ABSTRACT
We report here on initial results from the Thousand-Pulsar-Array (TPA) programme, part of the Large Survey Project ‘MeerTime’ on the MeerKAT telescope. The interferometer is used in the ...tied-array mode in the band from 856 to 1712 MHz, and the wide band coupled with the large collecting area and low receiver temperature make it an excellent telescope for the study of radio pulsars. The TPA is a 5 year project, which aims at to observing (a) more than 1000 pulsars to obtain high-fidelity pulse profiles, (b) some 500 of these pulsars over multiple epochs, and (c) long sequences of single-pulse trains from several hundred pulsars. The scientific outcomes from the programme will include the determination of pulsar geometries, the location of the radio emission within the pulsar magnetosphere, the connection between the magnetosphere and the crust and core of the star, tighter constraints on the nature of the radio emission itself, as well as interstellar medium studies. First, results presented here include updated dispersion measures, 26 pulsars with Faraday rotation measures derived for the first time, and a description of interesting emission phenomena observed thus far.
Several genomic methods were applied for predicting shell quality traits recorded at 4 different hen ages in a White Leghorn line. The accuracies of genomic prediction of single-step GBLUP and ...single-trait Bayes B were compared with predictions of breeding values based on pedigree-BLUP under single-trait or multitrait models. Breaking strength (BS) and dynamic stiffness (Kdyn) measurements were collected on 18,524 birds from 3 consecutive generations, of which 4,164 animals also had genotypes from an Affymetrix 50K panel containing 49,591 SNPs after quality control edits. All traits had low to moderate heritability, ranging from 0.17 for BS to 0.34 for Kdyn. The highest accuracies of prediction were obtained for the multitrait single-step model. The use of marker information resulted in higher prediction accuracies than pedigree-based models for almost all traits. A genome-wide association study based on a Bayes B model was conducted to detect regions explaining the largest proportion of genetic variance. Across all 8 shell quality traits analyzed, 7 regions each explaining over 2% of genetic variance and 54 regions each explaining over 1% of genetic variance were identified. The windows explaining a large proportion of genetic variance overlapped with several potential candidate genes with biological functions linked to shell formation. A multitrait repeatability model using a single-step method is recommended for genomic evaluation of shell quality in layer chickens.
Discovery of genes with large effects on economically important traits has for many years been of interest to breeders. The development of SNP panels which cover the whole genome with high density ...and, more importantly, that can be genotyped on large numbers of individuals at relatively low cost, has opened new opportunities for genome‐wide association studies (GWAS). The objective of this study was to find genomic regions associated with egg production and quality traits in layers using analysis methods developed for the purpose of whole genome prediction. Genotypes on over 4500 birds and phenotypes on over 13 000 hens from eight generations of a brown egg layer line were used. Birds were genotyped with a custom 42K Illumina SNP chip. Recorded traits included two egg production and 11 egg quality traits (puncture score, albumen height, yolk weight and shell colour) at early and late stages of production, as well as body weight and age at first egg. Egg weight was previously analysed by Wolc et al. (). The Bayesian whole genome prediction model – BayesB (Meuwissen et al. ) was used to locate 1 Mb regions that were most strongly associated with each trait. The posterior probability of a 1 Mb window contributing to genetic variation was used as the criterion for suggesting the presence of a quantitative trait locus (QTL) in that window. Depending upon the trait, from 1 to 7 significant (posterior probability >0.9) 1 Mb regions were found. The largest QTL, a region explaining 32% of genetic variance, was found on chr4 at 78 Mb for body weight but had pleiotropic effects on other traits. For the other traits, the largest effects were much smaller, explaining <7% of genetic variance, with regions on chromosomes 2, 12 and 17 explaining above 5% of genetic variance for albumen height, shell colour and egg production, respectively. In total, 45 of 1043 1 Mb windows were estimated to have a non‐zero effect with posterior probability > 0.9 for one or more traits.
Three‐dimensional hydrodynamic z‐layer models, which are used for simulating the flow in rivers, estuaries, and oceans, suffer from an inaccurate and often discontinuous bottom shear stress ...representation, due to the staircase bottom. We analyze the governing equations and clearly show the cause of the inaccuracies. Based on the analysis, we present a new method that significantly reduces the errors and the grid dependency of the results. The method consists of a near‐bed layer‐remapping and a modified near‐bed discretization of the k − ε turbulence model. We demonstrate the applicability of the approach for uniform channel flow, using a schematized two‐dimensional vertical model and for the flow over a bottom sill using the Delft3D modeling system.

