Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) promise cheap and flexible solar energy. Whereas light generates free charges in silicon photovoltaics, excitons are normally formed in organic semiconductors due to ...their low dielectric constants, and require molecular heterojunctions to split into charges. Recent record efficiency OPVs utilise the small molecule, Y6, and its analogues, which - unlike previous organic semiconductors - have low band-gaps and high dielectric constants. We show that, in Y6 films, these factors lead to intrinsic free charge generation without a heterojunction. Intensity-dependent spectroscopy reveals that 60-90% of excitons form free charges at AM1.5 light intensity. Bimolecular recombination, and hole traps constrain single component Y6 photovoltaics to low efficiencies, but recombination is reduced by small quantities of donor. Quantum-chemical calculations reveal strong coupling between exciton and CT states, and an intermolecular polarisation pattern that drives exciton dissociation. Our results challenge how current OPVs operate, and renew the possibility of efficient single-component OPVs.
Background. Seven persons in one family living in eastern China developed fever and thrombocytopenia during May 2007, but the initial investigation failed to identify an infectious etiology. In ...December 2009, a novel bunyavirus (designated severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome bunyavirus SFTSV) was identified as the cause of illness in patients with similar clinical manifestations in China. We reexamined this family cluster for SFTSV infection. Methods. We analyzed epidemiological and clinical data for the index patient and 6 secondary patients. We tested stored blood specimens from the 6 secondary patients using real time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), viral culture, genetic sequencing, micro-neutralization assay (MNA), and indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Results. An 80-year-old woman with fever, leucopenia, and thrombocytopenia died on 27 April 2007. Between 3 and 7 May 2007, another 6 patients from her family were admitted to a local county hospital with fever and other similar symptoms. Serum specimens collected in 2007 from these 6 patients were positive for SFTS viral RNA through RT-PCR and for antibody to SFTSV through MNA and IFA. SFTSV was isolated from 1 preserved serum specimen. The only shared characteristic between secondary patients was personal contact with the index patient; none reported exposure to suspected animals or vectors. Conclusions. Clinical and laboratory evidence confirmed that the patients of fever and thrombocytopenia occurring in a family cluster in eastern China in 2007 were caused by a newly recognized bunyavirus, SFTSV. Epidemiological investigation strongly suggests that infection of secondary patients was transmitted to family members by personal contact.
The Daya Bay experiment has observed correlations between reactor core fuel evolution and changes in the reactor antineutrino flux and energy spectrum. Four antineutrino detectors in two experimental ...halls were used to identify 2.2 million inverse beta decays (IBDs) over 1230 days spanning multiple fuel cycles for each of six 2.9 GW_{th} reactor cores at the Daya Bay and Ling Ao nuclear power plants. Using detector data spanning effective ^{239}Pu fission fractions F_{239} from 0.25 to 0.35, Daya Bay measures an average IBD yield σover ¯_{f} of (5.90±0.13)×10^{-43} cm^{2}/fission and a fuel-dependent variation in the IBD yield, dσ_{f}/dF_{239}, of (-1.86±0.18)×10^{-43} cm^{2}/fission. This observation rejects the hypothesis of a constant antineutrino flux as a function of the ^{239}Pu fission fraction at 10 standard deviations. The variation in IBD yield is found to be energy dependent, rejecting the hypothesis of a constant antineutrino energy spectrum at 5.1 standard deviations. While measurements of the evolution in the IBD spectrum show general agreement with predictions from recent reactor models, the measured evolution in total IBD yield disagrees with recent predictions at 3.1σ. This discrepancy indicates that an overall deficit in the measured flux with respect to predictions does not result from equal fractional deficits from the primary fission isotopes ^{235}U, ^{239}Pu, ^{238}U, and ^{241}Pu. Based on measured IBD yield variations, yields of (6.17±0.17) and (4.27±0.26)×10^{-43} cm^{2}/fission have been determined for the two dominant fission parent isotopes ^{235}U and ^{239}Pu. A 7.8% discrepancy between the observed and predicted ^{235}U yields suggests that this isotope may be the primary contributor to the reactor antineutrino anomaly.
Aggressive cancers and embryonic stem (ES) cells share a common gene expression signature. Identifying the key factors/pathway(s) within this ES signature responsible for the aggressiveness of ...cancers can lead to a potential cure. In this study, we find that SALL4, a gene involved in the maintenance of ES cell self-renewal, is aberrantly expressed in 47.7% of primary human endometrial cancer samples. It is not expressed in normal or hyperplastic endometrial. More importantly, SALL4 expression is positively correlated with worse patient survival and aggressive features such as metastasis in endometrial carcinoma. Further functional studies have shown that loss of SALL4 inhibits endometrial cancer cell growth in vitro and tumorigenicity in vivo, as a result of inhibition of cell proliferation and increased apoptosis. In addition, downregulation of SALL4 significantly impedes the migration and invasion properties of endometrial cancer cells in vitro and their metastatic potential in vivo. Furthermore, manipulation of SALL4 expression can affect drug sensitivity of endometrial cancer cells to carboplatin. Moreover, we show that SALL4 specifically binds to the c-Myc promoter region in endometrial cancer cells. While downregulation of SALL4 leads to a decreased expression of c-Myc at both protein and mRNA levels, ectopic SALL4 overexpression causes increased c-Myc protein and mRNA expression, indicating that c-Myc is one of the SALL4 downstream targets in endometrial tumorigenesis. In summary, we are the first to demonstrate that SALL4 has functional role(s) in metastasis and drug resistance in aggressive endometrial cancer. As a consequence of its functional roles in cancer cell and absence in normal tissue, SALL4 is a potential novel therapeutic target for the high-risk endometrial cancer patient population.
