Carinthia is more distant from the Catholic Church than other Austrian states. There are many indications that this has something to do with the political and social characteristics of the country. ...Thus one is amazed outside of Carinthia about unusual election results, the conflict over the Slovenian language or the high proportion of illegitimate children. In his historical investigation, Johannes Thonhauser shows how these phenomena are related to a widespread church skepticism. As a key phase for this he describes the time before the "Anschluss" in 1938, in which the National Socialism formed in resistance to an authoritarian church.
At the same time solidified central memory traditions of the country, which still characterize the "Carinthian soul".
In Kärnten steht man der katholischen Kirche distanzierter gegenüber als in anderen österreichischen Bundesländern. Vieles deutet darauf hin, dass dies eng mit den politischen und gesellschaftlichen ...Eigenheiten des Landes zu tun hat. So staunt man außerhalb Kärntens über ungewöhnliche Wahlergebnisse, den Konflikt um die slowenische Sprache oder den hohen Anteil an unehelichen Kindern. Johannes Thonhauser zeigt in seiner historischen Untersuchung, inwiefern diese Phänomene mit einer weitverbreiteten Kirchenskepsis zusammenhängen. Als Schlüsselphase dafür beschreibt er die Zeit vor dem „Anschluss" 1938, in der sich der Nationalsozialismus im Widerstand gegen eine autoritäre Kirche formierte. Zugleich verfestigten sich in dieser Zeit zentrale Erinnerungstraditionen des Landes, die bis heute die „Kärntner Seele" prägen. Als Belegmaterial dienen dem Autor nicht nur bislang unveröffentlichtes Archivmaterial, sondern auch zahlreiche Auszüge aus Literatur und Kunst des Landes.
Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit kollektiven Erinnerungstraditionen im österreichischen Bundesland Kärnten, wo im Jahr 2020 zahlreiche Feierlichkeiten anlässlich des 100-Jahr-Jubiläums der ...Volksabstimmung vom 10. Oktober 1920 begangen werden. Ausgehend von diesem Ereignis untersucht der Beitrag die Entwicklung eines „Narrativs von Bedrohung und Widerstand“, das über Generationen hinweg als identitätsstiftendes Element im kollektiven Gedächtnis der Kärntner und Kärntnerinnen ausgestaltet wurde. In Anlehnung an die Unterscheidung von kommunikativem und kulturellem Gedächtnis wird dieses Narrativ zunächst als Element bewusster Tradierung vorgestellt. In einem zweiten Schritt wird am Beispiel des im Kärnten des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts bedeutenden Phänomens des Geheimprotestantismus gezeigt, inwiefern im kollektiven Gedächtnis auch unbewusste Erinnerungsbestände transportiert werden und die politische Kultur einer Gesellschaft bis in die Gegenwart prägen können. Dazu werden die kulturwissenschaftlichen Begriffs-instrumentarien von Jan und Aleida Assmann zum kulturellen Gedächtnis mit den Einsichten des Soziologen Norbert Elias in Verbindung gebracht, mit dessen Habituskonzept eine generationenübergreifende Weitergabe von Verhaltensmustern verstehbar werden kann. This article addresses collective traditions of remembrance in Carinthia, which celebrates the centenary of the Carinthian plebiscite on 10 October 1920 with a host of events this year. Taking this occasion as a starting point, the establishment of a “narrative of threat and resistance” that has informed identity formation across generations as part of Carinthia’s collective memory will be investigated. First, the concept of the narrative will be defined as an element of conscious transfer based on the difference between communicative and cultural memory. Then, the transfer of unconscious memories within a collective memory and how they can shape the political culture of a society in ways that still resonate in the present will be examined on the example of Carinthian cryptoProtestantism in the 17th and 18th century. The research applies cultural science concepts according to Jan and Aleida Assmann together with the habitus concept of sociologist Norbert Elias in order to explain the cross-generational transfer of behavioural patterns.
This article focuses on the role of the church in Carinthian history, especially in the Austrofascist Era 1933–1938. The Austrofascist Regime and its political elites in Vienna were very unpopular in ...Carinthia and National Socialism rose in the underground. For many Carinthians this regime was the return of the Counter Reformation. As by the time of 17th and 18th century, state and church built a union to control and discipline the “simple” people. For this reason, many people left the Catholic Church and converted to Protestantism. This was the culmination of a long–term development that formed a “habitus of resistance” against state and church authority, especially among land folks in Upper Carinthia. The first part of the article has the aim to explain these developments and gives a historical frame for the second part, which deals with the Austrofascist Era. To illustrate the anticlerical atmosphere of that time, secret reports from priests, who informed the bishop about illegal movements in their parishes, will be analyzed.

In this paper, Pylos playing autonomous robot is discussed. This robot is combined with optimal game winning strategies. This results in an artificial companion which plays the board game Pylos in a ...fully interactive manner and up to the highest possible level. In the long term this could lead to interesting competitions between various autonomous robots playing several board games in an interactive way, possibly at exhibitions very similar to what happens for soccer in the RoboCup initiative.
