Entrepreneurship is an important factor of potential growth and development that will determine the development dynamics of transition countries in the future. Starting from the theory of planned ...behaviour and the social cognition theory, the paper argues that bonding and bridging cognitive social capital may positively influence entrepreneurial intentions of young people in Croatia and Macedonia. The hypotheses were tested by using structural equation modelling. Our findings indicate that bridging and bonding social capital could be significant enhancers of entrepreneurial intention. The fact that those individuals who have poor bonding social capital may get their chance through bridging social capital seems as a good indicator. Bridging social capital that forms in an entrepreneurial environment can encourage young people in their self-employment efforts. Furthermore, our research implies several possible measures of enhancing the efficiency of entrepreneurial education.
The goal of this paper is to examine whether certain national cultural dimensions facilitate or hamper social entrepreneurship. The paper offers a conceptualisation of the possible associations ...between Hofstede's cultural dimensions and social entrepreneurial activity as defined by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, along with its empirical testing across more than 40 countries around the world. Based on correlation analysis that was controlled for the countries' level of economic development, there appears to be a negative association between the national power distance level and social entrepreneurial activity. In addition, the rate of young social entrepreneurial ventures is associated with lower levels of masculinity. The cultural dimensions of individualism and uncertainty avoidance have no direct linear association with social entrepreneurial activities of any kind. In factor-driven economies, lower levels of masculinity appear to support the development of social entrepreneurship. On the other hand, in innovation-driven economies, social entrepreneurial ventures emerge more often in those cultures characterised by short-term orientation and indulgence.
Svrha ovog istraživanja bila je ispitati povezanost obrazovanja za socijalno poduzetništvo i iskustva u prosocijalnom ponašanju s jedne strane s percepcijom poželjnosti i izvodljivosti socijalnog ...poduzetništva kod studenata poslovne ekonomije s druge strane. Uzorak koji čine studenti poslovne ekonomije izabran je imajući u vidu implikacije ovog istraživanja na nastavne planove poslovnog obrazovanja. Uzorkom je obuhvaćeno 512 studenata poslovne ekonomije na posljednjim godinama studija iz pet zemalja: Austrije, Bosne i Hercegovine, Hrvatske, Slovenije i Makedonije. Rezultati ukazuju na statistički značajnu pozitivnu povezanost između komponente „znati što“ obrazovanja za socijalno poduzetništvo te poželjnosti i izvodljivosti socijalnog poduzetništva. Komponenta „znati kako“ obrazovanja za socijalno poduzetništvo je statistički značajno pozitivno povezana s izvodljivošću socijalnog poduzetništva. Iskustvo u prosocijalnom ponašanju ima statistički značajnu pozitivnu povezanost kako s poželjnošću tako i s izvodljivošću socijalnog poduzetništva. Rezultati upućuju na to da bi obrazovanje za socijalno poduzetništvo trebalo uključivati stjecanje iskustava u volontiranju, aktivizmu i doniranju. Te aktivnosti usmjeravaju pažnju studenata na društvene probleme i osposobljavaju ih za njihovo rješavanje.
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to examine the association between social entrepreneurship education and experience in prosocial behaviour on the one hand and the perceived desirability and ...feasibility of social entrepreneurship among business students on the other. A sample consisting of business students was selected bearing in mind the possible implications of this study on business education curricula. The sample included 512 soon-to-graduate business students from five countries: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia and The Former Yugoslav Republic (FYR) of Macedonia. Our results indicate a statistically significant positive association between the “know what” component of social entrepreneurship education and both the desirability and the feasibility of social entrepreneurship. The “know how” component of social entrepreneurship education is statistically significantly positively associated with the feasibility of social entrepreneurship. Experience in prosocial behaviour has a statistically significant positive association with both the desirability and the feasibility of social entrepreneurship. Our results suggest that social entrepreneurship education programmes should include gaining some experience in volunteering, activism and making donations. These activities focus students’ attention on social problems and empower them to find proper solutions. While entrepreneurship research is usually focused on early-stage or established entrepreneurship, in this article we are taking a step back to earlier stages in the entrepreneurial process and focus ...on the opportunity identification and resources that might support it. The article provides a clearer insight into the extent of resources possessed by adults in Slovenia and Croatia, into gender differences in the opportunity identification process and the usage of resources within this process. Our research shows that women possess on average lower levels of resources, which explain their lower opportunity identification prevalence. Results show that the increase in resources, especially in the area of human capital consisting of skills, knowledge and experiences for entrepreneurship, has a significant and positive effect on opportunity identification among women.
