Abstract Purpose The aim of this follow-up study was to report the long-term outcome of all-ceramic cantilever resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs). Materials and methods In 16 patients ...(mean age of 33.3 ± 17.5 years) 22 RBFDPs made from a glass-infiltrated alumina ceramic (In-Ceram) were inserted with a phosphate monomer containing luting agent after air-abrasion of the retainer wings. The abutment preparation included a shallow groove on the cingulum and a small proximal box. The restorations replacing 16 maxillary and 6 mandibular incisors were followed over a mean observation time of 188.7 months. Results No restoration debonded. Two RBFDPs fractured and were lost 48 and 214 months after insertion, respectively. The 10-year and 15-year survival rates were both 95.4% and dropped to 81.8% after 18 years. Conclusion Anterior all-ceramic cantilever RBFDPs exhibited an excellent clinical longevity.
This clinical study evaluated the outcome and survival rate of resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) made of 3Y-TZP zirconia ceramic with a single-retainer design in the replacement of ...missing canines, premolars and molars.
Twenty-one patients that were provided with twenty-seven cantilevered zirconia ceramic RBFDPs replacing maxillary or mandibular missing canines or posterior teeth were recruited from the patients’ database at the University of Kiel, Germany. The preparation of the abutment teeth was minimal and limited to the enamel and consisted of a retainer wing and an occlusal rest on the abutment tooth. The restorations were observed over up to 12 years.
The patient age ranged from 16 to 72 years old with a mean age of 34 ± 21 years and 57% were females and 43% were males. The restorations were observed for a mean period of 53 ± 39 months with a minimum of 13 months and a maximum of 151 months of observation. No debonding for any of the restorations was detected, which amounts up to a survival rate of 100%. The development of treatable cervical caries on one abutment tooth of an elderly patient without extending to the retainer wing was the only recorded complication.
Zirconia ceramic single-retainer RBFDPs provide an esthetic, functional and minimally invasive treatment alternative to replace missing canines, premolar and molars with promising results due to excellent clinical outcome resulting from a survival rate of 100% and a success rate of 96.3% over a mean observation time of 53 ± 39 months.
Zirconia ceramic single-retainer RBFDPs might be a valid minimally-invasive option for replacing missing canines and missing teeth in the posterior area especially for young patients, in whom implants are contraindicated and conventional fixed dental prostheses are too invasive.

In addition, whether the reason for missing incisors has an influence on the longevity of RBFDPs was analyzed.
One hundred and eight zirconia ceramic cantilever RBFDPs were provided for 87 patients. Seventy-five RBFDPs replaced maxillary incisors and 33 mandibular incisors. The restorations were subsequently categorized into 3 groups according to the reasons for missing teeth (congenitally missing, trauma and other reasons). The patients were followed up annually, and the restorations were assessed for function and aesthetics. The mean observation time of the RBFDPs was 92.2±33months.
Six debondings and 1 loss of restoration were recorded. The lost restoration was removed at the patient’s request after a small chip occurred on the mesial edge of the pontic. Three of the 6 observed debondings were caused by traumatic incidents. All debonded RBFDPs were rebonded successfully with no further complications. Zirconia ceramic RBFDPs yielded a 10-year survival rate of 98.2% and a success rate of 92.0%.
Anterior zirconia ceramic cantilever RBFDPs provided excellent clinical longevity. The reasons for missing incisors did not influence the longevity of the cantilever RBFDPs.
Abstract Objective The purpose of the study was the evaluation of the bond strength of a provisional resin to a polyetheretherketon (PEEK) using different surface treatments and conditioning methods. ...Methods PEEK disks were polished with 600 grit rotating silicon carbide papers. Plexiglas tubes were filled and bonded with a provisional resin (Luxatemp Fluorescence) to the PEEK disks which were air-abraded either with 110 μm alumina particles (Rocatec Pre) and conditioned with the primers Ecusit Composite Repair, Luxatemp Glaze & Bond or Clearfil Ceramic Primer or they were tribochemically silica-coated (Rocatec Plus) and silanated with Espe Sil or Clearfil Ceramic Primer. Air-abraded PEEK disks without priming served as control. Subgroups of 8 specimens each were stored in distilled water at 37 °C either for 3 days without thermal cycling (TC) or for 150 days with additional 37,500 thermal cycles between 5 and 55 °C (dwell time 30 s). Following storage tensile bond strength (TBS) was tested at a crosshead speed of 2 mm/min in a universal testing machine. Statistical analysis was conducted with Kruskal–Wallis test followed by Wilcoxon rank sum test adjusted by Bonferroni–Holm. Results After 3 days TBS ranged from 0 to 15.0 MPa. After artificial aging over 150 days TBS ranged from 0 to 12.9 MPa. Using air-abrasion and priming with Luxatemp Glaze & Bond resulted in significantly higher TBS than all other methods, which was also durable over time. Conclusion The use of the methylmethacrylate containing primer Luxatemp Glaze & Bond after air-abrasion of PEEK surfaces can be recommended clinically as promising bonding method to PEEK.
