Recent trends show that Internet traffic is increasingly dominated by content, which is accompanied by the exponential growth of traffic. To cope with this phenomena, network caching is introduced to ...utilize the storage capacity of diverse network devices. In this paper, we first summarize four basic caching placement strategies, i.e., local caching, Device-to-Device (D2D) caching, Small cell Base Station (SBS) caching and Macrocell Base Station (MBS) caching. However, studies show that so far, much of the research has ignored the impact of user mobility. Therefore, taking the effect of the user mobility into consideration, we proposes a joint mobility-aware caching and SBS density placement scheme (MS caching). In addition, differences and relationships between caching and computation offloading are discussed. We present a design of a hybrid computation offloading and support it with experimental results, which demonstrate improved performance in terms of energy cost. Finally, we discuss the design of an incentive mechanism by considering network dynamics, differentiated user's quality of experience (QoE) and the heterogeneity of mobile terminals in terms of caching and computing capabilities.
This paper presents results of a user study of the effects of virtual reality technology on VR Sickness and User Experience. In our study the participants watched two different panoramic (360) ...videos, one with relaxing content (beach clip) and second one with action content (roller coaster video clip). Videos were watched on four different head mounted displays (HMDs) and on the 2D television as a reference display. To assess VR Sickness discomfort levels, we have used the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ), and for user experience the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) was used. For quick assessments of VR Sickness discomfort levels, we have also used Subjective Units of Distress Scale (SUDS). We have found a strong correlation between SUDS and total SSQ score and between total SSQ score and SSQ-D score. Shown negative correlation between VR Sickness discomfort levels (assessed by SSQ and UEQ Questionnaire), and user experience (assessed by UEQ Questionnaire), indicates that presence of VR Sickness symptoms affects the user experience.

Putting glass doors on the display cases of refrigerators is one of the most efficient ways to reduce the energy consumption of supermarkets. However, the glass fogs up when opening the door because ...of the difference in air temperature inside and outside of the refrigerator, thereby obscuring the view. To defog the glass, anti-sweat heaters (ASHs) are used. In this paper, the power usage of ASHs according to changes in the dew point (DP) inside a supermarket were evaluated for two types of ASH, i.e., the door-frame ASH and the glass ASH. The evaluation was based on measurements of the condensation on the glass doors of vertical display cases, used for the preservation of frozen foodstuffs. A mathematical model of the correlation between the ASH’s power usage and the DP was developed and used for predicting the long-term energy savings. The savings were calculated based on the measured DPs inside the supermarket, which were extrapolated over a longer time period based on their correlation with the outside DPs. Regulating the door-frame ASH according to the DP resulted in an 84.6% reduction in energy consumption and a 90.1% reduction in the case of the glass ASH, compared to the current state. The correlation between the DPs inside and outside the supermarket served as a basis for the proposed implementation of the power usage regulation of the ASH according to the DP.
VR sickness (Cybersickness) presents an important challenge in virtual reality environments. We present the results of a study on the effects of VR technology and VR video content type on VR sickness ...and on autonomous nervous system of the user. The participants watched two omnidirectional (360°) videos of different content types (neutral and action) on five distinct video display types (2D TV screen, three generations of Oculus Rift VR HMDs and on the mobile Samsung GearVR HMD). The Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ) in combination with the measurement of the physiological parameters (skin conductance and skin temperature, respiratory frequency and heart rate) were used to monitor the participants’ physiology. The results show that video content significantly affects the SSQ grading and the skin conductance level. VR sickness effects were significantly reported less often with TV display type than with other VR HMDs.
With the advent of the Internet of Everything, people can easily interact with their environments immersively. The idea of pervasive computing is becoming a reality, but due to the inconvenience of ...carrying silicon-based entities and a lack of fine-grained sensing capabilities for human-computer interaction, it is difficult to ensure comfort, esthetics, and privacy in smart spaces. Motivated by the rapid developments in intelligent fabric technology in the post-Moore era, we propose a novel computing approach that creates a paradigm shift driven by fabric computing and advocate a new concept of non-chip sensing in living spaces. We discuss the core notion and benefits of fabric computing, including its implementation, challenges, and future research opportunities.

While p-n junction solar cells have long been established as the dominant solar-cell technology in the market, the origin of the charge-carrier separation in these devices remains open to debate. It ...is often attributed to the built-in electric field that exists across the junction in thermodynamic equilibrium, although this interpretation can lead to physical inconsistencies. In this work we present an interpretation approach based on the analogy between a solar cell and a generalized electric source model. Our interpretation is given through a detailed analysis of the electric potential and the non-electric chemical potential across each device, which are plotted together in complete potential diagrams introduced for this purpose. We demonstrate that the driving force separating the free charge carriers in both devices originates from the change of the non-electric chemical voltage that happens once the device is brought out of thermodynamic equilibrium. This change, therefore, can be interpreted as the driving force that triggers the selective motion of charge carriers and, thus, induces the electric voltage at the terminals of the device.

Therefore, it is a great challenge to develop smart communications and networks that support optimized management, dynamic configuration, and feasible services.
With the rapid development of medical and computer technologies, the healthcare system has seen a surge of interest from both the academia and industry. However, most healthcare systems fail to ...consider the emergency situations of patients, and are unable to provide a personalized resource service for special users. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose the Edge-Cognitive-Computing-based (ECC-based) smart-healthcare system. This system is able to monitor and analyze the physical health of users using cognitive computing. It also adjusts the computing resource allocation of the whole edge computing network comprehensively according to the health-risk grade of each user. The experiments show that the ECC-based healthcare system provides a better user experience and optimizes the computing resources reasonably, as well as significantly improving in the survival rates of patients in a sudden emergency.

To fully realize future autonomous driving scenarios, Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has attracted wide attention from both academia and industry. However, suitable cost and stable connectivity cannot be ...strongly guaranteed by existing architectures such as cellular networks, vehicular ad hoc networks, etc. With the prosperous development of artificial intelligence, cloud/edge computing and 5G network slicing, a more intelligent vehicular network is under deliberation. In this paper, an innovative paradigm called Cognitive Internet of Vehicles (CIoV) is proposed to help address the aforementioned challenge. Different from existing works, which mainly focus on communication technologies, CIoV enhances transportation safety and network security by mining effective information from both physical and network data space. We first present an overview of CIoV including its evolution, related technologies, and architecture. Then we highlight crucial cognitive design issues from three perspectives, namely, intra-vehicle network, inter-vehicle network and beyond-vehicle network. Simulations are then conducted to prove the effect of CIoV and finally some open issues will be further discussed. Our study explores this novel architecture of CIoV, as well as research opportunities in vehicular network.
With the explosion of big data technology, healthcare data is continuously and rapidly growing, with abundant and various values. There are wide varieties of data and heterogeneous healthcare data ...(images, text, video, raw sensor data, etc.) that are generated and required to be effectively stored, processed, queried, indexed and analyzed. These datasets differ widely in their volume, variety, velocity and value, including patient-oriented data such as electronic medical records (EMR), public-oriented data such as public health data, and knowledge-oriented data such as drug-to-drug, drug-to-disease, and disease-to-disease interaction registries. Big data in healthcare brings great challenges but plays an important role in healthcare transformation. The traditional techniques do not compromise end-users' Quality of Service (QoS) in terms of data availability, data response delay, etc. It is urgent to develop software tools and techniques that support rapid query processing and speed-up data analytics, which provide awareness and knowledge in real-time.