A measurement of the energy dependence of antineutrino disappearance at the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment is reported. Electron antineutrinos (ν¯(e)) from six 2.9 GW(th) reactors were ...detected with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 and 561 m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls. Using 217 days of data, 41 589 (203 809 and 92 912) antineutrino candidates were detected in the far hall (near halls). An improved measurement of the oscillation amplitude sin(2)2θ(13)=0.090(-0.009)(+0.008) and the first direct measurement of the ν¯(e) mass-squared difference |Δm(ee)2|=(2.59(-0.20)(+0.19))×10(-3) eV2 is obtained using the observed ν¯(e) rates and energy spectra in a three-neutrino framework. This value of |Δm(ee)2| is consistent with |Δm(μμ)2| measured by muon neutrino disappearance, supporting the three-flavor oscillation model.
Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) CRNDE has been identified as a tumor oncogene in glioma. However, its clinical significance and prognostic value in glioma have not been investigated until now. The aim ...of this study was to explore CRNDE expression levels and evaluated its clinical significance in glioma patients.
Expression levels of lncRNA CRNDE in 164 glioma specimens were determined by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The chi-square test was used to explore CRNDE expression with respect to clinicopathological parameters. The overall survival was analyzed by log-rank test, and survival curves were plotted according to Kaplan-Meier. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to analyze the prognostic significance of CRNDE expression.
Compared with nonneoplastic brain tissues, the expression level of CRNDE was significantly increased in glioma tissues (p < 0.01). CRNDE upregulation was correlated with larger tumor size (p = 0.011), higher WHO grade (p = 0.001), and recurrence (p = 0.008). Also, survival analysis proved that up-regulated CRNDE expression was associated with poor overall survival of glioma patients (p < 0.001). The multivariate Cox regression analysis indicated that CRNDE expression was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival.
These results indicated that lncRNA CRNDE was associated with tumor progression and could be an independent prognostic factor for glioma patients.

W. When the OHP was operated at a steady state and an incremental heat load was added to it, the OHP operation changed from a steady state to an unsteady state until a new steady state was reached. This process can be divided into three regions: (I) unsteady state; (II) transient state; and (III) new steady state. In the steady state, the amplitude of temperature change in the evaporator is smaller than that of the condenser while the temperature response keeps the same frequency both in the evaporator and the condenser. The experimental results also showed that the amplitude of temperature difference between the evaporator and the condenser decreased when the heat load increased.
A detailed mathematical model predicting the effect of contact angle on the meniscus radius, thin film profile and heat flux distribution occurring in the micro-trapezoidal grooves of a heat pipe has ...been presented. The model can be used to determine the maximum evaporating heat transfer rate in the evaporator including the effects of disjoining pressure and surface tension. The equation of meniscus radii calculation in the evaporator at given heat load based on the liquid wicks configuration has been put forward. The numerical results show that while the capillary limitation governs the maximum heat transport capability in a grooved heat pipe, the thin film evaporation determines the effective thermal conductivity in a grooved heat pipe. The ratio of the heat transfer through the thin film region to the total heat transfer through the wall to the vapor phase decreases when the contact angle increases. The superheat effects on the heat flux distribution in the thin film region also have been conducted and the results show that the disjoining pressure plays an important role in this region. The current investigation will result in a better understanding of thin film evaporation and its effect on the effective thermal conductivity in a grooved heat pipe.

. A total of 59 volunteers received product and underwent ETEC challenge. The BSIgG products were well-tolerated across all subjects. Upon challenge, 14/20 (70%) placebo recipients developed MSD, compared to 12/19 (63%; p = .74) receiving anti-CS6 BSIgG and 7/20 (35%; p = .06) receiving anti-B7A BSIgG. Immune responses to the ETEC infection were modest across all groups.
. Bovine-derived serum antibodies appear safe and well tolerated. Antibodies derived from cattle immunized with whole cell B7A provided 50% protection against MSD following B7A challenge; however, no protection was observed in subjects receiving serum antibodies targeting CS6. The lack of observed efficacy in this group may be due to low CS6 surface expression on B7A, the high dose challenge inoculum and/or the use of serum derived antibodies versus colostrum-derived antibodies.
Immunotherapy has changed the oncology landscape during the last decade and become standard of care for several cancers. The combinations of immunotherapy with other treatment modalities are also ...being investigated. One of the challenges to investigate such combinations is to identify suitable mouse models for the pre-clinical experiments. In the past, we and other researchers showed that murine B16-F10 melanoma in C57Bl6 mice is refractory to treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors. In this work we studied the suitability of an alternative syngeneic model, Cloudman S91 murine melanoma in DBA/2 mouse (DBA/2NCrl), to study the combination of immunotherapy targeting PD-1 and radioimmunotherapy targeting melanin. DBA/2 male and female mice were injected subcutaneously with 3-6 million Cloudman S91 cells. When the tumors reached ~150 mm
volume, the animals were treated intraperitoneally with PBS (sham), h8C3 unlabeled (cold) antibody to melanin, immunotherapy with anti-PD-1 antibody, radioimmunotherapy with 213Bismuth (
Bi)-labeled h8C3 antibody, or several combinations of immunotherapy and radioimmunotherapy. Treatments with immunotherapy alone produced very modest effect on the tumor size, while combination therapy resulted in significant slowing down of the tumor growth, increased animal survival, and no decrease in animal body weight. We conclude that Cloudman S91 murine melanoma in DBA/2 mouse is a suitable model to evaluate combination of immunotherapy of melanoma with tangentially targeted treatments.