ABSTRACT
Magnetars are a promising candidate for the origin of fast radio bursts (FRBs). The detection of an extremely luminous radio burst from the Galactic magnetar SGR J1935+2154 on 2020 April 28 ...added credence to this hypothesis. We report on simultaneous and non-simultaneous observing campaigns using the Arecibo, Effelsberg, LOFAR, MeerKAT, MK2, and Northern Cross radio telescopes and the MeerLICHT optical telescope in the days and months after the April 28 event. We did not detect any significant single radio pulses down to fluence limits between 25 mJy ms and 18 Jy ms. Some observing epochs overlapped with times when X-ray bursts were detected. Radio images made on 4 d using the MeerKAT telescope revealed no point-like persistent or transient emission at the location of the magnetar. No transient or persistent optical emission was detected over seven days. Using the multicolour MeerLICHT images combined with relations between DM, NH, and reddening, we constrain the distance to SGR J1935+2154, to be between 1.5 and 6.5 kpc. The upper limit is consistent with some other distance indicators and suggests that the April 28 burst is closer to two orders of magnitude less energetic than the least energetic FRBs. The lack of single-pulse radio detections shows that the single pulses detected over a range of fluences are either rare, or highly clustered, or both. It may also indicate that the magnetar lies somewhere between being radio-quiet and radio-loud in terms of its ability to produce radio emission efficiently.
Abstract
We present a high-precision timing analysis of PSR J1933−6211, a millisecond pulsar with a 3.5 ms spin period and a white dwarf (WD) companion, using data from the Parkes radio telescope. ...Since we have accurately measured the polarization properties of this pulsar, we have applied the matrix template matching approach in which the times of arrival are measured using full polarimetric information. We achieved a weighted root-mean-square timing residuals of the timing residuals of 1.23 μs, 15.5 per cent improvement compared to the total intensity timing analysis. After studying the scintillation properties of this pulsar, we put constraints on the inclination angle of the system. Based on these measurements and on χ2 mapping we put a 2σ upper limit on the companion mass (0.44 M⊙). Since this mass limit cannot reveal the nature of the companion, we further investigate the possibility of the companion to be a He WD. Applying the orbital period-mass relation for such WDs, we conclude that the mass of a He WD companion would be about 0.26±0.01 M⊙, which combined with the measured mass function and orbital inclination limits, would lead to a light pulsar mass ≤ 1.0 M⊙. This result seems unlikely based on current neutron star formation models and we therefore conclude that PSR J1933−6211 most likely has a CO WD companion, which allows for a solution with a more massive pulsar.

Uridine adenosine tetraphosphate (Up4A), biosynthesized by activation of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR) 2, was initially identified as a potent ...endothelium-derived vasoconstrictor in perfused rat kidney. Subsequently, the effect of Up4A on vascular tone regulation was intensively investigated in arteries isolated from different vascular beds in rodents including rat pulmonary arteries, aortas, mesenteric and renal arteries as well as mouse aortas, in which Up4A produces vascular contraction. In contrast, Up4A produces vascular relaxation in porcine coronary small arteries and rat aortas. Intravenous infusion of Up4A into conscious rats or mice decreases blood pressure, and intravenous bolus injection of Up4A into anesthetized mice increases coronary blood flow, indicating an overall vasodilator influence in vivo. Although Up4A is the first dinucleotide described that contains both purine and pyrimidine moieties, its cardiovascular effects are exerted mainly through activation of purinergic receptors. These effects not only encompass regulation of vascular tone, but also endothelial angiogenesis, smooth muscle cell proliferation and migration, and vascular calcification. Furthermore, this review discusses a potential role for Up4A in cardiovascular pathophysiology, as plasma levels of Up4A are elevated in juvenile hypertensive patients and Up4A-mediated vascular purinergic signaling changes in cardiovascular disease such as hypertension, diabetes, atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction. Better understanding the vascular effect of the novel dinucleotide Up4A and the purinergic signaling mechanisms mediating its effects will enhance its potential as target for treatment of cardiovascular disease.
Secretion of catecholamines from single bovine chromaffin cells in culture was elicited by brief pressure ejections from a micropipette containing nicotine, carbamoylcholine, or potassium ions or by ...mechanical stimulation. Release was monitored electrochemically with a carbon-fiber microelectrode placed adjacent to the cell. Cyclic voltammetry was used to identify secreted species, whereas constant potential amperometry was used for improved temporal resolution (millisecond range) of catecholamine detection. During secretion, brief current spikes were observed, which were shown to be due to detection of catecholamines by electrooxidation. The spikes have the physical characteristics of multimolecular packets of catecholamines released at random times and locations from the surface of the single cell. The half-width of the spikes was found to increase with an increase in cell-electrode spacing. The properties of the catecholamine spikes correlate well with expectations based on secretion from individual storage vesicles. Spikes do not occur in the absence of Ca2+in the buffer, and the majority of spikes are found to be distributed between 0.2 and 2 picocoulombs, corresponding to 1-10 attomoles of catecholamine detected. The frequency of the spikes increases with the intensity of the stimulus, but the average quantity of catecholamine in each spike is independent of the stimulus. Thus, these measurements represent time-resolved observation of quantal secretion of catecholamines and provide direct evidence for the exocytotic hypothesis.
