We report the spectroscopic confirmation of 22 new multiply lensed sources behind the Hubble Frontier Field (HFF) galaxy cluster MACS J0416.1−2403 (MACS 0416), using archival data from the Multi Unit ...Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the VLT. Combining with previous spectroscopic measurements of 15 other multiply imaged sources, we have obtained a sample of 102 secure multiple images with measured redshifts, the largest to date in a single strong lensing system. The newly confirmed sources are largely low-luminosity Lyman-α emitters with redshift in the range 3.08−6.15 . With such a large number of secure constraints, and a significantly improved sample of galaxy members in the cluster core, we have improved our previous strong lensing model and obtained a robust determination of the projected total mass distribution of MACS 0416. We find evidence of three cored dark-matter halos, adding to the known complexity of this merging system. The total mass density profile, as well as the sub-halo population, are found to be in good agreement with previous works. We update and make public the redshift catalog of MACS 0416 from our previous spectroscopic campaign with the new MUSE redshifts. We also release lensing maps (convergence, shear, magnification) in the standard HFF format.
ABSTRACT
We present the results from the search for Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) in the proximity of 11 C iv absorption systems at z > 4.7 in the spectrum of the QSO J1030+0524, using data from ...Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer. We have found multiple LAE candidates close to four C iv systems at $z_{{\rm{C {\small IV}}}=4.94$–5.74 with $\log _{10}(N_{{\rm{C {\small IV}}}$cm−2) > 13.5. At z = 5–6, C iv systems with W$_0({\rm{C {\small IV}}})\gt 0.2$ Å seem more likely to have galaxies with Ly α emission within ρ < 200 proper kpc (4/5 cases) than the C iv systems with W$_0({\rm{C {\small IV}}})\lt 0.2$ Å (0/6 cases). The impact parameter of LAE–C iv systems with equivalent widths W0(C iv) > 0.5 Å is in the range $11\, \lesssim \, \rho \, \lesssim \, 200$ proper kpc (pkpc). Furthermore, all candidates are in the luminosity range 0.18–1.15 L$^{\star }_{\rm{{Ly\alpha}}}(z=5.7)$, indicating that the environment of C iv systems within 200 pkpc is populated by the faint end of the Ly α luminosity function. We report a 0.28 L$^{\star }_{\rm{{Ly\alpha}}}$ galaxy at a separation of ρ = 11 pkpc from a strong C iv absorption ($\log _{10}(N_{{\rm{C {\small IV}}}$cm−2) = 14.52) at $z_{{\rm{C {\small IV}}}=5.72419$. The prevalence of sub-L$^{\star }_{\rm{{Ly\alpha}}}$ galaxies in the proximity of z > 4.9 C iv systems suggest that the absorbing material is rather young, likely ejected in the recent past of the identified galaxies. The connection between faint LAEs and high-ionization absorption systems reported in this work is potentially a consequence of the role of low-mass galaxies in the early evolution of the circum-galactic and intergalactic media.
We present VLT/X-Shooter and MUSE spectroscopy of a faint F814W = 28.60 + or - 0.33 (M sub(UV)=-17.0, low-mass (<, ~10 super(7)M sub(middo t in circle)), and compact (R sub(eff)= 62 pc) freshly ...star-forming galaxy at z= 3.1169 magnified (16x) by the Hubble Frontier Fields galaxy cluster Abell S1063. Gravitational lensing allows for a significant jump toward low-luminosity regimes, in moderately high-resolution spectroscopy (R= lambda /dlambda ~ 3000-7400). We measured C IV lambda 1548, 1550, He II lambda 1640, O IIIlambda 1661,1666, C IIIlambdalambda 1907,1909, Hbeta, OIIIlambdalambda 4959,5007 emission lines with <, ~ 50 km s super(-1) and (de-lensed) fluxes spanning the interval 1.0 x 10 super(-19)-2 x 10 super(-18) erg s super(-1) cm super(-2) at signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) = 4-30. The double-peaked Lyalpha emission with Deltanured - blue) = 280 (+ or -7) km s super(-1) and de-lensed fluxes 2.4 sub((blue)) 8.5 sub((red)) x 10 super(-18) erg s super(-1) cm super(-2)(S/N = 38 sub((blue)) 110 sub((red))) indicate a low column density of neutral hydrogen gas consistent with a highly ionized interstellar medium as also inferred from the large OIIIlambda 5007/ OIIlambda 3727 > 10 ratio. We detect C IV lambda 1548,1550 resonant doublet in emission, each component with FWHM <, ~ 45 km s super(-1) and redshifted by +51(+ or -10) km s super(-1) relative to the systemic redshift. We interpret this as nebular emission tracing an expanding optically thin interstellar medium. Both C IV lambda 1548,1550 and He II lambda 1640 suggest the presence of hot and massive stars (with a possible faint active galactic nucleus). The ultraviolet slope is remarkably blue, beta =-2.95 + or - 0.20 (F sub(lambda)= lambda super(beta)), consistent with a dust-free and young <, ~20 Myr galaxy. Line ratios suggest an oxygen abundance 12 + log(O/H) < 7.8. We are witnessing an early episode of star formation in which a relatively low N sub(H I) and negligible dust attenuation might favor a leakage of ionizing radiation. This galaxy currently represents a unique low-luminosity reference object for future studies of the reionization epoch with the James Webb Space Telescope.
