We present the goals and preliminary results of an unbiased, near-infrared, narrow-band imaging survey of the first galactic quadrant (10° < l < 65°; −1
3 < b < +1
3). This area includes most of the ...giant molecular clouds and massive star forming regions in the Northern hemisphere. The survey is centred on the 1-0 S(1) rovibrational line of H2, a proven tracer of hot, dense molecular gas in star-forming regions, around evolved stars, and in supernova remnants. The observations complement existing and upcoming photometric surveys (Spitzer-GLIMPSE, UKIDSS-GPS, JCMT-JPS, AKARI, Herschel Hi-GAL, etc.), though we probe a dynamically active component of star formation not covered by these broad-band surveys. Our narrow-band survey is currently more than 60 per cent complete. The median seeing in our images is 0.73 arcsec. The images have a 5σ detection limit of point sources of K∼ 18 mag and the surface brightness limit is 10−19 W m−2 arcsec−2 when averaged over our typical seeing. Jets and outflows from both low- and high-mass young stellar objects are revealed, as are new planetary nebulae and - via a comparison with earlier K-band observations acquired as a part of the UKIDSS GPS - numerous variable stars. With their superior spatial resolution, the UWISH2 data also have the potential to reveal the true nature of many of the extended green objects found in the GLIMPSE survey.
The radiological characteristics of World Health Organization grade III oligodendroglial tumours in relation to chromosome 1p and 19q deletions were analysed.
56 patients recently diagnosed with ...anaplastic oligodendroglioma (AO, n=49) or anaplastic oligoastrocytoma (AOA, n=7) were studied. Their preoperative magnetic resonance images were examined. Deletions of chromosome 1p and 19q were determined using the fluorescence in situ hybridisation method. Both 1p and 19q chromosomes had deletions (1p19q codeletion) in 39 patients (36 AO and 3 AOA).
Tumors associated with the 1p19q codeletion were predominantly located in the frontal lobe (p=0.044). The magnetic resonance image characteristics of indistinct tumour borders (p=0.005 on T1, p=0.036 on T2) and a heterogeneous intratumoural signal intensity (p=0.033 on T1, p=0.041 on T2) were significantly correlated with the 1p19q codeletion. Analysis of patient survival showed those with the 1p19q-co-deleted tumours survived significantly longer than those lacking the 1p19q codeletion (p=0.042). The presence of a heterogeneous signal intensity in T2-weighted images, a characteristic significantly related to the 1p19q codeletion, indicated a favourable prognosis for patients' survival (HR; 0.125, 95% CI, 0.016 to 0.963, p=0.046) based on multivariate analysis.
A relationship between radiological characteristics and molecular signatures in AO/AOAs was shown. It is believed that radiological characteristics have prognostic value as a surrogate marker for molecular characteristics.
To realize the full benefits of treatment as prevention in many hyperendemic African contexts, there is an urgent need to increase uptake of HIV testing and HIV treatment among men to reduce the rate ...of HIV transmission to (particularly young) women. This trial aims to evaluate the effect of two interventions - micro-incentives and a tablet-based male-targeted HIV decision support application - on increasing home-based HIV testing and linkage to HIV care among men with the ultimate aim of reducing HIV-related mortality in men and HIV incidence in young women.
This is a cluster randomized trial of 45 communities (clusters) in a rural area in the uMkhanyakude district of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa (2018-2021). The study is built upon the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI)'s HIV testing platform, which offers annual home-based rapid HIV testing to individuals aged 15 years and above. In a 2 × 2 factorial design, individuals aged ≥15 years living in the 45 clusters are randomly assigned to one of four arms: i) a financial micro-incentive (food voucher) (n = 8); ii) male-targeted HIV specific decision support (EPIC-HIV) (n = 8); iii) both the micro incentives and male-targeted decision support (n = 8); and iv) standard of care (n = 21). The EPIC-HIV application is developed and delivered via a tablet to encourage HIV testing and linkage to care among men. A mixed method approach is adopted to supplement the randomized control trial and meet the study aims.
