Abstract
We present a study of timing properties of the accreting pulsar 2S 1417-624 observed during its 2018 outburst, based on Swift/BAT, Fermi/GBM, Insight-HXMT and NICER observations. We report a ...dramatic change of the pulse profiles with luminosity. The morphology of the profile in the range 0.2-10.0 keV switches from double to triple peaks at ∼2.5 $\rm \times 10^{37}{\it D}_{10}^2\ erg\ s^{-1}$ and from triple to quadruple peaks at ∼7 $\rm \times 10^{37}{\it D}_{10}^2\ erg\ s^{-1}$. The profile at high energies (25-100 keV) shows significant evolutions as well. We explain this phenomenon according to existing theoretical models. We argue that the first change is related to the transition from the sub to the super-critical accretion regime, while the second to the transition of the accretion disc from the gas-dominated to the radiation pressure-dominated state. Considering the spin-up as well due to the accretion torque, this interpretation allows to estimate the magnetic field self-consistently at ∼7 × 1012 G.
An ultrafine-grained surface layer of a pure Mg sheet was fabricated by sliding friction treatment. The grain size of the surface for the treated sample was reduced to 300 nm from 50 μm for the ...as-received counterpart. The ultrafine-grained pure Mg shows significantly enhanced corrosion resistance compared to its coarse-grained counterpart, representing a lower mass loss, a higher polarization resistance and a smaller hydrogen volume, mainly attributed to the relatively compacted film formed on the sample surface.
Experimental and numerical studies were performed in this paper to study the possibility of utilizing air curtain for confinement of fire-induced smoke and carbon monoxide transportation along ...channels. Bench scale experiments were preliminarily performed in a 3.6
m long model channel. Complementary computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was carried out by Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) for an 88
m long full scale channel, in order to see the longitudinal carbon monoxide concentration distribution along the real channel with air curtain discharged. Results showed that both the smoke and CO gases released by the fire were well confined to almost remain in the near fire region of the channel at one side of the air curtain. The gas temperature and CO concentration in the protection zone at the other side reduced significantly by an exponential trend with the increase of discharge velocity of the air curtain. These indicated that the air curtain can be an effective measure for confining the transportation of smoke and carbon monoxide species in long channel fires.
We present measurements of the differential cross sections of inclusive J/ψ meson production as a function of transverse momentum (pTJ/ψ) using the μ+μ− and e+e− decay channels in proton+proton ...collisions at center-of-mass energies of 510 and 500 GeV, respectively, recorded by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The measurement from the μ+μ− channel is for 0<pTJ/ψ<9 GeV/c and rapidity range |yJ/ψ|<0.4, and that from the e+e− channel is for 4<pTJ/ψ<20 GeV/c and |yJ/ψ|<1.0. The ψ(2S) to J/ψ ratio is also measured for 4<pTmeson<12 GeV/c through the e+e− decay channel. Model calculations, which incorporate different approaches toward the J/ψ production mechanism, are compared with experimental results and show reasonable agreement within uncertainties.
