Curcumin can reduce the production of brain inflammatory mediators and symptoms of brain diseases. However, a large amount of free curcumin needs to be administered to achieve an effective level in ...the brain because of its poor water-solubility. Fucoidan and chitosan were reported to respectively target P-selectin and acidic microenvironment expressed by pathologically inflammatory cells/tissues. Herein, the self-assembly of chitosan and fucoidan which could encapsulate curcumin was developed to form the multi-stimuli-responsive nanocarriers, and their pathological pH- and P-selectin-responsive aspects were characterized. Through intranasal delivery to the brain, these curcumin-containing chitosan/fucoidan nanocarriers with dual pH-/P-selectin-targeting properties to the brain lesions improved drug delivery, distribution, and accumulation in the inflammatory brain lesions as evidenced by an augmented inhibitory effect against brain inflammation. This promising multifunctional nanocarrier with a novel drug-delivery route should allow potential clinical biomedical uses by neurosurgeon in the future.
PurposeFood packaging pictures are one of the most important extrinsic cues for consumers to evaluate food products before purchasing. Over the past decades, marketers have used exaggerated pictures ...to attract consumers' attention, enhance their attitude toward a product and increase their purchase intention. This study examined the interplay of “puff-up” product picture, food type and picture type in influencing consumers' responses via persuasion knowledge.Design/methodology/approachThe research comprises two 2 × 2 factorial experiments. Study 1 tested the interaction effect of puffery (high vs low) and food type (utilitarian vs. hedonic) on consumers' responses using two fictitious brands of prepared food, whereas Study 2 tested the interaction effect of puffery (high vs. low) and picture type (ingredients vs. cooked food) using a fictitious brand of Chinese delicacy.FindingsResults demonstrated that the degree of picture puffery did not influence consumers' responses to utilitarian food and ingredient image. Conversely, consumers were sensitive to puffery when they see hedonic food and cooked-food image. Our findings also suggested that consumers' persuasion knowledge mediates the relationship between puffery and their responses.Practical implicationsThe presented findings facilitate marketers to know consumers' attitude about food puffery pictures.Originality/valueThis research is one of the first efforts to empirically explore the influences of persuasion knowledge on food puffery pictures. The importance of this work is underscored by the fact that a growing number of visual exaggerations are adopted on food packaging.

Topological phase classifications have been intensively studied via machine-learning techniques where different forms of the training data are proposed in order to maximize the information ...extracted from the systems of interests. Due to the complexity in quantum physics, advanced mathematical architecture should be considered in designing machines. In this work, we incorporate quaternion algebras into data analysis either in the frame of supervised and unsupervised learning to classify two-dimensional Chern insulators. For the unsupervised-learning aspect, we apply the principal component analysis on the quaternion-transformed eigenstates to distinguish topological phases. For the supervised-learning aspect, we construct our machine by adding one quaternion convolutional layer on top of a conventional convolutional neural network. The machine takes quaternion-transformed configurations as inputs and successfully classify all distinct topological phases, even for those states that have different distributions from those states seen by the machine during the training process. Our work demonstrates the power of quaternion algebras on extracting crucial features from the targeted data and the advantages of quaternion-based neural networks than conventional ones in the tasks of topological phase classifications.
Microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism, type II (MOPD II) is a rare disease that is assumed to be caused by a pericentrin (PCNT) gene mutation. Clinical manifestations have been reported ...in pediatrics and neurology; however, only a few ocular findings have been documented.
We present three unrelated cases of MOPD II with similar facial features and short stature. Unlike the cases described in the literature, all subjects had normal birth weight and height but their growth was retarded thereafter. In addition to delayed milestones, they have a broad forehead, maxillary protrusion, long peaked nose, high nasal bridge, low-set large ears, extreme reromicrogenia, and normal-sized teeth. These three patients had similar ocular manifestations with the short axial length associated with high hyperopia more than + 9 diopters (D) and macular scarring. The oldest subject was a 20 year-old male without neurological symptoms. One female subject had developed alopecia during the previous 2 years. The other female subject had moyamoya disease, but a genetic study revealed a normal PCNT gene.
