The implementation of lean principles and approaches is gaining grounds in the construction industry globally. However, there is no clear understanding of the number and categories of lean practices ...implemented and the benefits associated with it in the planning, design and construction of building and infrastructure projects. This paper relied on a systematic review of published literature in Scopus, Science Direct and Google Scholar to identify and categorize the different lean practices implemented in the construction industry and the benefits derivable from them. Totally, 102 documents published between 1996 and 2018 were reviewed and their contents analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. A total of 32 different lean practices categorised into design and engineering; planning and control; construction and site management; and health and safety management were identified. The review also found that the last planner system and just-in-time were the top two most implemented lean practices and about 20 different economic, social and environmental benefits were linked to the implementation of lean practices in the construction industry. This review is instructive that lean practices have good prospects for enhancing the productivity of the construction industry and achieving sustainable built environment, but a critical mass uptake and sustained implementation are required to attain these goals.
Digital technologies are increasingly being used to support the execution of all aspects of the construction procurement process. However, there has been no systematic attempt to identify and ...catalogue the different digital technologies and tools available for executing construction procurement activities so as to guide those involved in procurement on the options available to support the six basic procurement activities identified in ISO 10845. The method used to identify 36 different digital technologies and tools used in construction procurement was a literature survey involving systematic identification and review of 78 articles published in 52 different sources between 1993 and 2014. The 36 digital technologies and tools identified include ten generic tools used across the procurement process. This is followed by four applications for establishing what is to be procured; four for soliciting tender offers; one for establishment of procurement strategy; two for tender evaluation, two for award of contract and thirteen for contract administration. The research shows that the majority of existing digital technologies are web-based applications that facilitate real-time communication and collaboration across construction supply chains. The effort made to map digital technologies with the ISO 10845 framework presents a useful contribution to current discourse on digital technology use in construction procurement. It seems interesting that despite the progress made in the evolution and use of digital technologies in construction, there is still no single digital technology which integrates all six construction procurement activities into a system that procurers can adopt to manage the entire construction procurement lifecycle. This should be addressed.
•The study sought to identify digital technologies used in construction procurement.•A systematic review of 78 articles from 52 different sources was undertaken.•Most of the thirty-six digital technologies identified are web-based applications.•The technologies were mapped with the six procurement activities in ISO 10845.•Interoperability and security issues related to these technologies were discussed.
This study investigated residential satisfaction of randomly selected 156 household heads in the OGD Workers' housing estate in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. Data were collected through ...questionnaire survey and analysed using descriptive statistics, factor and categorical regression analyses. Respondents were generally satisfied with their housing conditions with 59 % of them expressing satisfaction, while 41 % were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with their housing environment. They evaluated satisfaction based on four key dimensions of housing unit characteristics, neighbourhood facilities and environment, management and services; and these residential components contributed the most to predicting residential satisfaction. Respondents' educational background, employment sector, sex and age were also found to be predictors of satisfaction. A key implication of the findings is that Core housing can provide satisfactory living environment, and this can be enhanced through the adoption of good housing design and management practices, improved access to basic services and social infrastructure and rapid upgrading of the number of bedrooms in the housing units.
•Subjective life satisfaction in public housing in urban areas of Ogun State, Nigeria was assessed.•A majority of the respondents were satisfied with life in their current residences.•Tenure, income ...and marital status and housing satisfaction influenced subjective life satisfaction significantly.•Subjective life satisfaction in public housing can be enhanced by improving housing satisfaction.
This study investigated subjective life satisfaction of 452 residents in 10 newly constructed public housing estates in urban areas of Ogun State Southwest Nigeria. Data were collected using structured questionnaire and subjected to descriptive statistics, factor and multivariate regression analyses. The result shows that 61% of the respondents were generally satisfied with life in their current residences. A larger proportion of them were also found to be satisfied with the physical and spatial characteristics of the dwelling unit components of their housing environment but were dissatisfied with access to housing services and infrastructural facilities. Tenure, income and marital status as well as satisfaction with the size of residence, housing services and management of the housing estates and housing delivery strategy were among the strongest predictors of subjective life satisfaction among the respondents. This implies that among other factors, satisfaction with housing environment as well as housing delivery strategy have a significant influence on residents’ satisfaction with life in public housing. Therefore, public housing developers need to take adequate steps to improve residents’ satisfaction with the size of main activity areas in dwelling units, housing services and management of housing estates and encourage the participation of users in housing delivery process in order to enhance the subjective life satisfaction of residents of public housing in urban areas in Nigeria.
The plight of residents in inner-city slums in the global South has continued to receive research attention. However, there is a paucity of empirical studies on the influence of the living conditions ...of this category of residents on attachment to their home environment in urban areas in Nigeria. This study investigated place attachment in the inner-city Ibadan, Nigeria, using data derived from household survey of 856 residents in Oke-Foko Community. The findings of the descriptive statistics, factor, and multiple regression analyses revealed that around 63% of the respondents were attached to their home environment and place dependence contributed more than place identity to this. In addition, satisfaction with housing units features and support services, security and tenure status of the respondents emerged as the top four predictors of place attachment in the area. The study implies that improved place attachment and by extension active citizenship behaviours by residents of urban slums in Nigeria and other countries in sub-Saharan Africa can be achieved if appropriate strategies are engaged to enhance the quality of their housing units, level of security of lives and property, and improve their access to basic social services and facilities within their home environment.