Isobutyrate supplements could improve rumen development by increasing ruminal fermentation products, especially butyrate, and then promote the growth performance of calves. The objective of this ...study was to evaluate the effects of isobutyrate supplementation on growth performance, rumen development, blood metabolites and hormone secretion in pre- and post-weaned dairy calves. In total, 56 Chinese Holstein male calves with 30 days of age and 72.9±1.43 kg of BW, blocked by days of age and BW, were assigned to four groups in a randomized block design. The treatments were as follows: control, low-isobutyrate, moderate-isobutyrate and high-isobutyrate with 0, 0.03, 0.06 and 0.09 g isobutyrate/kg BW per calf per day, respectively. Supplemental isobutyrate was hand-mixed into milk of pre-weaned calves and the concentrate portion of post-weaned calves. The study consisted of 10 days of an adaptation period and a 50-day sampling period. Calves were weaned at 60 days of age. Seven calves were chosen from each treatment at random and slaughtered at 45 and 90 days of age. BW, dry matter (DM) intake and stomach weight were measured, samples of ruminal tissues and blood were determined. For pre- and post-weaned calves, DM intake and average daily gain increased linearly (P<0.05), but feed conversion ratio decreased linearly (P<0.05) with increasing isobutyrate supplementation. Total stomach weight and the ratio of rumen weight to total stomach weight tended to increase (P=0.073) for pre-weaned calves and increased linearly (P=0.021) for post-weaned calves, whereas the ratio of abomasum weight to total stomach weight was not affected for pre-weaned calves and decreased linearly (P<0.05) for post-weaned calves with increasing isobutyrate supplementation. Both length and width of rumen papillae tended to increase linearly for pre-weaned calves, but increased linearly (P<0.05) for post-weaned calves with increasing isobutyrate supplementation. The relative expression of messenger RNA for growth hormone (GH) receptor and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA synthase 1 in rumen mucosa increased linearly (P<0.05) for pre- and post-weaned calves with increasing isobutyrate supplementation. Blood concentrations of glucose, acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate, GH and IGF-1 increased linearly (P<0.05) for pre- and post-weaned calves, whereas blood concentration of insulin decreased linearly with increasing isobutyrate supplementation. The present results indicated that isobutyrate promoted growth of calves by improving rumen development and its ketogenesis in a dose-dependent manner.
The first (v_{1}^{fluc}), second (v_{2}), and third (v_{3}) harmonic coefficients of the azimuthal particle distribution at midrapidity are extracted for charged hadrons and studied as a function of ...transverse momentum (p_{T}) and mean charged particle multiplicity density ⟨N_{ch}⟩ in U+U (sqrts_{NN}=193 GeV), Au+Au, Cu+Au, Cu+Cu, d+Au, and p+Au collisions at sqrts_{NN}=200 GeV with the STAR detector. For the same ⟨N_{ch}⟩, the v_{1}^{fluc} and v_{3} coefficients are observed to be independent of the collision system, while v_{2} exhibits such a scaling only when normalized by the initial-state eccentricity (ϵ_{2}). The data also show that ln(v_{2}/ϵ_{2}) scales linearly with ⟨N_{ch}⟩^{-1/3}. These measurements provide insight into initial-geometry fluctuations and the role of viscous hydrodynamic attenuation on v_{n} from small to large collision systems.
We report on new measurements of inclusive J / ψ polarization at midrapidity in p + p collisions at √s = 200 GeV by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The polarization ...parameters, λθ, λϕ, and λθϕ, are measured as a function of transverse momentum ( pT ) in both the helicity and Collins-Soper (CS) reference frames within pT < 10 GeV / c. Except for λθ in the CS frame at the highest measured pT, all three polarization parameters are consistent with 0 in both reference frames without any strong pT dependence. Several model calculations are compared with data, and the one using the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory coupled with nonrelativistic QCD gives the best overall description of the experimental results, even though other models cannot be ruled out due to experimental uncertainties.
The longitudinal spin transfer DLL to Λ and Λ hyperons produced in high-energy polarized proton-proton collisions is expected to be sensitive to the helicity distribution functions of strange quarks ...and antiquarks of the proton, and to longitudinally polarized fragmentation functions. We report an improved measurement of DLL from data obtained at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 200 GeV with the STAR detector at RHIC. The data have an approximately twelve times larger figure of merit than prior results and cover |η| < 1.2 in pseudorapidity with transverse momenta pT up to 6 GeV / c. In the forward scattering hemisphere at largest pT, the longitudinal spin transfer is found to be DLL = −0.036 ± 0.048 (stat) ± 0.013 (sys) for Λ hyperons and DLL = 0.032 ± 0.043 (stat) ± 0.013 ( sys ) for Λ antihyperons. The dependences on η and pT are presented and compared with model evaluations.
