The author aims to present the etymology and history of the laicity principle as an important part of the political history of the West, particularly of France. The laicity idea has a very important ...place in the context of church-state relations, of separation of the two, and of their cooperation in certain areas (in models of cooperation). Since the concepts of laicity, secularism, secularisation and laicisation are often used in such a way as to make clear distinction impossible, an outline of their fundamental distinctions and an elucidation of possible ways of their use in political science seem to be fully justified. With regard to their etymological origins (Greek, Latin and French sources), the above-mentioned concepts are part of the common European tradition of establishing relations between the church and the state, relying on foundations which have demonstrated, in the course of history, their importance and various political applications.
The article deals with the separation of church and state as the key historical turning point in the creation of one of the fundamental determining factors of contemporary states and political ...systems. The author gives an account of the contributions of the American and European political traditions, and presents a very comprehensive historical context in which Christianity introduced a new model of relations between church and state. The Western tradition of church-state interrelations is essentially characterized by the problem of separation, and by various legal-political arrangements founded on the principle of separation of church and state. Consequently, the article aims to put forward some of the relevant ideas which contributed to the creation of the church separation principle, as well as some of the basic elements of the relations between church and state in contemporary political systems.
The author discusses historical development of the relation between the Church and the State in Great Britain from the separation from the Roman Catholic Church in 1534 to contemporary changes. In ...accordance with the premises of historical institutionalism, the paper tries to identify milestones in the relation between the Church and the State which have decisively shaped the creation of the contemporary British model of the relation between the two. Since the British model has often been simplified to the model of the “State Church” in different overviews of the relation between the Church and the State in Europe, the paper aims to present some of the key characteristics of regulation of the Church-State relation and social changes which result in modifications to the ideal type of the “State Church”. In this respect, it is noteworthy to examine the debate on the multicultural society in Great Britain, as well as possibilities and limitations of the numerous theories of multiculturalism. Bearing in mind the fact that the British model of the relation between the Church and the State stands representative for similar models found in other Scandinavian countries, the application of this research can be extended to the European level in the process of finding a common approach to the dialogue with different Churches, religious communities and communities of atheistic and agnostic beliefs.
Author deals with the problem of the transfer of McDonaldization theory of
society within the field of religion theory. This work claims that if we accept the mcdonaldization
theory of society it ...could lead us to speak about mcdonaldization of religion,
or at least about some religious phenomena. As an example, the author points the
processes within new religious mouvements, new trends within Catholic church after
the II Vatican Council, and different churches and religious communities. As the other
parts of the society under the process of the mcdonaldization, new trends of religious
phenomena could be named as McReligion.

The relationship between the European Union and churches, religious associations and associations of various non-religious beliefs is institutionalised by Declaration 11 of the Treaty of Amsterdam, ...the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union (Art. 10) and the Treaty of Lisbon (Art. 17 of the Consolidated version of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union). As the treaties on the creation of the European Community and, later, the European Union failed to mention the relationship towards religious associations, which is perfectly understandable considering the contents of the treaties, a dialogue arose only with the informal, and, thereupon, more and more official initiatives between the European Commission and the representatives of the leading religious associations. Through an attempt to identify key landmarks in the relationship between the European Union and churches and non-confessional organisations, this paper seeks to explore the possibilities for historical institutionalism in researching the political system of the European Union. The key landmarks can be observed among churches and religious associations, as well as among the political bodies of the European Union. In studying the changes leading to the creation of a European model of the relationship towards religious associations, the paper focuses on the working of the European Commission, while leaving the impact of European legislation (which includes rulings by the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights) for a broader analysis of this relationship.
Odnos Europske Unije i crkava, religijskih zajednica i udruženja različitih nereligioznih uvjerenja institucionaliziran je Deklaracijom br. 11 Ugovora iz Amsterdama, Poveljom o temeljnim pravima ...Europske Unije (čl. 10.) i Lisabonskim ugovorom (čl. 17. Konsolidirane verzije Ugovora o funkcioniranju Europske Unije).
