Context.
Blazars are the most numerous class of high-energy (HE;
E
∼ 50 MeV−100 GeV) and very high-energy (VHE;
E
∼ 100 GeV−10 TeV) gamma-ray emitters. Currently, a measured spectroscopic redshift is ...available for only about 50% of gamma-ray BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs), mainly due to the difficulty in measuring reliable redshifts from their nearly featureless continuum-dominated optical spectra. The knowledge of the redshift is fundamental for understanding the emission from blazars, for population studies and also for indirect studies of the extragalactic background light and searches for Lorentz invariance violation and axion-like particles using blazars.
Aims.
This paper is the first in a series of papers that aim to measure the redshift of a sample of blazars likely to be detected with the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), a ground-based gamma-ray observatory.
Methods.
Monte Carlo simulations were performed to select those hard spectrum gamma-ray blazars detected with the
Fermi
-LAT telescope still lacking redshift measurements, but likely to be detected by CTA in 30 hours of observing time or less. Optical observing campaigns involving deep imaging and spectroscopic observations were organised to efficiently constrain their redshifts. We performed deep medium- to high-resolution spectroscopy of 19 blazar optical counterparts with the Keck II, SALT, and ESO NTT telescopes. We searched systematically for spectral features and, when possible, we estimated the contribution of the host galaxy to the total flux.
Results.
We measured eleven firm spectroscopic redshifts with values ranging from 0.1116 to 0.482, one tentative redshift, three redshift lower limits including one at
z
≥ 0.449 and another at
z
≥ 0.868. Four BL Lacs show featureless spectra.
Background

Methods
The effects of analgesics on tactile hypersensitivity were examined using the von Frey test in CEC and partial sciatic nerve ligation (pSNL) models. Effects on walking distance were assessed using a treadmill test. Levels of α2δ1 subunit and ATF‐3 mRNA in dorsal‐root ganglion (DRG) neurons and those of α2δ1 subunit protein in the spinal cord were determined using quantitative RT‐PCR and western blotting, respectively. Histological features were assessed using immunohistological methods.
Results
Histological changes indicating nerve damage (increase in ATF‐3 mRNA, decrease in NF‐200 and an increase in CD68 immunoreactivity) were observed in the CEC model. Duloxetine had analgesic effects in both models and improved walking distance in the CEC model. Pregabalin had analgesic effects in both models; however, the effect was weaker in the CEC model than in the pSNL model. α2δ1 subunit expression in DRG neurons and in the spinal cord was unchanged in the CEC model, but significantly increased in the pSNL model. Indomethacin had no analgesic effect in either model. Intrathecal yohimbine inhibited the effects of duloxetine with significant effects on depression.
Conclusions
These findings suggest that the analgesic effects of duloxetine are mainly mediated by the spinal monoamine system, independent of the antidepressant effects of this agent.
Significance
The findings of this study suggest that duloxetine may be an effective treatment of broad neuropathic pain states, including neuropathic low back pain. The analgesic effects of duloxetine might be mediated by alterations of the descending pain modulatory pathways in the spinal cord, independent of the antidepressant effects.
We present photometry and time series spectroscopy of the nearby Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) SN 2015F over -16 d to +80 d relative to maximum light, obtained as part of the Public ESO Spectroscopic ...Survey of Transient Objects. SN 2015F is a slightly sub-luminous SN Ia with a decline rate of ...m sub( 15)(B) = 1.35 plus or minus 0.03 mag, placing it in the region between normal and SN 1991bg-like events. Our densely sampled photometric data place tight constraints on the epoch of first light and form of the early-time light curve. The spectra exhibit photospheric C ii ...6580 absorption until -4 days, and high-velocity Ca ii is particularly strong at <-10 d at expansion velocities of ...23 000 km s super( -1). At early times, our spectral modelling with syn++ shows strong evidence for iron-peak elements (Fe ii, Cr ii, Ti ii, and V ii) expanding at velocities >14 000 km s super( -1), suggesting mixing in the outermost layers of the SN ejecta. Although unusual in SN Ia spectra, including V ii in the modelling significantly improves the spectral fits. Intriguingly, we detect an absorption feature at ~6800 A that persists until maximum light. Our favoured explanation for this line is photospheric Al ii, which has never been claimed before in SNe Ia, although detached high-velocity C ii material could also be responsible. In both cases, the absorbing material seems to be confined to a relatively narrow region in velocity space. The nucleosynthesis of detectable amounts of Al ii would argue against a low-metallicity white dwarf progenitor. We also show that this 6800 A feature is weakly present in other normal SN Ia events and common in the SN 1991bg-like sub-class. (ProQuest: ... denotes formulae/symbols omitted.)
