An energy-efficient biosignal processing (BSP) system with a silent mirror tracer is proposed for long-term activity monitoring in battery-operated wearable devices. We implemented our approach using ...the PRUDAQ analog front stacked on the BeagleBone base station. A low-power highspeed sampler in PRUDAQ is directly integrated with the digital signal processing (DSP) unit in BeagleBone to reduce the communication overhead on connecting to any cloud-side host computer. The BSP on-chip timer-driven hardware directly drives the PRUDAQ sampler without CPU activation and silently traces samples into a mirrored buffer. The proposed method could significantly reduce the number of temporary pauses by running the interrupt service routines and frequent buffer flush to swap traced samples between the host computer. The proposed BSP system results in a 15% reduction of total energy consumption by silently tracing incoming samples in case of extracting features from the 20 million samples for long-term activity monitoring applications such as electrocardiogram (ECG) signals.
A series of Dy3+, Sm3+, and Dy3+/Sm3+ doped Gd2WO6 phosphors were synthesized by the conventional solid-state reaction. The X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that all of the diffraction peaks could ...be attributed to the monoclinic Gd2WO6 crystal structure, irrespective of the type and the concentration of activator ions. The photoluminescence (PL) excitation spectra of Dy3+-doped Gd2WO6 phosphors contained an intense charge transfer band centered at 302 nm in the range of 240-340 nm and two weak peaks at 351 and 386 nm. Under an excitation wavelength of 302 nm, the PL emission spectra consisted of two strong blue and yellow bands centered at 482 nm and 577 nm. The PL emission spectra of the Sm3+-doped Gd2WO6 phosphors had a series of three peaks centered at 568 nm, 613 nm, and 649 nm, corresponding to the 6G5/2 → 6H5/2, 6G5/2 → 6H9/2, and 6G5/2 → 6H11/2 transitions of Sm3+, respectively. The PL emission spectra of the Dy3+- and Sm3+-codoped Gd2WO6 phosphors showed the blue and yellow emission lines originating from the 4F9/2 → 6H15/2 and 4F9/2 → 4H13/2 transitions of Dy3+ and reddish-orange and red emission bands due to the 4G5/2 → 6H7/2 and 4G5/2 → 6H9/2 transitions of Sm3+. As the concentration of Sm3+ increased from 1 to 15 mol%, the intensities of two PL spectra emitted by the Dy3+ ions gradually decreased, while those of the three emission bands due to the Sm3+ ions slowly increased, thus producing the color change from white to orange. The CIE color coordinates of Gd2WO6:5 mol% Dy3+, 1 mol% Sm3+ phosphors were (0.406, 0.407), which was located in the warm white light region.
The six-step operation of surface-mounted permanent magnet machine drives in a flux weakening region has many advantages compared to the pulse width modulation mode, such as the reduced switching ...loss and fully utilized inverter output voltage. However, if the ratio of the sampling frequency to the fundamental frequency is low in fixed sampling system, the low-frequency oscillation in the current can be incurred in the six-step operation. The low-frequency current causes a system stability problem and reduces system efficiency due to an excessive heat and high power loss. Therefore, this paper proposes the variable time step controller for six-step operation. By updating an output voltage, sampling phase currents, and executing the digital controller synchronized with the variable sampling time, the turn on and off switch signals for six-step operation can be generated at the exact moment. As a result, the low-frequency oscillation in the phase current can be eliminated. In addition, the system transfer function of the proposed control method is discussed for the system stability and system dynamic analysis. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the comparative simulation and experimental results.
Gastric cancer (GC) is commonly treated by chemotherapy using 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) derivatives and platinum combination, but predictive biomarker remains lacking. We develop patient-derived ...xenografts (PDXs) from 31 GC patients and treat with a combination of 5-FU and oxaliplatin, to determine biomarkers associated with responsiveness. When the PDXs are defined as either responders or non-responders according to tumor volume change after treatment, the responsiveness of PDXs is significantly consistent with the respective clinical outcomes of the patients. An integrative genomic and transcriptomic analysis of PDXs reveals that pathways associated with cell-to-cell and cell-to-extracellular matrix interactions enriched among the non-responders in both cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment (TME). We develop a 30-gene prediction model to determine the responsiveness to 5-FU and oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy and confirm the significant poor survival outcomes among cases classified as non-responder-like in three independent GC cohorts. Our study may inform clinical decision-making when designing treatment strategies.
Chiral supramolecules have great potential for use in chiral recognition, sensing, and catalysis. Particularly, chiral supramolecular biocoordination polymers (SBCPs) provide a versatile platform for ...characterizing biorelated processes such as chirality transcription. Here, we selectively synthesize homochiral and heterochiral SBCPs, composed of chiral naphthalene diimide ligands and Zn ions, from enantiomeric and mixed R-ligands and S-ligands, respectively. Notably, we find that the chiral self-sorted SBCPs exhibit multifunctional properties, including photochromic, photoluminescent, photoconductive, and chemiresistive characteristics, thus can be used for various sensors. Specifically, these materials can be used for detecting hazardous amine materials due to the electron transfer from the amine to the SBCP surface and for enantioselectively sensing a chiral species naproxen due to the different binding energies with regard to their chirality. These results provide guidelines for the synthesis of chiral SBCPs and demonstrate their versatility and feasibility for use in various sensors covering photoactive, chemiresistive, and chiral sensors.
