Summary form only given. We report the demonstration of high output power (>1 W), single frequency and ultra-short pulse operation (<5 ps) of a newly developed Diode-Pumped broadband ...Multiple-Quantum-Well Vertical-External-Cavity Surface-Emitting semiconductor Laser (DP-VECSEL). The laser operates cw at room temperature with a low divergence circular TEM/sub 00/ beam and is broadly tunable (>50 nm) by simply changing the lasing spot position on the wafer. We also demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, high sensitivity Intra-Cavity Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (ICLAS) with a DP-VECSEL. A detection limit lower than 10/sup -10/ per cm of absorption path has been achieved given /spl sim/10/sup -11/ cmHz/sup 1/2/. For this application, the spectro-temporal dynamics of the DP-VECSEL has been studied in the time range from a few microseconds to about one second.
Strong coupling between electrical and mechanical phenomena and the presence of switchable polarization have enabled applications of ferroelectric materials for nonvolatile memories (FeRAM), data ...storage, and ferroelectric lithography. Understanding the local functionality of inorganic ferroelectrics including crystallographic orientation, piezoresponse, elasticity, and mechanisms for polarization switching, requires probing material structure and properties on the level of a single ferroelectric grain or domain. Here, I present recent studies on electromechanical, mechanical, and spectroscopic characterization of ferroelectric materials by Scanning Probe Microscopy. Three-dimensional electromechanical imaging, referred to as Vector Piezoresponse Force Microscopy, is presented. Nanoelectromechanics of PFM, including the structure of coupled electroelastic fields and tip-surface contact mechanics, is analyzed. This establishes a complete continuum mechanics description of the PFM and Atomic Force Acoustic Microscopy imaging mechanisms. Mechanism for local polarization switching is analyzed. The hysteresis loop shape is shown to be determined by the formation of the transient domain below the tip, the size of which increases with the tip bias. Spectroscopic imaging that allows relevant characteristics of switching process, such as imprint bias, pinning strength, remanent and saturation response, is introduced. Finally, resolution in PFM and vector PFM imaging of local crystallographic and molecular orientation and disorder is introduced.
We report on the performance of a monitoring system for a prototype calorimeter for the BTeV experiment that uses Lead Tungstate crystals coupled with photomultiplier tubes. The tests were carried ...out at the 70 GeV accelerator complex at Protvino, Russia.
Studies of the radiation hardness of lead tungstate crystals produced by the Bogoroditsk Techno-Chemical Plant in Russia and the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics in China have been carried out at IHEP, ...Protvino. The crystals were irradiated by a 40-GeV pion beam. After full recovery, the same crystals were irradiated using a \(^{137}Cs\) \(\gamma\)-ray source. The dose rate profiles along the crystal length were observed to be quite similar. We compare the effects of the two types of radiation on the crystals light output.
The energy dependence of the energy and position resolutions of the electromagnetic calorimeter prototype made of lead tungstate crystals produced in Bogoroditsk (Russia) and Shanghai (China) is ...presented. These measurementswere carried out at the Protvino accelerator using a 1 to 45 GeV electron beam. The crystals were coupled to photomultiplier tubes. The dependence of energy and position resolutions on different factors as well as the measured electromagnetic shower lateral profile are presented.
We report on the effects of radiation on the light output of lead tungstate crystals. The crystals were irradiated by pure, intense high energy electron and hadron beams as well as by a mixture of ...hadrons, neutrons and gammas. The crystals were manufactured in Bogoroditsk, Apatity (both Russia), and Shanghai (China). These studies were carried out at the 70-GeV proton accelerator in Protvino.
