Sport management is one of the fastest growing disciplines on college campuses nationwide. Its multifaceted nature suggests that it has a unique blend of students with broad ranging interests. To ...ensure student success, it is important to understand faculty attitudes toward students. There are two predominant attitudes toward students that occur along a spectrum: conservative-autocratic and liberal-democratic. The conservative-autocratic attitude is characterized by traditional classroom authority, class discipline, and placing little emphasis in the encouragement of autonomy within their students. Liberal-democratic attitudes are characterized by the belief that students should be treated as individuals and can be self-directed in their learning. Liberal-democratic attitudes have been positively correlated with the academic success of students. Utilizing Ng’s (2002) Teachers’ Attitudes Toward Students scale (TATS) scale and informed by McGregor’s (1960) X and Y managerial models of motivation, this study explored sport management faculty attitudes toward students. This study used a mixed methods approach, and 166 sport management faculty members participated in this study. Although the results indicate that the participants prefer adopting liberal-democratic approach in their teaching, older faculty members and tenure-track faculty members were significantly more likely to exhibit conservativeautocratic attitudes toward students. As such, faculty members need to be aware that some circumstances may impact teaching effectiveness and directly influence student outcomes.
Drawing upon 217 in-depth interviews and the concept of the "social imaginary," we introduce the "abortion imaginary"-a set of shared understandings regarding abortion and abortion patients. We ...identify four interrelated facets of the U.S. abortion imaginary pertaining to who gets an abortion and why: maternal inevitability, economic decision-making, relationship precarity, and emotional fragility. We then show how shared perceptions of abortion patients diverge into polarized opinions, revealing how those who know someone who has had an abortion differ from those who do not. Centering personal "exemplars," we integrate conceptual work on social imaginaries with contact theory to illuminate how divergent opinions coexist with shared cultural understandings.
At room temperature, the vapor pressures of desflurane, isoflurane, and sevoflurane are well above the clinically useful range. We hypothesized that therapeutic concentrations of these agents could ...be achieved at temperatures below 0°C, but the vapor pressure-temperature relationship is unknown below 0. Second, we hypothesized that this relationship could be exploited to deliver therapeutic-range concentrations of anesthetic vapor. We therefore set out to determine the low temperature-vapor pressure relationships of each anesthetic agent, thereby identifying the saturated vapor concentration of each agent at any temperature below 0°C. To test our hypothesis, we measured the saturated vapor concentration at 1 atm of pressure for temperatures between -60 and 0°C, thus developing an empiric relationship for each agent. There was consistency in repeated experiments for all 3 agents. To test the empiric data, we constructed a digitally controlled thermoelectric anesthetic vaporizer, characterized the device, and used it to deliver anesthetic vapor to laboratory mice. We report, for the first time, the temperature-vapor pressure relationship at temperatures below 0°C for desflurane, isoflurane, and sevoflurane as well as the TMAC of these agents: the temperature at which the vapor pressure is equal to the minimum alveolar concentration. We describe the construction and limited validation of an anesthetic vaporizer prototype on the basis of this principle. We conclude that clinically relevant concentrations of volatile anesthetics may be achieved at low temperatures.
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of football on student-athletes with education-impacting disabilities. Nine football student-athletes diagnosed with education-impacting ...disabilities at one NCAA Division I institution participated in this study. Data from the semi-structured interviews revealed three themes: focus development, maturity development, and self-improvement. Overall, the data divulged that playing football allowed the participants to focus, clear their minds, become mentally strong, and develop a resilient work ethic. The participants also credited the sport for becoming better men.
