This chapter of the report of the “Flavor in the era of the LHC” Workshop discusses the theoretical, phenomenological and experimental issues related to flavor phenomena in the charged lepton sector ...and in flavor conserving CP-violating processes. We review the current experimental limits and the main theoretical models for the flavor structure of fundamental particles. We analyze the phenomenological consequences of the available data, setting constraints on explicit models beyond the standard model, presenting benchmarks for the discovery potential of forthcoming measurements both at the LHC and at low energy, and exploring options for possible future experiments.
Early in the operation of the SLD CCD vertex detector (VXD3) at the SLC, radiation damage to the CCDs was observed. It is well known that low-energy light particles (electrons and photons) are a few ...orders of magnitude less effective than heavy particles (neutrons or heavy charged particles) in the generation of radiation damage effects in silicon. The SLD environment was known to be dominated by electrons and photons with a small fraction of neutrons. The estimated radiation damage by these particles cannot account for the observed damage. Therefore, this damage is puzzling. A CCD-based detector is a leading option for vertex detection at the future linear collider (LC). A full understanding of background models in LCs and the associated damage is needed. Earlier results on neutron damage to an SLD CCD were reported at the 1999 IEEE NSS, and these new results complement our old results. In addition to tests on controlled exposures of individual CCDs, we have studied the nature of the traps produced in the SLD vertex detector to assess their origin-whether heavy or light particles.
Using the ARGUS detector at the
e

− storage ring DORIS II, we have searched for the real and imaginary part of the electric dipole formfactor
d
τ
of the
τ lepton in the production of
τ pairs at
q
...2=100
GeV
2
. This is the first direct measurement of this
CP
violating formfactor. We applied the method of optimised observables which takes into account all available information on the observed
τ decay products. No evidence for
CP
violation was found, and we derive the following results:

A Charge Coupled Devices (CCD)-based vertex detector is a leading option for vertex detection at the future linear collider. A major issue for this application is the radiation hardness of such ...devices. Tests of radiation hardness of CCDs used in the SLD vertex detector, VXD3, have been reported earlier. The first measurements of 1998 involved a spare VXD3 CCD that was irradiated with neutrons from a radioactive source (Pu–Be), and from a nuclear reactor. In 2003, we had the opportunity to disassemble the VXD3 detector and study the nature of the radiation damage it incurred during 3 years of operation at SLC. In the preparation for this study, additional experiments with the spare VXD3 CCD were performed. These included measurements of trapping times in neutron irradiated CCDs. Results, reported here, will help us better understand the mechanism of radiation damage effects and develop techniques to minimize performance degradation due to radiation damage.
The mid-rapidity (dσpN/dy at y=0) and total (σpN) production cross sections of Jψ mesons are measured in proton–nucleus interactions. Data collected by the HERA-B experiment in interactions of ...920 GeV/c protons with carbon, titanium and tungsten targets are used for this analysis. The Jψ mesons are reconstructed by their decay into lepton pairs. The total production cross section obtained is σpNJ/ψ=663±74±46 nb/nucleon. In addition, our result is compared with previous measurements.

ωω cross ...section has its maximum value close to threshold.
is a fixed target experiment working on the 920 GeV proton beam of the HERA accelerator at the DESY laboratory in Hamburg. During the last data taking period (2002-2003), about 150 million dilepton ...triggers, 220 million minimum bias events and 35 million hard photon triggers were acquired. These large statistics allow detailed studies on the production of charmonium states in proton-nucleus p-A collisions, which extend for the first time into the negative Feynman-x () region. Measurements of the inclusive , \(\Upsilon\) and open charm cross sections are also ongoing. After a brief discussion of the detector and of the data samples, we report on preliminary results obtained on these physics topics.
