of no delensing is rejected at . Furthermore, we build and use a suite of realistic simulations to study the general properties of the delensing process and find that the delensing efficiency achieved in this work is limited primarily by the noise in the lensing potential map. We demonstrate the importance of including realistic experimental non-idealities in the delensing forecasts used to inform instrument and survey-strategy planning of upcoming lower-noise experiments, such as CMB-S4.
We present a catalog of galaxy cluster candidates, selected through their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect signature in the first 720 deg2 of the South Pole Telescope (SPT) survey. This area was mapped ...with the SPT in the 2008 and 2009 austral winters to a depth of ~18 mu KCMB-arcmin at 150 GHz; 550 deg2 of it was also mapped to ~44 mu KCMB-arcmin at 95 GHz. We report photometrically derived redshifts for confirmed clusters and redshift lower limits for the remaining candidates. The catalog extends to high redshift with a median redshift of z = 0.55 and maximum confirmed redshift of z = 1.37. Forty-five of the clusters have counterparts in the ROSAT bright or faint source catalogs from which we estimate X-ray fluxes. A multi-wavelength observation program to improve the cluster mass calibration will make it possible to realize the full potential of the final 2500 deg2 SPT cluster catalog to constrain cosmology.
We report on observations of the pulsar/Be star binary system PSR J2032+4127/MT91 213 in the energy range between and with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array and Major Atmospheric ...Gamma Imaging Cherenkov telescope arrays. The binary orbit has a period of approximately 50 years, with the most recent periastron occurring on 2017 November 13. Our observations span from 18 months prior to periastron to one month after. A new point-like gamma-ray source is detected, coincident with the location of PSR J2032+4127/MT91 213. The gamma-ray light curve and spectrum are well characterized over the periastron passage. The flux is variable over at least an order of magnitude, peaking at periastron, thus providing a firm association of the TeV source with the pulsar/Be star system. Observations prior to periastron show a cutoff in the spectrum at an energy around . This result adds a new member to the small population of known TeV binaries, and it identifies only the second source of this class in which the nature and properties of the compact object are firmly established. We compare the gamma-ray results with the light curve measured with the X-ray Telescope on board the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and with the predictions of recent theoretical models of the system. We conclude that significant revision of the models is required to explain the details of the emission that we have observed, and we discuss the relationship between the binary system and the overlapping steady extended source, TeV J2032+4130.