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to examine the entrepreneurial intention of undergraduate and graduate students of Economics of Entrepreneurship and its predictors among students in different ...stages of their studies. The research is based on two sets of hypotheses. The first one sets out to confirm the basic assumptions of the theory of planned behavior in the context of the student population and the second one assumes a positive impact of the exposure to entrepreneurship education on students entrepreneurial intentions. The regression model confirmed the first set of hypotheses. The attitudes towards entrepreneurship have the greatest impact on entrepreneurial intentions, followed by perceived behavioral control and the subjective norm whose impact is the smallest. Results indicate that there are significant differences in the attitudes towards entrepreneurship and familiarity with entrepreneurial infrastructure among students in different stages of their studies. However, research has shown that entrepreneurial intentions do not increase due to exposure to entrepreneurship education.Key words: attitudes towards entrepreneurship; entrepreneurship program; familiarity with entrepreneurial infrastructure; perceived behavioral control; subjective norm.---SažetakSvrha ovog istraživanja jest ispitati poduzetničku namjeru studenata preddiplomskog i diplomskog studija Ekonomika poduzetništva i njezine prediktore kod studenata na različitim godinama studija. Istraživanje polazi od dva skupa hipoteza: prvog, koji je postavljen kako bi se potvrdile osnovne pretpostavke teorije planiranog ponašanja u kontekstu studentske populacije, i drugog, koji pretpostavlja postojanje pozitivnog utjecaja trajanja izloženosti poduzetničkome obrazovanju na poduzetničku namjeru studenata. Regresijskim modelom potvrđen je prvi skup hipoteza i utvrđeno je da najveći utjecaj na poduzetničku namjeru imaju stavovi prema poduzetništvu, slijedi percipirana kontrola ponašanja, a najmanji utjecaj ima subjektivna norma. Rezultati istraživanja ukazuju na postojanje statistički značajne razlike u stavovima prema poduzetništvu i poznavanju poduzetničke infrastrukture između studenata različitih godina studija. Međutim, istraživanje je pokazalo da se poduzetnička namjera uslijed izloženosti programu poduzetničkog obrazovanja ne povećava.Ključne riječi: program poduzetničkog obrazovanja; stavovi prema poduzetništvu; subjektivna norma; percipirana kontrola ponašanja; poznavanje poduzetničke infrastrukture.
The paper is the first part of the research that is aimed at measuring the impact of social entrepreneurial education on social entrepreneurial intention and its antecedents. The aim of this paper is ...to examine whether greater experience in philanthropic work and activism is associated with greater social entrepreneurship desirability and social entrepreneurship feasibility among the business students at the beginning of Social Entrepreneurship course. The results show that the students with more experience in philanthropic work perceive social entrepreneurship as more desirable. However, these experiences are not associated with perceiving social entrepreneurship as more feasible. On the other hand, the experience in activism is not associated with the perceived desirability of social entrepreneurship, but it does seem to strengthen one 's ability to gather a team of capable people to start a company that would solve a social problem.
Social entrepreneurship is a growing phenomenon, both in practice and in the scientific community. The main goal of this research is to examine specific personal characteristics that might support ...one's decision to pursue social entrepreneurship as a career choice. The research sample consisted of 114 students of two graduate entrepreneurship programs: Economics of Entrepreneurship at the Faculty of Organization and Informatics in Varazdin, University of Zagreb; and Entrepreneurship at the Faculty of Economics, Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek. Based on the scientific literature, we identified several potentially important personal characteristics: creativity, proactivity, compassionate love for humanity, hardship in life and moral judgement competence. These characteristics were adequately measured and compared between three groups of students: those that want to become commercial entrepreneurs, those that want to become social entrepreneurs, and those who have no entrepreneurial intentions. The methods we used were one-way ANOVA and factor analysis. Our results showed that the factor that differed the most between the observed groups was compassionate love for humanity. This factor might be the main driving force behind social entrepreneurial activities. Reprinted by permission of the Croatian Economics Association
In this paper, that is a country study of Slovenia, we tried to determine why individuals in rural residential areas are less likely to recognize entrepreneurial opportunities. Our results show that ...the increase in resources in human capital, consisting of education, skills, knowledge, and experiences in entrepreneurship, has a significant and positive effect on opportunity identification. For policy creators, our results suggest that policies focused on entrepreneurial education- especially education that would enable the acquisition of real-life entrepreneurial experiences and skills-are useful, especially in rural areas.
V prispevku, v katerem je predstavljena študija na primeru Slovenije, smo želeli odgovoriti na vprašanje, zakaj posamezniki iz ruralnih okolij v svojem okolju manj pogosto razpoznavajo poslovne priložnosti. Naši podatki kažejo, da ima povečanje virov človeškega kapitala, sestavljenega iz izobrazbe, znanja, izkušenj in sposobnosti za podjetništvo, pomemben in pozitiven vpliv na identificiranje poslovnih priložnosti. Za oblikovalce ukrepov ekonomske politike so naši rezultati pomembni, saj nakazujejo, da so politike, usmerjene v podjetniško izobraževanje (predvsem tisto, ki vključuje pridobivanje izkušenj in veščin v realnem podjetniškem okolju), koristne, in to predvsem na ruralnih območjih.