Context. Blazars, which include BL Lacs and flat-spectrum radio quasars, represent the brightest persistent extragalactic sources in the high-energy (HE; 10 MeV–100 GeV) and very-high-energy (VHE; E ...> 100 GeV) γ -ray sky. Due to their almost featureless optical/UV spectra, it is challenging to measure the redshifts of BL Lacs. As a result, about 50% of γ -ray BL Lacs lack a firm measurement of this property, which is fundamental for population studies, indirect estimates of the extragalactic background light, and fundamental physics probes (e.g., searches for Lorentz-invariance violation or axion-like particles). Aims. This paper is the third in a series of papers aimed at determining the redshift of a sample of blazars selected as prime targets for future observations with the next generation, ground-based VHE γ -ray astronomy observatory, Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO). The accurate determination of the redshift of these objects is an important aid in source selection and planning of future CTAO observations. Methods. Promising targets were selected following a sample selection obtained with Monte Carlo simulations of CTAO observations. The selected targets were expected to be detectable with CTAO in observations of 30 h or less. We performed deep spectroscopic observations of 41 of these blazars using the Keck II, Lick, SALT, GTC, and ESO/VLT telescopes. We carefully searched for spectral lines in the spectra and whenever features of the host galaxy were detected, we attempted to model the properties of the host galaxy. The magnitudes of the targets at the time of the observations were also compared to their long-term light curves. Results. Spectra from 24 objects display spectral features or a high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N). From these, 12 spectroscopic redshifts were determined, ranging from 0.2223 to 0.7018. Furthermore, 1 tentative redshift (0.6622) and 2 redshift lower limits at z > 0.6185 and z > 0.6347 were obtained. The other 9 BL Lacs showed featureless spectra, despite the high S/N (≥100) observations. Our comparisons with long-term optical light curves tentatively suggest that redshift measurements are more straightforward during an optical low state of the active galactic nucleus. Overall, we have determined 37 redshifts and 6 spectroscopic lower limits as part of our programme thus far.
ABSTRACT
Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) make up about 35 per cent of the more than 250 sources detected in very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays to date with the imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. ...Apart from four nearby radio galaxies and two AGNs of unknown type, all known VHE AGNs are blazars. Knowledge of the cosmological redshift of gamma-ray blazars is key to enabling the study of their intrinsic emission properties, as the interaction between gamma rays and the extragalactic background light (EBL) results in a spectral softening. Therefore, the redshift determination exercise is crucial to indirectly placing tight constraints on the EBL density, and to studying blazar population evolution across cosmic time. Due to the powerful relativistic jets in blazars, most of their host galaxies’ spectral features are outshined, and dedicated high signal-to-noise (S/N) spectroscopic observations are required. Deep medium- to high-resolution spectroscopy of 33 gamma-ray blazar optical counterparts was performed with the European Southern Observatory, New Technology Telescope, Keck II telescope, Shane 3-metre telescope, and the Southern African Large Telescope. From the sample, spectra from 25 objects display spectral features or are featureless and have high S/N. The other eight objects have low-quality featureless spectra. We systematically searched for absorption and emission features and estimated, when possible, the fractional host galaxy flux in the measured total flux. Our measurements yielded 14 firm spectroscopic redshifts, ranging from 0.0838 to 0.8125, one tentative redshift, and two lower limits: one at $z > 0.382$ and the other at z > 0.629.
Background
Pain is a prominent feature of interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS), but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. There is a lack of well‐characterized ...research tools, such as pain evaluation methods and experimental animal models, for investigating non‐ulcerative cystitis. We developed a novel method for evaluating bladder pain in mice with cyclophosphamide (CYP)‐induced cystitis.
