This work demonstrates the importance of integrating sexual division of labour into the research of the transition to the Neolithic and its social implications. During the spread of the Neolithic in ...Europe, when migration led to the dispersal of domesticated plants and animals, novel tasks and tools, appear in the archaeological record. By examining the use-wear traces from over 400 stone tools from funerary contexts of the earliest Neolithic in central Europe we provide insights into what tasks could have been carried out by women and men. The results of this analysis are then examined for statistically significant correlations with the osteological, isotopic and other grave good data, informing on sexed-based differences in diet, mobility and symbolism. Our data demonstrate males were buried with stone tools used for woodwork, and butchery, hunting or interpersonal violence, while women with those for the working of animal skins, expanding the range of tasks known to have been carried out. The results also show variation along an east-west cline from Slovakia to eastern France, suggesting that the sexual division of labour (or at least its representation in death) changed as farming spread westwards.

Megalithic monuments from Neolithic Europe have long been considered as rough copies of the monumental architectures built by the first civilizations of the Near East and Eastern Mediterranean. When ...radiocarbon dating jeopardized this diffusionist pattern, though, specialists could not but wonder why and how these Neolithic societies, usually considered as small ‘village communities’, had erected such monuments. In order to answer these questions and seek explanations in the social, political or religious contexts of recent or present megalith-building societies, the ethnological frame of references has been referred to on a regular basis. This volume comprises the papers presented by prehistorians and ethnologists at the two multi-disciplinary round tables held in Strasburg in May 2014 and May 2015. Their purpose was, with the help of both case studies and more synthetic works, to discuss how the patterns drawn from the observation of ‘living’ megalithic societies have been used to try and shed light on the functioning of European Neolithic societies, the epistemological problems raised by this transposition and the relevance of ethnology-based archeological explanations. The book is composed of three sections: the first one deals with some methodological reflections, the second and third ones with the ‘living’ or recent megalithisms of respectively the Indonesian Archipelago and Ethiopia.

Les spécialistes des âges du Bronze et du Fer ont montré l’existence, pour leur période, d’une relation dialectique entre les dépôts et les mobiliers funéraires des tombes élitaires. Les travaux ...récents suggèrent que cette relation, mais aussi les réalités sociales qu’elle reflète existaient probablement dès le Néolithique et le Chalcolithique. Les sépultures concernées appartiennent à deux catégories distinctes : les tombes de chefs locaux, comme les porteurs de hache de combat néolithiques ou les porteurs d’épée du Bronze moyen ou du Hallstatt C (T2) et les tombes « royales », comme la tombe chalcolithique de Maikop ou les Fürstengräber hallstattiennes (T1). À ces deux catégories de tombes correspondent deux catégories de dépôts, D1 et D2. Les tombes T1 et les dépôts D1 sont reliées par la présence de biens exceptionnels assimilables à des sacra. L’hypothèse défendue dans cet article est que la configuration formée par les deux couples D1-T1 et D2-T2 ainsi que la relation dialectique entre tombe et dépôts sont déjà présentes au Néolithique (tombes carnacéennes et dépôts de haches alpines) et au Chalcolithique.Il existe donc un véritable système de la tombe élitaire et du dépôt qui apparaît dès la fin du VIe millénaire et se maintient, par la suite, dans les sociétés non-littéraires et non-chrétiennes des confins septentrionaux et orientaux de l’Europe, jusqu’à la fin du Ier millénaire ap. J.-C. Ce système figure parmi les caractéristiques archéologiquement visibles de l’Europe « barbare » telle que la décrivent les textes antiques et médiévaux. Après avoir été en concurrence avec d’autres systèmes au Néolithique, il s’est imposé sur l’ensemble du territoire européen dans le courant du IIIe millénaire. Structurant les relations sociales et le rapport entre le politique et le sacré, il est notamment à l’origine des cycles socio-politiques qui ont, tout au long de la période concernée, des steppes eurasiennes à la façade atlantique, généré l’apparition puis le déclin rapide de sociétés royales proto-étatiques. Les exemples des dépôts danubiens et des tombes carnacéennes nous montrent que son apparition n’est en rien liée aux grandes innovations techniques des Ve et du IVe millénaires. Pour ce qui concerne la métallurgie, par exemple, le schéma inverse paraît plus réaliste : c’est l’existence de sociétés inégalitaires structurées par l’émulation entre élites qui est à l’origine des progrès techniques les plus spectaculaires. La « matrice » anthropologique que constitue la configuration tombes élitaires – dépôts est une des clés de compréhension de la Préhistoire récente européenne, dont elle met en lumière la profonde homogénéité.
The Alsace region bordering the Rhine River was extensively occupied during the Neolithic by farming societies with domesticated animal. The first settlers were two sub-groups of the ...Linearbandkeramik who appeared to diverge in several respects, including: pottery styles, house orientations and funerary rituals. To explore whether this was reflected in food procurement practices investigations were performed of organic residues in nearly 900 pottery vessels from sites across the region. The results reveal lipid biomarker and stable carbon evidence for exploitation of plant and bee products, and most significantly, extensive domestic animal products including: non-ruminant carcass products, and ruminant primary and secondary products. Critically, culturally-related economic differences were seen spatially between the upper and lower Alsatian groups. Temporal differences were confirmed using compound-specific radiocarbon dating of fatty acids preserved in potsherds, showing that while milk exploitation was widespread during the early Neolithic in UA, it only became commonplace in LA generations later.
•Palaeodiet in Neolithic Alsace investigated through lipid residue analysis and direct 14C dating of pottery vessels, with faunal analyses.•Spatial disparity in dairy use existed within two sub-groups of the Linearbandkeramik in Lower and Upper Alsace.•Intensive use of dairy products in Lower Alsace arose during the Middle Neolithic.•Continuous use of bee products and domesticated animal products is evident in the Early to Middle Neolithic.•Vessel specialisation revealed with undecorated vessels used as ‘cooking’ pots and decorated vessels as ‘serving’ wares.