Brown fat activates uncoupled respiration in response to cold temperature and contributes to systemic metabolic homeostasis. To date, the metabolic action of brown fat has been primarily attributed ...to its role in fuel oxidation and uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1)-mediated thermogenesis. Whether brown fat engages other tissues through secreted factors remains largely unexplored. Here we show that neuregulin 4 (Nrg4), a member of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family of extracellular ligands, is highly expressed in adipose tissues, enriched in brown fat and markedly increased during brown adipocyte differentiation. Adipose tissue Nrg4 expression was reduced in rodent and human obesity. Gain- and loss-of-function studies in mice demonstrated that Nrg4 protects against diet-induced insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis through attenuating hepatic lipogenic signaling. Mechanistically, Nrg4 activates ErbB3 and ErbB4 signaling in hepatocytes and negatively regulates de novo lipogenesis mediated by LXR and SREBP1c in a cell-autonomous manner. These results establish Nrg4 as a brown fat-enriched endocrine factor with therapeutic potential for the treatment of obesity-associated disorders, including type 2 diabetes and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Abstract Objectives This study evaluated the clinical outcome of all-ceramic resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) with a cantilevered single-retainer design made from zirconia ceramic. ...Methods Forty-two anterior RBFDPs with a cantilevered single-retainer design were made from yttrium oxide-stabilized zirconium oxide ceramic. RBFDPs were inserted using Panavia 21 TC as luting agent after air-abrasion of the ceramic bonding surface. Results During a mean observation time of 61.8 months two debondings occurred. Both RBFDPs were rebonded using Panavia 21 TC and are still in function. A caries lesion was detected at one abutment tooth during recall and was treated with a composite filling. Therefore, the overall six-year failure-free rate according to Kaplan–Meier was 91.1%. If only debonding was defined as failure the survival rate increased to 95.2%. Since all RBFDPs are still in function the overall survival rate was 100% after six years. Conclusions Cantilevered zirconia ceramic RBFDPs showed promising results within the observation period. Clinical Significance Single-retainer resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses made from zirconia ceramic show very good mid-term clinical survival rates. They should therefore be considered as a viable treatment alternative for the replacement of single missing anterior teeth especially as compared to an implant therapy.

The association between obesity and impaired insulin sensitivity has long been recognized, although a subgroup of obese individuals seems to be protected from insulin resistance. In this study, we ...systematically studied differences in adipose tissue biology between insulin-sensitive (IS) and insulin-resistant (IR) individuals with morbid obesity. On the basis of glucose infusion rate during euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamps, 60 individuals with a BMI of 45 +/- 1.3 kg/m(2) were divided into an IS and IR group matched for age, sex, and body fat prior to elective surgery. We measured fat distribution, circulating adipokines, and parameters of inflammation, glucose, and lipid metabolism and characterized adipose tissue morphology, function, and mRNA expression in abdominal subcutaneous (sc) and omental fat. IS compared with IR obese individuals have significantly lower visceral fat area (138 +/- 27 vs. 316 +/- 91 cm(2)), number of macrophages in omental adipose tissue (4.9 +/- 0.8 vs. 13.2 +/- 1.4%), mean omental adipocyte size (528 +/- 76 vs. 715 +/- 81 pl), circulating C-reactive protein, progranulin, chemerin, and retinol-binding protein-4 (all P values <0.05), and higher serum adiponectin (6.9 +/- 3.4 vs. 3.4 +/- 1.7 ng/ml) and omental adipocyte insulin sensitivity (all P values <0.01). The strongest predictors of insulin sensitivity by far were macrophage infiltration together with circulating adiponectin (r(2) = 0.98, P < 0.0001). In conclusion, independently of total body fat mass, increased visceral fat accumulation and adipose tissue dysfunction are associated with IR obesity. This suggests that mechanisms beyond a positive caloric balance such as inflammation and adipokine release determine the pathological metabolic consequences in patients with obesity.
