The object of this paper is to present certain important properties of the Gamma distribution and the two kinds of Beta distributions, and to indicate certain useful applications of these two to ...sampling problems. The distribution of the Studentised D2-statistic under the null hypothesis is obtained in two different ways.
With the object of investigating the fertility mores obtaining in Mysore State, the author has been working on a Pilot Project based on data relating to the Census of India 1941, supplemented by ...maternity statistics collected in recent yrs, but of limited scope. This paper reports the main results of a statistical analysis of the routine information recorded in the Parturition Register in respect of each expectant mother admitted to a particular maternity hospital in Mysore City during the calendar yr 1952, namely: date of admission, name, age, race or religion, number of yrs elapsed since marriage, present para (or the order of the present pregnancy), date of delivery of the child, sex of child, born alive or still-born, weight of child in pounds, length in inches, & circumference of head in inches. It is concluded that: (1) There is an excess of M births over F births, roughly in the ratio of 106 M's to 100 F's, (2) the mean/average number of children born to a mother is about 4, taking all mothers, that is, those with completed fertility as well as those with continuing fertility, (3) the R age of the mother at the birth of the first child lies between 19 & 20 yrs & is about 2 yrs less than that obtaining in other States in India, (4) a moderate delay in the commencement of the reproductive function in the human F merely shifts to the same extent the age of maximum reproductivity, while the span between the commencement & the zenith of fertility remains unaltered at about 8 to 10 yrs, & (5) the spacing of children, that is, the interval between 2 consecutive pregnancies is in the neighborhood of 2 yrs. The formula for the efficiency of the double sampling design is given in this note in terms of the population parameters and the conditions under which this design is more efficient than simple ...random sampling have been stated in algebraic form.
Abstract Background Genetic regulation of plasma lipids has been shown to influence the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). We analyzed the relationship between rs599839 and rs646776 single ...nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) present in the CELSR2–PSRC1–SORT1 gene cluster, candidate gene expression, and their association with CAD and circulating lipid levels in a representative cohort of Asian Indians selected from the Indian Atherosclerosis Research Study. Methods SNPs rs599839 and rs646776 were genotyped by Taqman assay in 1034 CAD patients (cases) and 1034 age- and gender-matched controls. Expression of CELSR2 , PSRC1 , and SORT1 genes was measured in 100 cases and 100 controls. Plasma levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-c) were measured by enzymatic assay. Results Both rs646776 and rs599839 were in strong linkage disequilibrium ( r = 0.98) and showed significant protective association with CAD (OR = 0.315, 95% CI 0.136–0.728, p < 0.007 and OR = 0.422, 95% CI 0.181–0.981, p = 0.045, respectively). Haplotype TA showed 72% frequency and was associated with CAD (OR 0.77, 95% CI 0.67–0.88, p = 0.0002). PSRC1 gene expression was lower in the cases than in the controls (0.75 ± 0.405 versus 1.04 ± 0.622, p = 2.26 × 10−4 ). The homozygous variant and heterozygous genotypes showed 30% and 15% higher PSRC1 expression, respectively. Correspondingly, the minor alleles were associated with lower plasma TC and LDL-c levels. Conclusion PSRC1 in the cholesterol gene cluster shows a significant association with CAD by virtue of the two SNPs, rs646776 and rs599839 that also regulate plasma cholesterol levels.
A high-contrast high-intensity petawatt-class Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification laser has been developed for research on high field science. A saturable absorber and a low-gain optical ...parametric chirped-pulse amplification preamplifier in the front-end have improved the temporal contrast in the system to ∼<inline-formula><tex-math>2 \times 10^{12}</tex-math></inline-formula> on the subnanosecond time scale at the ∼70 TW power level. In addition to the high-contrast broadband high-energy output from the final amplifier has been achieved with a flat-top spatial profile with a filling factor of ∼70%. This is the result of pump beam spatial profile homogenization with diffractive optical elements. The system produces the uncompressed output pulse energy of 29 J, indicating the capability for reaching a peak power of ∼600 TW. We discuss in detail the design, performance, and characterization of the laser including output power, pulse duration, and spatiotemporal beam quality. We also describe the on-going upgrade of the laser system and some applications for the laser in relativistic dominated laser-matter interactions.
