The front-end electronics of the ATLAS hadronic calorimeter (Tile Cal) is housed in a unit, called
PMT-Block. The PMT-Block is a compact instrument comprising a light mixer, a PMT together with its ...divider and a
3-in-1 card, which provides shaping, amplification and integration for the signals. This instrument needs to be qualified before being assembled on the detector. A PMT-Block test bench has been developed for this purpose. This test bench is a system which allows fast, albeit accurate enough, measurements of the main properties of a complete PMT-Block. The system, both hardware and software, and the protocol used for the PMT-Blocks characterization are described in detail in this report. The results obtained in the test of about 10
000 PMT-Blocks needed for the instrumentation of the ATLAS (LHC-CERN) hadronic Tile Calorimeter are also reported.
The possibility for a collimated one-mode laser beam used as a fiducial line is considered. The technology for an “extended” laser beam formation and application for a much-extended fiducial line is ...proposed.
The energy spectrum and the cross section of photonuclear interactions of 180 GeV muons in iron were measured at the CERN SPS using prototype modules of the ATLAS hadron calorimeter. The differential ...cross section \((N_{A}/A)v{d}\sigma/{d}v\) for a muon fractional energy loss \(v = \Delta E_{\mu} / E_{\mu}\) was measured in the range 0.1<v<1. The integrated cross section \((N_{A}/A) \int_{0.1}^{1} v{d}\s igma/{d}v\) is \((0.26 \pm 0.03_{stat} \pm 0.03_{syst})\cdot 10^{-6}\) cm2g-1 in agreement with the theoretical prediction of \(0.267 \cdot 10^{-6}\) cm2g-1. The best adjustment of the data to the theory is achieved for the value of \(\sigma_{\gamma N} = (115 \pm 18_stat \pm 15_{syst})\mu {b}\) of the photon-nucleon cross section for photons with energies in the range from 18 to 180 GeV.
Based on the two Higgs doublet model, we study the effect of Higgs-boson
exchange on the (super)heavy quarkonium \bar QQ, which induces a strong
attractive force between a (super)heavy quark Q and an ...antiquark \bar Q. An
interesting application is the decay of (super)heavy quarkonia \bar QQ into a
Higgs boson associated with gauge bosons. The criterion for making the \bar QQ
bound state is studied. We also show that non-perturbative effects due to
gluonic field fluctuations are rather small in such a heavy quark sector.
Possible enhancement for productions and decays of \bar QQ bound states made
from the fourth generation quark Q is discussed for \bar p p (at the Tevatron)
and pp (at the LHC) collisions.
