High gradient low frequency RF cavities have been studied as an energy compressor for a short lived secondary particles with long bunch length. Although a ferro-magnetic loaded cavity can realize low ...resonant frequency in a reasonable cavity size, the high gradient requirement may not be compatible with it. This paper describes two types of high gradient air core (without ferro-magnetic load) cavities: simple but large (several meters) cavities and a set of high frequency (∼200MHz) cavities that synthesizes the low frequency component as a beat.
A permanent magnet quadrupole (PMQ) is one of the candidates for the final focus lens in a linear collider. An over 120 T/m strong variable permanent magnet quadrupole is achieved by the introduction ...of saturated iron and a 'double ring structure'. A fabricated PMQ achieved 24 T integrated gradient with phi20 mm bore diameter, phi100 mm magnet diameter and 20 cm pole length. The strength of the PMQ is adjustable in 1.4 T steps, due to its 'double ring structure': the PMQ is split into two nested rings; the outer ring is sliced along the beam line into four parts and is rotated to change the strength. This paper describes the variable PMQ from fabrication to recent adjustments
The number of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes is known to be related to outcomes in patients with a variety of malignancies. Interferon (IFN) gamma-inducible protein-10 (IP-10) and monokine induced by ...IFNgamma (MIG) have chemotactic effects on activated T lymphocytes and natural killer (NK) cells. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antitumor effects of exogenous expression of the MIG and IP-10 genes delivered to solid tumors by poly D,L-2,4-diaminobutyric acid (PDBA). The murine MIG and IP-10 genes were transfected into mouse neuroblastoma cells with PDBA. MIG and IP-10 levels in supernatants of transfected cells were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The chemotactic activities of MIG and IP-10 in the supernatants of cell cultures were measured by chemotaxis assay. Tumors were injected in vivo with PDBA/pmMIGColon, two colonsIP-10 complexes to evaluate the effects of these genes on tumor volume and survival time of mice. Transfected PDBA/pmMIGColon, two colonsIP-10 complexes produced MIG and IP-10 protein in vitro. MIG and IP-10 proteins secreted into the culture medium showed chemotactic activity. MIG and IP-10 gene therapy with the PDBA system in vivo significantly inhibited tumor growth and prolonged survival time of mice. In conclusion, PDBA-mediated MIG and IP-10 gene therapy may be useful for treatment of solid tumors.
A novel method to control a magnetic field distribution in a magnet is devised with use of inter-poles made of anisotropic magnet material. One can generate a gradient field in a constant gapped ...magnet with this technique; the effective length of the magnet can be constant, independent of the entrance position. Such a magnet can have not only constant gap but also smaller fringing field compared with a conventional one that controls its field distribution by changing the gap height
This paper presents a sensor network system consisting of distributed cameras and laser range finders for multiple objects tracking. Sensory information from cameras is processed by the level set ...method in real time and integrated with range data obtained by laser range finders in a probabilistic manner using novel SIR/MCMC combined particle filters. Though the conventional SIR particle filter is a popular technique for object tracking, it has been pointed out that the conventional particle filter has some disadvantages in practical applications such as its low tracking performance for multiple targets due to the degeneracy problem. In this paper, the new combined particle filters consisting of a low-resolution MCMC particle filter and a high-resolution SIR particle filter is proposed. Simultaneous tracking experiments for multiple moving targets are successfully carried out and it is verified that the combined particle filters has higher performance than the conventional particle filters in terms of the number of particles, the processing speed, and the tracking performance for multiple targets.
Single-port laparoscopic surgery usually uses the transumbilical approach. However, the transumbilical incision may be associated with a high frequency of wound-related complications, including ...trocar site hernia and infection. Therefore, we developed remote access laparoscopic (REAL) surgery, a new access technique for single-port surgery within the pubic hairline. This study reports on a technique developed at our institution and describes our preliminary results.
Ten patients with cholecystolithiasis underwent REAL surgery. A single 2.5-cm transverse incision was made medially within the pubic hairline area, and a SILS Port was inserted. A 5-mm flexible endoscope and an articulating grasper or a long laparoscopic grasper were used. Dissection of the gallbladder was achieved with laparoscopic ultrasonic shears just as in the conventional laparoscopic cholecystectomy. All procedures were successfully performed without conversion to conventional laparoscopic technique. There were no postoperative complications, and outpatient evaluation showed a clean scar within the pubic hair area in all patients.
Our early experience shows that REAL surgery is feasible and safe. This novel access technique can preserve the native umbilicus and provides an invisible scar that is concealed within the pubic hair.
The field strength generated by permanent magnets has been further extended by introduction of saturated iron. A permanent magnet quadrupole (PMQ) lens with such saturated iron is one of the ...candidates for the final focus lens for an e/sup +/e/sup -/ linear collider accelerator, because of its compactness and low power consumption. The first prototype of the PMQ has been fabricated and demonstrated to have an integrated strength of 28.5 T with an overall length of 10 cm and a 7 mm bore radius. Two drawbacks should be considered: its negative temperature coefficient of field strength and its fixed strength. A thermal compensation material is being tested to cure the first problem. The other problem may be solved by rotating sectioned magnet bricks, but that may lead to movement of the magnetic center and introduction of multipoles beyond some strict requirements.