The findings of this trial will provide evidence on the feasibility and causal impact of two interventions - micro-incentives and a male-targeted HIV specific decision support - on uptake of home-based HIV testing, linkage to care, as well as population health outcomes including population viral load, HIV related mortality in men, and HIV incidence in young women (15-30 years of age).

The association of perivascular spaces in the centrum semiovale with amyloid accumulation among patients with Alzheimer disease-related cognitive impairment is unknown. We evaluated this association ...in patients with Alzheimer disease-related cognitive impairment and β-amyloid deposition, assessed with
F florbetaben PET/CT.
MR imaging and
F florbetaben PET/CT images of 144 patients with Alzheimer disease-related cognitive impairment were retrospectively evaluated. MR imaging-visible perivascular spaces were rated on a 4-point visual scale: a score of ≥3 or <3 indicated a high or low degree of MR imaging-visible perivascular spaces, respectively. Amyloid deposition was evaluated using the brain β-amyloid plaque load scoring system.
Compared with patients negative for β-amyloid, those positive for it were older and more likely to have lower cognitive function, a diagnosis of Alzheimer disease, white matter hyperintensity, the
ε4 allele, and a high degree of MR imaging-visible perivascular spaces in the centrum semiovale. Multivariable analysis, adjusted for age and
status, revealed that a high degree of MR imaging-visible perivascular spaces in the centrum semiovale was independently associated with β-amyloid positivity (odds ratio, 2.307; 95% CI, 1.036-5.136;
= .041).
A high degree of MR imaging-visible perivascular spaces in the centrum semiovale independently predicted β-amyloid positivity in patients with Alzheimer disease-related cognitive impairment. Thus, MR imaging-visible perivascular spaces in the centrum semiovale are associated with amyloid pathology of the brain and could be an indirect imaging marker of amyloid burden in patients with Alzheimer disease-related cognitive impairment.
To compare the biomechanical properties of three different sternal closure techniques in a 3D-printed bone model of a sternum from a 30-kg dog.
Median sternotomy was performed on a total of 90 ...three-dimensional (3D) copies of a polycarbonate (PC) model of a sternum, generated from the CT images of the sternum of a 30-kg German Shepherd dog. Three different methods were used to repair the sternotomies: polydioxanone suture (group PDS, n = 30), stainless steel bone staples (group SS, n = 30), and nitinol bone staples (group NS, n = 30). Each repair method was tested by applying tensile force in one of three ways (longitudinally, laterally, or torsionally) resulting in a sample size of n = 10 for each repair method-loading combination. In all experiments, the loads at 1-mm and 2-mm gap formation, failure, and the displacement at the failure point were measured.
In lateral distraction and longitudinal shear tests, NS and SS staple repairs required application of significantly greater force than PDS across all displacement criteria (1 and 2 mm). NS exhibited significantly greater failure load than PDS. In torsion tests, NS required significantly greater application of force compared to SS or PDS at all displacement criteria (1 and 2 mm) and exhibited a greater failure load than PDS. In terms of displacement at failure point, PDS suture showed more displacement than SS or NS across all experiments (laterally, longitudinally, torsionally).
In this study, bone staples were mechanically superior to PDS suture in median sternotomy closure using 3D-printed bone model in terms of 1-mm, 2-mm displacement loads, and displacement at failure. NS had a higher failure load than PDS under lateral, longitudinal, and torsional distraction.
These study results imply that bone staples can be considered as an alternative surgical method for median sternotomy closure in dogs.