Methods
Cystitis was produced by a single intraperitoneal injection of CYP (300 mg/kg) or repeated injections of CYP (150 mg/kg once daily for 4 days). Blunt stimulation with a cotton probe was applied to the abdominal region, and the thresholds for withdrawal responses were measured quantitatively using an anaesthesiometer.
Results
The single injection of CYP provoked acute cystitis with severe bladder inflammation in mice. In these mice, we could detect an increased sensitivity to blunt stimulation, which was abolished by intravesical lidocaine. The stimulation induced phosphorylation of extracellular signal‐regulated kinases in bladder‐projecting sensory neurons. Chronic treatment with CYP produced persistent pain responses to the blunt stimulus. Although there were few signs of bladder inflammation in these mice, the concentration of nerve growth factor (NGF) was elevated in bladder tissue, and NGF antiserum inhibited the hypersensitivity.
Conclusions
The blunt probe method is useful for evaluating bladder pain signalling in mice, and revealed the involvement of an NGF‐sensitive pain pathway in chronic cystitis pain. This assessment method may be useful for studying the pathophysiology of bladder pain and for developing therapeutic strategies for non‐ulcerative IC/PBS in patients.
Blazars are the most numerous type of observed high-energy gamma-ray emitters. However, their emission mechanisms and population properties are still not well-understood. Crucial to this ...understanding are their cosmological redshifts, which are often not easy to obtain. This presents a great challenge to the next-generation ground-based observatory for very-high-energy gamma rays, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), which aims to detect a large number of distant blazars to study their intrinsic emission properties and to place tight constraints on the extragalactic background light density, amongst others. The successful investigation of these subjects needs a precise redshift determination. Motivated by these challenges, the CTA redshift task force initiated more than 3 years ago a spectroscopic observing program using some of the largest optical and infrared telescopes to measure the redshifts of a large fraction of blazars that are likely to be detected with CTA. In this proceedings, we give an overview of the CTA redshift task force, discuss some of the difficulties associated with measuring the redshifts of blazars and present our sample selection and observing strategies. We end the proceedings with reporting selected results from the program, the on-going collaborative efforts and our plans for the future.
A vibration technique was used to fabricate Ti–Al coatings. During mechanical milling, the sample surface was subjected to high-energy ball impacts. The powder particles trapped between the balls and ...substrate became cold-welded to the substrate surface. The repeated substrate-to-ball collisions flattened the particles and forged them onto the surface into a bulk material. The coating thickness and roughness can be optimized by the combinations of key factors such as the ball-to-powder weight ratio, milling duration, and ball size. The development of the coating structure is associated with the milling intensity. A Ti–Al coating formed rapidly as the milling intensity increased. Prolonged milling led to structural refinement of the top coating layer. The grain size may reach the nanometer scale under prolonged milling. The ball size was critical to coating formation.
Experimental study was conducted to clarify the formation behavior of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) from carbonaceous materials through a de novo ...synthesis route. Samples were prepared by changing mixing method and composite state of metallic chloride in graphite powder in order to simulate the texture of “unburned carbonaceous particles”, i.e., soot, formed in thermal processes. Reagents of KCl, CaCl2·2H2O, FeCl3·6H2O, and CuCl2·2H2O were used as chlorine sources and were added to graphite powder with different methods. The composite state of metallic chloride was varied by preliminary treatments: hand-mixing, mixed-grinding using a high-intensity ball mill, and preheating at different temperatures between 500 and 1100 °C. In the de novo experiment, reaction temperature and oxygen concentration of flowed gas were set at 300 °C and 2.5 mol %, respectively. During the experiment, formation rates of CO and CO2 and the formed amounts of organic chlorine and PCDD/Fs were measured. The results show a reasonable relation between the amount of formed organic chlorine and oxidation rate of carbon, and the order of the activity of metallic chlorines was obtained as KCl < CaCl2 < FeCl3 ≪ CuCl2. Furthermore, it was found that the effect of the composite state of metallic chloride on the formation of PCDD/Fs significantly depends on the kind of metal. The results will give useful information to examine the formation mechanism of PCDD/Fs from unburned carbon particles in thermal processes.