This is the first report of MOPD II focusing on ocular findings, suggesting that macular dystrophy and high hyperopia are the common ocular characteristics of MOPD II. Prompt referral to an ophthalmologist is essential. Although refractive amblyopia can be treated with optical correction, visual prognosis may be poor due to maculopathy.
The determination of pesticide residues is an indispensable task in controlling food safety and environment protection. Carbendazim is one of the extensive uses of pesticides in the agricultural ...industry. In this study, a simple method utilizing syringe filter has been applied as electrospray ionization emitter for mass spectrometric identification and quantification of carbendazim in complex matrices including soil, natural water, and fruit juice samples, which contain many insoluble materials. With online syringe filter of the complex samples, most of insoluble materials such as soil were excluded in spray ionization process due to the filter effect, and analytes were subsequently sprayed out from syringe needle for mass spectrometric detection. The pore sizes of filters and diameters of syringe needles also were investigated. The analytical performances, including the linear range (1–200 ng·mL−1), limit of detection (0.2–0.6 ng·mL−1, S/N > 3), limit of quantitation (3.5–8.6 ng·mL−1, S/N > 10), reproducibility (6.4%–12.5%, n = 6), and recoveries (72.1%–91.0%, n = 6) were well acceptable for direct analysis of raw samples. Matrix effect for detection of carbendazim in soil samples also was experimentally investigated. This study demonstrated that syringe filter needle coupled with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry is a simple, efficient, and sensitive method for detection of pesticide residues in water, soil, and fruit juice for risk assessment.
Introduction
Patients with depressive disorder demonstrate rest–activity rhythm disturbances and cognitive function impairment. This study examined the association of individual rest–activity rhythm ...changes over time with mood symptoms and attention.
Methods
We recruited 15 adult outpatients with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder from a single medical center and observed them for 12 months. Weekly rest–activity parameters, including rhythm characteristics generated from nonparametric circadian rhythm analysis, were retrieved from actigraphy data. Attention was evaluated weekly with a smartphone-based psychomotor vigilance test upon awakening. Depressive symptom severity was evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) fortnightly. The association of rest–activity parameters with BDI score and attention was examined using generalized linear mixed regression. A fixed-effects analysis was used to examine the association between rest–activity parameters and depressive episodes.
Results
An advanced bedtime and most active continuous 10 h starting time were associated with depressive symptom severity but also associated with higher vigilance test performance. A longer sleep duration, mainly due to an earlier bedtime, was associated with depressive symptom severity. Compared to remission, sleep duration was 27.8 min longer during depressive episodes, and bed time was 24 min earlier. A shorter sleep duration and increased activity during sleep were associated with poorer attention.
Discussion
Rest–activity rhythms change with mood symptoms among patients with depressive disorder. The circadian rhythms of rest–activity among patients with depressive disorder should be distinguished during various mood states in future studies.
Mycotoxin citrinin (CTN), commonly found in food and health supplements, may induce chromosomal instability. In this study, human renal proximal tubule epithelial cells (hRPTECs) that were exposed to ...CTN (10 and 20 μM) over 3 days exhibited numerical chromosomal aberrations. Short-term (3 days) and long-term (30 days) exposures to CTN significantly promoted mitotic spindle abnormalities, wound healing, cell migration, and anchorage-independent growth in human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK293) cells. Short-term exposure to 10 and 20 μM CTN increased the number of migrated cells on day 10 by 1.7 and 1.9 times, respectively. The number of anchorage-independent colonies increased from 2.2 ± 1.3 to 7.8 ± 0.6 after short-term exposure to 20 μM CTN and from 2.0 ± 1.0 to 12.0 ± 1.2 after long-term exposure. The transcriptomic profiles of CTN-treated HEK293 were subjected to over-representative analysis (ORA), gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA), and Ingenuity pathway analysis (IPA). Short-term exposure to CTN promoted the RTK/KRAS/RAF/MAPK cascade, while long-term exposure altered the extracellular matrix organization. Both short- and long-term CTN exposure activated cancer and cell cycle-related signaling pathways. These results demonstrate the carcinogenic potential of CTN in human cells and provide valuable insights into the cancer risk associated with CTN.