Although gender mainstreaming in science, engineering, and technology education has continued to receive research attention, not much has been done in architecture. This study investigated the ...interaction patterns in architectural design studios and classrooms in the Nigerian university context to suggest how gender mainstreaming can be achieved in architecture education. Twelve Architecture Lecturers and 837 students drawn from three universities in Southern Nigeria were involved in this research. The data were collected via studio and classroom observations using a modified Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories and questionnaire and analysed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, and Scheffe’s pairwise comparison. The results revealed that the competitive pre-dominated the cooperative interaction pattern but the female group was better in the cooperative pattern than the male group who did better with the competitive pattern. Gender was identified as the main factor influencing the predominant interaction pattern in architectural design studios and lecture rooms investigated. The study implies that for a successful gender mainstreaming in architectural education, effective integration of both the cooperative and competitive interaction patterns with the former dominating over the latter is required in architecture studios and lecture rooms in Nigeria and other countries with similar experiences.
Neighbourhood satisfaction in nine public housing estates was investigated using data derived from household surveys involving 517 respondents in urban areas of Ogun State, Nigeria. The study was ...conducted between December 2009 and February 2010; and the data were derived using structured questionnaire and subjected to descriptive statistical, factor and multivariate regression analyses. The result reveals that the respondents were generally dissatisfied with neighbourhood environment in the housing estates; and the main source of dissatisfaction was poor access to services and infrastructure. Satisfaction with services and infrastructure; socio-economic environment; security; and levels of noise and privacy in the housing estates as well as marital, employment and tenure status of the respondents emerged as the predictors of neighbourhood satisfaction. Therefore, to improve neighbourhood satisfaction and the quality of life residents in public housing; urban planners, housing developers and managers must engage in innovative planning, design and management strategies that ensure residents’ satisfaction with these key neighbourhood features.
The use of electronic (e-) procurement to support the execution of supply chain management activities in the different industrial sectors is permeating all regions of the world. However, in countries ...in sub-Saharan Africa where there is a significant level of corruption and unethical practices in the procurement process, there is a need for a better understanding of how e-Procurement can help to check the incidence of corrupt and unethical practices in construction project delivery. This study relied on a cross-sectional survey of 759 respondents, including architects, builders, engineers, estate/facilities managers, contractors, construction/ project managers, quantity surveyors, supply chain managers and others to identify and analyse the anti-corruption capabilities of e-Procurement in construction project delivery in Nigeria. The results of the descriptive statistics, relative importance index and principal components analysis identified 18 anti-corruption capabilities in e-Procurement in construction project delivery with the three most important ones being the capability of e-Procurement to ensure good inventory management/record keeping; accountability by providing audit services trail and minimise direct human contacts during bidding. The key underlying dimensions of these capabilities include the advantage of e-Procurement over the traditional paper-based method; transparent bidding process and increase in competition in construction project delivery process. The findings of this study have implications, especially, on the use of e-Procurement to curb corruption in construction procurement activities.
Purpose - The general aim of this research is to investigate residents' perception of the quality of public housing and factors influencing this in Ogun State Southwest Nigeria. This is in view of a ...paucity of published works on this subject matter and the need to upgrade the quality of public housing in urban areas in Nigeria.Design methodology approach - Data for the study were collected through a cross sectional survey of proportionately selected 517 household heads in newly constructed public housing estates, and 90 staff members of four key public housing agencies in urban areas of Ogun State, Nigeria. Structured questionnaires were used in the collection of primary data. Descriptive statistics and categorical regression analysis were used in data analysis.Findings - The results show that a majority of the respondents rated their current residential environment low on the quality scale. Whereas housing unit attributes were rated highest, neighbourhood facilities were rated very low on the housing quality scale. Housing delivery strategies, spatial deficiencies in housing units, organizational capacity of housing providers, age, income, education and tenure status of residents were found to be among the key factors influencing residents' perception of housing quality in the study area.Research limitations implications - The survey was concentrated on newly constructed public housing by Ogun State government in selected urban areas. Other studies can examine housing constructed by the Federal Government of Nigeria in the study area.Practical implications - Lack of access to housing services, infrastructure and neighborhood facilities accounts for poor quality of public housing in the study area. This can be improved through adequate provision of basic social amenities, organizational capacity building and adoption of appropriate housing delivery strategies by public housing providers.Originality value - A framework for studying the quality of public housing in Nigeria and other countries has been developed. The findings can assist public housing policy makers and programme managers to improve on the quality of public housing and services.
This research investigated how exposure to moisture influences the biodeterioration of facade finishes in the hot-humid tropics of Enugu metropolis, Southeast Nigeria. Physical observations and ...experimental research strategy were used to collect data from 383 buildings in the study area. The data were analysed using descriptive and logistic regression analyses. The results showed that 53.5% were residential buildings and 88.5% had cementitious façade finishes with 66.8% of them having their façade finishes exposed to moisture. Further, 64% of the facade finishes, mainly of cementitious materials and paints were colonized by microorganisms with the most common microbes being fungi. Façade finishes exposed to moisture we found to be four times more likely to experience biodeterioration. The study concludes that in order to curb microbial colonization of façade finishes and the attendant adverse effects, architects should engage in design strategies that can minimize the level of exposure of façade finishes to moisture.