Aims. We perform a comprehensive study of the total mass distribution of the galaxy cluster RXC J2248.7−4431 (z = 0.348) with a set of high-precision strong lensing models, which take advantage of ...extensive spectroscopic information on many multiply lensed systems. In the effort to understand and quantify inherent systematics in parametric strong lensing modelling, we explore a collection of 22 models in which we use different samples of multiple image families, different parametrizations of the mass distribution and cosmological parameters. Methods. As input information for the strong lensing models, we use the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) imaging data and spectroscopic follow-up observations, with the VIsible Multi-Object Spectrograph (VIMOS) and Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT), to identify and characterize bona fide multiple image families and measure their redshifts down to mF814W ≃ 26. A total of 16 background sources, over the redshift range 1.0−6.1, are multiply lensed into 47 images, 24 of which are spectroscopically confirmed and belong to ten individual sources. These also include a multiply lensed Lyman-α blob at z = 3.118. The cluster total mass distribution and underlying cosmology in the models are optimized by matching the observed positions of the multiple images on the lens plane. Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques are used to quantify errors and covariances of the best-fit parameters. Results. We show that with a careful selection of a large sample of spectroscopically confirmed multiple images, the best-fit model can reproduce their observed positions with a rms scatter of 0.̋3 in a fixed flat ΛCDM cosmology, whereas the lack of spectroscopic information or the use of inaccurate photometric redshifts can lead to biases in the values of the model parameters. We find that the best-fit parametrization for the cluster total mass distribution is composed of an elliptical pseudo-isothermal mass distribution with a significant core for the overall cluster halo and truncated pseudo-isothermal mass profiles for the cluster galaxies. We show that by adding bona fide photometric-selected multiple images to the sample of spectroscopic families, one can slightly improve constraints on the model parameters. In particular, we find that the degeneracy between the lens total mass distribution and the underlying geometry of the Universe, which is probed via angular diameter distance ratios between the lens and sources and the observer and sources, can be partially removed. Allowing cosmological parameters to vary together with the cluster parameters, we find (at 68% confidence level) Ωm = 0.25+ 0.13-0.16 and w = −1.07+ 0.16-0.42 for a flat ΛCDM model, and Ωm = 0.31+ 0.12-0.13 and ΩΛ = 0.38+ 0.38-0.27 for a Universe with w = −1 and free curvature. Finally, using toy models mimicking the overall configuration of multiple images and cluster total mass distribution, we estimate the impact of the line-of-sight mass structure on the positional rms to be 0.̋3 ± 0. We argue that the apparent sensitivity of our lensing model to cosmography is due to the combination of the regular potential shape of RXC J2248, a large number of bona fide multiple images out to z = 6.1, and a relatively modest presence of intervening large-scale structure, as revealed by our spectroscopic survey.