Zeolites are strongly hydrophilic materials that are widely used as water adsorbents. They are also promising candidates for antifogging coatings; however, researchers have yet to devise a suitable ...method for coating glass substrates with zeolite-based films. Here, we report on a direct wet deposition technique that is capable of casting zeolite films on glass substrates without exposing the glass to highly basic solutions or the vapors used in zeolite synthesis. We began by preparing cast solutions of pure silica zeolite MFI synthesized in hydrothermal reactions of various durations. The solutions were then applied to glass substrates via spin-on deposition to form zeolite films. The resulting zeolite MFI thin films were characterized in terms of transmittance to visible light, surface topography, thin film morphology, and crystallinity. Wetting and antifogging properties were also probed. We found that hydrophilicity and antifogging capability increased with the degree of thin film crystallinity. We also determined that the presence of the amorphous silica in the thin films is critical to transparency. Fabricating high-performance zeolite-based antifogging coatings requires an appropriate composition of zeolite crystals and amorphous silica.
PurposeGiven the importance of third-party endorsements as external cues during purchase evaluations, the manipulation of endorsements may raise consumers’ suspicion and thereby reduce the ...effectiveness of marketing messages. Consumers find it increasingly difficult to distinguish between authentic and biased brand reviews. This research conducts two experiments regarding brand rankings of third-parties in four industries. Study 1 aims to probes the interaction effect of persuasion knowledge and fairness of rating method (fair vs. unfair) on brand rankings’ credibility and brand image enhancement. Study 2 examines the interplay of dispositional persuasion knowledge and reputation of third parties (high vs. low).Design/methodology/approachThis research builds on an analysis of data (Study 1, N = 122; Study 2, N = 123) from Taiwan, where brand rankings held by third-party organizations are regular. The hypotheses were tested using SPSS’s PROCESS macro.FindingsDrawing on previous research of persuasion knowledge, the authors find that a fair rating method and a high reputation of third-party organization can mitigate the negative effect of persuasion knowledge.Practical implicationsThe results of this research suggest that marketers need to manage third-party endorsements carefully. Consumer skepticism toward these endorsements (e.g. third-party’s brand rankings) can be weakened when persuasion attempt is considered appropriate.Originality/valueThis is one of the first efforts to empirically explore the influences of persuasion knowledge on third-party endorsements. The importance of this work is underscored by the fact that a growing number of third-party endorsements are sponsored or even manipulated by brand owners.
Fluoroscopy-induced chronic radiation dermatitis (FICRD) is a complication of fluoroscopy-guided intervention. Unlike acute radiation dermatitis, FICRD is different as delayed onset and usually ...appears without preexisting acute dermatitis. Unfortunately, the chronic and progressive pathology of FICRD makes it difficult to treat, and some patients need to receive wide excision and reconstruction surgery. Due to lack of standard treatment, investigating underlying mechanism is needed in order to develop an effective therapy. Herein, the Hippo pathway is specifically identified using an RNA-seq analysis in mild damaged skin specimens of patients with FICRD. Furthermore, specific increase of the Yes-associated protein (YAP1), an effector of the Hippo pathway, in skin region with mild damage plays a protective role for keratinocytes via positively regulating the numerous downstream genes involved in different biological processes. Interestingly, irradiated-keratinocytes inhibit activation of fibroblasts under TGF-β1 treatment via remote control by an exosome containing YAP1. More importantly, targeting one of YAP1 downstream genes, nuclear receptor subfamily 3 group C member 1 (NR3C1), which encodes glucocorticoid receptor, has revealed its therapeutic potential to treat FICRD by inhibiting fibroblasts activation in vitro and preventing formation of radiation ulcers in a mouse model and in patients with FICRD. Taken together, this translational research demonstrates the critical role of YAP1 in FICRD and identification of a feasible, effective therapy for patients with FICRD.