This technical note studies robustness of synchronization against heterogeneity of multi-agent systems. Here, heterogeneity also includes uncertainties and external disturbances in each agent. In ...order to effectively deal with the heterogeneous agents, we introduce the concept of the averaged dynamics which is the average of all agents' dynamics, and then claim that two sources enhance the robustness of synchronized behavior against heterogeneity of agents' dynamics. First, in spite of the heterogeneity of agents' dynamics, we show that strong coupling among agents makes the trajectories of all agents arbitrarily close to the averaged dynamics. Second, in the averaged dynamics, the effect of variations in each agent gets smaller as the number of agents increases. Simulation results confirm the claim that a large number of agents with strong couplings have robust synchronization.

Comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) is a multidisciplinary diagnostic and treatment process to evaluate medical, psychosocial, and functional capability. It is useful to develop a coordinated and integrated plan for frail older patients. This study aimed to examine the current scope of CGA based multidisciplinary team interventions in acute care setting to improve the health outcomes for older adults.
We searched electronic databases: PubMed, Ovid, PsychINFO, Scopus, RISS and KoreaMed from 2011 to 2021. The selected articles were extracted by three reviewers and cross checked by the fourth reviewer to resolve any conflicts. Data were synthesized and analyzed descriptively and thematically. Articles are nested three themes: inpatient (IN), emergency room (ER) and oncology patient (ONCO).
Of the 1830 articles that were screened, 710 were potentially eligible. Finally, 26 articles were selected and categorized as IN (n=8), ER (n=7) and ONCO (n=11). Geriatricians and nurses participated in most of the multidisciplinary teams followed by other health professionals. The most effective primary outcomes were focused and retrieved across five domains, screening, prevention, treatment, quality of care, and rehabilitation. The subdomains are problem lists which is common and problematic among hospitalized older patients and retrieved from the most commonly used multidisciplinary interventions according to each domain.
CGA based multidimensional intervention (MDI) are likely to be an effective in care of older adults. There is remarkable paradigm shift required to improve better health outcomes for hospitalized older adults. It also suggests that there is a need to design the CGA based MDI to build a standardized protocol for older adults to maintain functional capacity and increase likelihood of living in their own home.

Abstract
Background
Unmet health needs are particularly important to people with disabilities; however, these unmet needs owing to limitations in daily life have been under-researched thus far. This ...study examined the effects of disability-related limitations in daily life on unmet needs.
Methods
This study included 5,074 adults with disabilities from the 2018–2020 Korea Disability and Life Dynamics Panel. We analyzed the effects of disability-related limitations in daily life on unmet needs using logistic regression with a generalized estimating equation model.
Results
Overall, 4.8% men and 4.6% women with disabilities had unmet needs. For men, unmet needs were 1.46 times (95% confidence interval CI 1.09–1.96) higher for those with moderate limitations in daily life. For women, unmet needs were 1.79 times (95% CI 1.22–2.39) higher when there were moderate limitations in daily life. The prominent factors causing this effect were physical or brain lesion disability for men and internal or facial disability and burden of medical expenses for women.
Conclusions
Limitations in daily life due to disability increase the risk of having unmet needs, an effect that is significantly more pronounced in men. These unmet needs differ depending on an individual’s sex, disability type, limited body parts, and other specific causes. Efforts are required to reduce the unmet needs of people with disabilities by considering the type of disability, impaired body parts, and causes of unmet needs in daily life.
Climate change is recognized as a major threat to global biodiversity and has already caused extensive regional extinction. In particular danger are the plant habitats in subalpine zones, which are ...more vulnerable to climate change. Evergreen coniferous trees in South Korean subalpine zones are currently designated as a species that need special care given their conservation value, but the reason for their decline and its seriousness remains unclear. This research estimates the potential land suitability (LS) of the subalpine zones in South Korea for six coniferous species vulnerable to climate change in the current time (1970–2000) and two future periods, the 2050s (2041–2060) and the 2070s (2061–2080). We analyze the ensemble-averaged loss of currently suitable habitats in the future, using nine species distribution models (SDMs). Korean arborvitae (Thuja koraiensis) and Khingan fir (Abies nephrolepis) are two species expected to experience significant habitat losses in 2050 (−59.5% under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 to −65.9% under RCP 8.5 and −56.3% under RCP 4.5 to −57.7% under RCP 8.5, respectively). High extinction risks are estimated for these species, due to the difficulty of finding other suitable habitats with high LS. The current habitat of Korean fir (Abies koreana), listed as a threatened species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, is expected to decrease by −23.9% (RCP 4.5) to −28.4% (RCP 8.5) and −36.5% (RCP 4.5) to −36.7% (RCP 8.5) in the 2050s and 2070s, respectively. Still, its suitable habitats are also estimated to expand geographically toward the northern part of the Baekdudaegan mountain range. We aimed to demonstrate the associations between social interactions within social distancing norms during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and cognitive function among South Korean ...older adults.
Data from the 2017 and 2020 Survey of Living Conditions and Welfare Needs of Korean Older Persons were used. There were 18,813 participants (7,539 males; 11,274 females). T-test and multiple logistic regression analyses verified whether the mean difference in older adults' cognitive function before and during the COVID-19 pandemic was statistically significant. We also examined the associations between social interactions and cognitive function. The key results were presented as odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI).
All participants were more likely to experience cognitive impairment during the COVID-19 pandemic than before (males: OR 1.56, 95% CI 1.3-1.78; females: OR 1.26, 95% CI: 1.14-1.40). Cognitive impairment increased linearly with the decreased frequency of face-to-face contact with non-cohabiting children. Possible cognitive impairment was greater for females who had not visited senior welfare centers for the past year (OR 1.43, 95% CI 1.21-1.69).
Korean older adults' cognitive function declined during the COVID-19 pandemic and was associated with reduced social interactions because of social distancing measures. Alternative interventions should be promoted for safely restoring social networks, considering the adverse effects of long-term social distancing on older adults' mental health and cognitive function.