Abstract Gravity‐wave (GW) parameterizations from 12 general circulation models (GCMs) participating in the Quasi‐Biennial Oscillation initiative (QBOi) are compared with Strateole 2 balloon ...observations made in the tropical lower stratosphere from November 2019–February 2020 (phase 1) and from October 2021–January 2022 (phase 2). The parameterizations employ the three standard techniques used in GCMs to represent subgrid‐scale non‐orographic GWs, namely the two globally spectral techniques developed by Warner and McIntyre (1999) and Hines (1997), as well as the “multiwaves” approaches following the work of Lindzen (1981). The input meteorological fields necessary to run the parameterizations offline are extracted from the ERA5 reanalysis and correspond to the meteorological conditions found underneath the balloons. In general, there is fair agreement between amplitudes derived from measurements for waves with periods less than h and parameterizations. The correlation between the daily observations and the corresponding results of the parameterization can be around 0.4, which is significant, since 1200 days of observations are used. Given that the parameterizations have only been tuned to produce a quasi‐biennial oscillation (QBO) in the models, the 0.4 correlation coefficient of the GW momentum fluxes is surprisingly good. These correlations nevertheless vary between schemes and depend little on their formulation (globally spectral versus multiwaves for instance). We therefore attribute these correlations to dynamical filtering, which all schemes take into account, whereas only a few relate the gravity waves to their sources. Statistically significant correlations are mostly found for eastward‐propagating waves, which may be due to the fact that during both Strateole 2 phases the QBO is easterly at the altitude of the balloon flights. We also found that the probability density functions (pdfs) of the momentum fluxes are represented better in spectral schemes with constant sources than in schemes (“spectral” or “multiwaves”) that relate GWs only to their convective sources.
Background
As Korea has experienced rapid economic development, the lifestyles of Koreans have become more Westernized, in terms of urbanization and dietary habits. Also, the prevalences of allergic ...diseases, such as rhinitis, asthma, and dermatitis, have increased rapidly. This study aimed to identify the factors influencing the symptoms of rhinitis conditions, including rhinitis, allergic rhinitis, overlapped rhinitis, and overlapped allergic rhinitis, among Korean children aged 6–7 years.
Methods
The study subjects were drawn from participants in the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) study in 2010 and were aged 6–7 years. We analysed data for a total of 3804 children.
Results
The prevalences of symptoms suggestive of rhinitis and allergic rhinitis in the previous 12 months were 43.4% and 22.1%, respectively. For overlapped rhinitis and overlapped allergic rhinitis, only 2.5% and 1.9% of the children had overlapping symptoms, having rhinitis with asthma and eczema simultaneously. Gender, a parental history of allergic disease, mould or dampness at home, and the risk factors for ‘sick building syndrome’ (SBS) were risk factors influencing rhinitis diseases. In particular, a history of moving to a newly built home in the child's infancy was strongly associated with symptoms of all the rhinitis diseases examined.
Conclusions
This study identified patterns of the prevalence of rhinitis conditions among Korean children that were similar to those reported in Western countries. We confirmed that a history of moving to a newly built home during infancy was associated with a considerable risk of rhinitis conditions.
Abstract
In this nationwide cohort study, we assessed the effects of hypertension burden and blood pressure (BP) control on dementia in different age subgroups. From the Korean National Health ...Insurance Service-Health Screening cohort from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2013, we enrolled 428,976 subjects aged 40–79 years without previous diagnosis of dementia or stroke. During a mean follow-up of 7.3 ± 1.5 years, 9435 (2.2%) were diagnosed with dementia. Per 10 mmHg increase in systolic BP (SBP), risk of dementia was increased by 22% (95% confidence interval CI 1.15–1.30) in subjects aged 40–59 years and 8% (95% CI 1.04–1.11) in subjects aged 60–69 years. No significant associations were observed in subjects aged ≥ 70 years. Among subjects aged 40–59 years, both vascular and Alzheimer’s dementia risks were increased with increasing SBP. Increasing hypertension burden (proportion of days with increased BP) was associated with higher dementia risk (hazard ratio HR 1.09 per 10% increase, 95% CI 1.08–1.10). Among patients with baseline SBP ≥ 140 mmHg, optimal follow-up SBP (120–139 mmHg) was associated with decreased dementia risk (HR 0.69, 95% CI 0.50–0.95). Hypertension burden was associated with higher risks of dementia. Adequate BP control was associated with lower risk of dementia in individuals aged < 70 years.