Suture ligation of blood vessels during surgery can be time-consuming and skill-intensive. Energy-based, electrosurgical, and ultrasonic devices have recently replaced the use of sutures and ...mechanical clips (which leave foreign objects in the body) for many surgical procedures, providing rapid hemostasis during surgery. However, these devices have the potential to create an undesirably large collateral zone of thermal damage and tissue necrosis. We explore an alternative energy-based technology, infrared lasers, for rapid and precise thermal coagulation and fusion of the blood vessel walls. Seven near-infrared lasers (808, 980, 1075, 1470, 1550, 1850 to 1880, and 1908 nm) were tested during preliminary tissue studies. Studies were performed using fresh porcine renal vessels, ex vivo, with native diameters of 1 to 6 mm, and vessel walls flattened to a total thickness of 0.4 mm. A linear beam profile was applied normal to the vessel for narrow, full-width thermal coagulation. The laser irradiation time was 5 s. Vessel burst pressure measurements were used to determine seal strength. The 1470 nm laser wavelength demonstrated the capability of sealing a wide range of blood vessels from 1 to 6 mm diameter with burst strengths of 578±154, 530±171, and 426±174 mmHg for small, medium, and large vessel diameters, respectively. Lateral thermal coagulation zones (including the seal) measured 1.0±0.4 mm on vessels sealed at this wavelength. Other laser wavelengths (1550, 1850 to 1880, and 1908 nm) were also capable of sealing vessels, but were limited by lower vessel seal pressures, excessive charring, and/or limited power output preventing treatment of large vessels (>4 mm outer diameter).
Abstract
Objective: To estimate whether cervical length measured by transvaginal ultrasonography in women with a history of hysteroscopic uterine septum resection predicts spontaneous preterm birth ...<35 weeks' gestation.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study compared women who had undergone hysteroscopic metroplasty, and were subsequently pregnant with singleton gestations delivered January 2003 to December 2012, to a low-risk control group. Transvaginal ultrasonographic cervical lengths were measured 16-30 weeks' gestation. The primary outcome was spontaneous preterm birth <35 weeks' gestation and the primary exposure variable of interest was cervical length.
Results: Women with a uterine septum resected (N = 24) had a shorter cervical length (2.90 cm) than the low-risk control group (N = 141, 4.31 cm, p < 0.0001); and were more likely to have a cervical length <3.0 cm (41.7% versus 1.4%, p < 0.0001), <2.5 cm (33.3% versus 0%, p < 0.0001), <2.0 cm (16.7% versus 0%, p < 0.0001) and <1.5 cm (12.5% versus 0%, p = 0.003). Women with septum resected were more likely to receive corticosteroids (33.3% versus 11.3%, p = 0.010), but were not more likely to have a spontaneous preterm birth <35 weeks (4.2% versus 0.7%, p = 0.27). There were no differences noted in secondary outcomes including neonatal morbidity.
Conclusion: Pregnant women with a history of a hysteroscopic uterine septum resection have shorter cervical lengths than low-risk controls but may not be at a higher risk of spontaneous preterm birth <35 weeks' gestation. Further research with a larger sample size is needed to evaluate this group of women to determine if transvaginal ultrasonographic cervical length assessment is of benefit.
To determine if the use of oral misoprostol in premenopausal women undergoing diagnostic hysteroscopy produces a clinically important difference in pre-procedural cervical dilatation.
At a tertiary ...care hospital, premenopausal women undergoing diagnostic hysteroscopy were randomized to receive either 400 microg of misoprostol or a vitamin B6 placebo orally 12 hours before the procedure. Patients were stratified on the basis of parity. The primary outcome was the pre-procedural dilatation of the cervix. Secondary outcomes included the need to further dilate the cervix, the time required to further dilate the cervix, and side effects.
Sixty-four women (11 nulliparous and 53 parous) undergoing diagnostic hysteroscopy consented to participate in the study. Thirty-three women received misoprostol and 31 received placebo. Baseline demographics showed no difference in age and parity between the two groups. There were no significant differences in pre-procedural dilatation (5.0 mm vs. 4.7 mm, P = 0.52), need to further dilate the cervix (56.7% vs. 63.0%, P = 0.63), and time required to further dilate the cervix (12.7 seconds vs. 25.7 seconds, P = 0.27). Significantly more women in the misoprostol group experienced menstrual-like cramping (24.2% vs. 3.3%, P = 0.03) and vaginal spotting (21.2% vs. 3.3%, P = 0.05).
In premenopausal women, there is no improvement in pre-procedural cervical dilatation with administration of oral misoprostol 12 hours before diagnostic hysteroscopy. Further research is required in both nulliparous and parous premenopausal women to determine whether oral misoprostol improves cervical dilatation and, if so, the ideal dose, route and timing.