In spite of their conjectured importance for the Epoch of Reionization, the properties of low-mass galaxies are currently still very much under debate. In this article, we study the stellar and ...gaseous properties of faint, low-mass galaxies at z> 3. We observed the Frontier Fields cluster Abell S1063 with MUSE over a 2 arcmin super(2) field, and combined integral-field spectroscopy with gravitational lensing to perform a blind search for intrinsically faint Ly alpha emitters (LAEs). We determined in total the redshift of 172 galaxies of which 14 are lensed LAEs at z=3-6.1. We increased the number of spectroscopically-confirmed multiple-image families from 6 to 17 and updated our gravitational-lensing model accordingly. The lensing-corrected Ly alpha luminosities are with L sub(Ly alpha ) <, ~ 10 super(41.5) erg/s among the lowest for spectroscopically confirmed LAEs at any redshift. We used expanding gaseous shell models to fit the Ly alpha line profile, and find low column densities and expansion velocities. This is, to our knowledge, the first time that gaseous properties of such faint galaxies at z> ~ 3 are reported. We performed SED modelling to broadband photometry from the U band through the infrared to determine the stellar properties of these LAEs. The stellar masses are very low (10 super(6-8)M sub(middot in circle)), and are accompanied by very young ages of 1-100 Myr. The very high specific star-formation rates (~100 Gyr super(-1)) are characteristic of starburst galaxies, and we find that most galaxies will double their stellar mass in <, ~ 20 Myr. The UV-continuum slopes beta are low in our sample, with beta < -2 for all galaxies with Mlow * < 10 super(8)M sub(middot in circle). We conclude that our low-mass galaxies at 3 < z< 6 are forming stars at higher rates when correcting for stellar mass effects than seen locally or in more massive galaxies. The young stellar populations with high star-formation rates and low Hi column densities lead to continuum slopes and LyC-escape fractions expected for a scenario where low mass galaxies reionise the Universe.
We present the first observations of the Frontier Fields cluster Abell S1063 taken with the newly commissioned Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral field spectrograph. We analyzed the ...four hours of data obtained in the science verification phase on this cluster and measured redshifts for 53 galaxies. We confirm the redshift of five cluster galaxies, and determine the redshift of 29 other cluster members. We report the detection of a new z = 4.113 multiply lensed galaxy, with images that are consistent with lensing model predictions derived for the Frontier Fields. Overall, our results illustrate the breadth of scientific topics that can be addressed with a single MUSE pointing. We conclude that MUSE is a very efficient instrument to observe galaxy clusters, enabling their mass modeling, and to perform a blind search for high-redshift galaxies.
ABSTRACT Supernova "Refsdal," multiply imaged by cluster MACS1149.5+2223, represents a rare opportunity to make a true blind test of model predictions in extragalactic astronomy, on a timescale that ...is short compared to a human lifetime. In order to take advantage of this event, we produced seven gravitational lens models with five independent methods, based on Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Hubble Frontier Field images, along with extensive spectroscopic follow-up observations by HST, the Very Large and the Keck Telescopes. We compare the model predictions and show that they agree reasonably well with the measured time delays and magnification ratios between the known images, even though these quantities were not used as input. This agreement is encouraging, considering that the models only provide statistical uncertainties, and do not include additional sources of uncertainties such as structure along the line of sight, cosmology, and the mass sheet degeneracy. We then present the model predictions for the other appearances of supernova "Refsdal." A future image will reach its peak in the first half of 2016, while another image appeared between 1994 and 2004. The past image would have been too faint to be detected in existing archival images. The future image should be approximately one-third as bright as the brightest known image (i.e., mag at peak and mag six months before peak), and thus detectable in single-orbit HST images. We will find out soon whether our predictions are correct.
Supernova (SN) Refsdal is the first multiply imaged, highly magnified, and spatially resolved SN ever observed. The SN exploded in a highly magnified spiral galaxy at z = 1.49 behind the Frontier ...Fields cluster MACS1149, and provides a unique opportunity to study the environment of SNe at high z. We exploit the time delay between multiple images to determine the properties of the SN and its environment before, during, and after the SN exploded. We use the integral-field spectrograph MUSE on the VLT to simultaneously target all observed and model-predicted positions of SN Refsdal. We find Mg ii emission at all positions of SN Refsdal, accompanied by weak Fe ii* emission at two positions. The measured ratios of O ii to Mg ii emission of 10–20 indicate a high degree of ionization with low metallicity. Because the same high degree of ionization is found in all images, and our spatial resolution is too coarse to resolve the region of influence of SN Refsdal, we conclude that this high degree of ionization has been produced by previous SNe or a young and hot stellar population. We find no variability of the O ii line over a period of 57 days. This suggests that there is no variation in the O ii luminosity of the SN over this period, or that the SN has a small contribution to the integrated O ii emission over the scale resolved by our observations.
