We used data from the Advancing Understanding of Recovery after Trauma (AURORA) study to investigate prospective links between five factor model and impulsive personality traits and PTSD symptoms at baseline (N = 2943),three-months post-trauma (N = 2400), and one-year post-trauma (N = 1591) in individualsrecruited from emergency departments within 72 h of trauma exposure. Neuroticism and Negative Urgency bore the largest relations (rs > 0.30) to nearly all individual PTSD symptoms and symptom total at all time points. Neuroticism was an incremental predictor of every PTSD symptom at each time point. Low Agreeableness and low Conscientiousness were incremental predictorsof several PTSD symptoms. These findings highlight personality assessment as an efficient, effective screening tool for PTSD risk.
Systematic screening of depression in primary care settings that have adequate follow-up and treatment is recommended. The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) was developed as a depression screening ...measure for use in primary care. The PHQ-2, which includes just 2 items from the PHQ-9, is designed to be used as a first line depression screening measure, to be followed by the full PHQ-9 when a patient screens positive. However, completion of the first step in the process (PHQ-2) does not necessarily lead to completion of the second step (administration of the PHQ-9 when the PHQ-2 is positive), even when treatment and follow-up are available. The objective of the current study was to describe family medicine physicians' actions following a positive PHQ-2 and factors that affect their use of depression screening measures and treatment decisions. A retrospective chart review of 200 family medicine patients who screened positive on the PHQ-2 during an office visit was conducted. Additionally, 26 family medicine physicians in the practice were surveyed. Only 5% of patients with positive PHQ-2 scores were administered a PHQ-9. Physicians relied on their clinical judgment and prior knowledge about the patient's depression status to inform treatment decisions and cited time constraints and competing demands as reasons for not administered the PHQ-9. Physicians tended to treat depression with adequate doses of antidepressants and counseling. PHQ-2 screening did not necessarily lead to further evaluation, systematic follow-up, or changes in treatment. Implications for the implementation of depression screening in primary care settings are discussed.
Water within and surrounding the structure of a biological system adopts context-specific dynamics that mediate virtually all of the events involved in the inner workings of a cell. These events ...range from protein folding and molecular recognition to the formation of hierarchical structures. Water dynamics are mediated by the chemistry and geometry of interfaces where water and biomolecules meet. Here we investigate experimentally and computationally the translational dynamics of vicinal water molecules within the volume of a supramolecular peptide nanofiber measuring 6.7 nm in diameter. Using Overhauser dynamic nuclear polarization relaxometry, we show that drastic differences exist in water motion within a distance of about one nanometer from the surface, with rapid diffusion in the hydrophobic interior and immobilized water on the nanofiber surface. Furthermore, these results demonstrate that water associated with materials designed at the nanoscale is not simply a solvent, but rather an integral part of their structure and potential functions.

Following several years of testing and evaluation, the American Community Survey (ACS) was launched in 2005 as a replacement for the census "long form," used to collect detailed social, economic, and ...housing data from a sample of the U.S. population as part of the decennial census. During the first year of the ACS implementation, the Census Bureau collected data only from households. In 2006 a sample of group quarters (GQs)-such as correctional facilities, nursing homes, and college dorms-was added to more closely mirror the design of the census long-form sample.
The design of the ACS relies on monthly samples that are cumulated to produce multiyear estimates based on 1, 3, and 5 years of data. The data published by the Census Bureau for a geographic area depend on the area's size. The multiyear averaging approach enables the Census Bureau to produce estimates that are intended to be robust enough to release for small areas, such as the smallest governmental units and census block groups. However, the sparseness of the GQ representation in the monthly samples affects the quality of the estimates in many small areas that have large GQ populations relative to the total population. The Census Bureau asked the National Research Council to review and evaluate the statistical methods used for measuring the GQ population.
This book presents recommendations addressing improvements in the sample design, sample allocation, weighting, and estimation procedures to assist the Census Bureau's work in the very near term, while further research is conducted to address the underlying question of the relative importance and costs of the GQ data collection in the context of the overall ACS design.
