Myocardial ischaemia resulting from obstructive coronary artery disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the developed world. Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery is the ...gold-standard treatment in many patients with complex multivessel coronary artery disease or left main disease. Despite substantial improvements in the outcome of patients undergoing CABG surgery in the past decade, graft patency remains the 'Achilles' heel' of this procedure. Whereas the use of the left internal mammary artery as a conduit is associated with the highest 10-year patency rate (>90%), saphenous vein grafts - the most commonly used conduit in CABG surgery - fail in 40-50% of treated patients by 10 years after surgery. Vein graft disease (VGD) and failure result from complex pathophysiological processes that can lead to complete occlusion of the graft, affecting long-term clinical outcomes. Optimal harvesting techniques, intraoperative preservation strategies and intraoperative patency control have important roles in the prevention of VGD. In addition, several studies published in the past decade have reported similar mid-term patency rates between vein grafts and arterial grafts when veins are used as a composite graft based on the internal mammary artery. In this Review, we present the latest evidence on the utilization of saphenous vein grafts for CABG surgery and provide an overview of the current practices for the prevention of VGD and vein graft failure.

Biodiesel produced from WCO (Canola oil) mainly composed of FAMEs in following order C18:1 > C18:2 > C16:0 > C18:0 > C20:0. Properties of produced biodiesel were analysed as cetane number (CN) 50.56, higher heating value (HHV) 39.5, kinematic viscosity (ʋ) 3.9, and density (ρ) 0.87.
To be competitive in offshore wind energy production, safe and economical foundation design is essential. In recent years, tripod suction bucket foundations have been considered as an alternative to ...conventional foundations owing to their unique features suitable for offshore construction environments, economic installation, and high overturning resistance. However, it is difficult to accurately predict the behavior of tripod foundation because the load acting on the tripod is complex in HVM (i.e., horizontal, vertical, and moment loads) and the response varies depending on the size and direction of the load. Moreover, it is harder to analyze because the effects of cyclic loads must be considered in an offshore environment. This study, therefore, has investigated the behavior of the tripod suction bucket foundation under cyclic loadings. To analyze the complex responses of the tripod foundation in detail, the overall behavior of the tripod foundation system was observed based on the compression–pullout behavior of a single bucket. Moment–rotation responses, the cyclic stiffness, and permanent displacements of the tripod foundation are evaluated by analyzing the vertical behavior of the single‐bucket foundations as well as the rotational behavior of the tripod foundation. A number of centrifuge model tests were carried out with different loading conditions (i.e., loading amplitudes and directions). It was confirmed that the cyclic behavior of the tripod bucket foundation is significantly affected by loading amplitudes and directions. Furthermore, this study emphasized the importance of considering load characteristics when designing the tripod foundation.
Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) is an established biomarker of adverse outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Several cross-sectional studies have suggested a possible ...association between FGF23 and anemia in these patients. In this large-scale prospective cohort study, we investigated this relationship and examined whether high FGF23 levels increase the risk of incident anemia. This prospective longitudinal study included 2,089 patients from the KoreaN cohort study for Outcome in patients With CKD. Anemia was defined as hemoglobin level <13.0 g/dl (men) and <12.0 g/dl (women). Log-transformed FGF23 significantly correlated with hepcidin but inversely correlated with iron profiles and hemoglobin. Multivariate logistic regression showed that log-transformed FGF23 was independently associated with anemia (odds ratio OR, 1.14; 95% confidence interval CI, 1.04-1.24, P = 0.01). Among 1,164 patients without anemia at baseline, 295 (25.3%) developed anemia during a median follow-up of 21 months. In fully adjusted multivariable Cox models, the risk of anemia development was significantly higher in the third (hazard ratio HR, 1.66; 95% CI, 1.11-2.47; P = 0.01) and fourth (HR, 1.84; 95% CI, 1.23-2.76; P = 0.001) than in the first FGF23 quartile. In conclusion, high serum FGF23 levels were associated with an increased risk for anemia in patients with nondialysis CKD.

Integration of metal nanoparticles (NPs) in proximity to the InGaN/GaN-based individual nanorod light-emitting diodes (nano-LEDs) can provide a platform to improve the emission efficiency through localized surface plasmon (LSP) coupling effect. This work evaluates an optimizing process for fabricating self-assembled Ag NPs on the surface of horizontally aligned individual nano-LEDs via thermal evaporation/dewetting techniques. The closely integrated Ag NPs on each nano-LED accelerate a strong LSP energy coupling efficiency of 70 % with a fast decay lifetime of 2.04 ns. The self-assembled Ag NPs/nano-LEDs exhibit nearly 130 % and 290 % enhancement in electroluminescent and cathodoluminescent performance compared with reference nanorod LEDs. Furthermore, numerical simulation is performed to correlate the degree of LSP coupling effect concerning changes in particle size and inter-particle distance between the Ag NPs. Thus, the realization of self-assembled Ag NPs/nano-LEDs can prove the concept of the idea to enhance emission efficiency suitable for next-generation display technology.
New coreless transmitting (Tx) coils with a conductive material plate for wide-range ubiquitous inductive power transfer (IPT) zones, i.e., U-IPT zones, where electric devices can be wirelessly ...charged during operation, are proposed in this paper. Because commercialized IPT systems are only available for short distances of several centimeters and one-to-one charging, the demand is increasing for U-IPT zones in which long-distance wireless charging with three-dimensional (3-D) free-positioning and simultaneous charging of multiple receiving (Rx) coils can be achieved. To satisfy this demand, U-IPT zones should be constructed to have a uniform magnetic field distribution in a wide space, which also poses no risk to the human body. In addition, to generate a uniform magnetic field in a wide 3-D space, such as a single room, the system requires the installation of many Tx coils above the ceilings and behind the walls of the room, and these coils should be capable of high electrical performance to support the efficiency of the entire IPT system and should be of excellent mechanical quality. Therefore, a U-IPT zone should meet the following four criteria: human safety, free-positioning of Rx coils, magnetic field uniformity, and economization. By virtue of a conductive material plate that cancels out the undesired direction of magnetic flux generated from the return wires, the proposed coreless Tx coil does not need any heavy ferromagnetic cores, which can cause nonuniformity of the magnetic field distribution and difficult construction. A prototype coreless Tx coil with the dimensions of 1 m × 1 m × 10 cm was fabricated and experimentally verified for a 1 m × 1 m U-IPT zone. The experimental results showed that 74%, 83%, and 76% high magnetic field uniformity could be achieved for <inline-formula><tex-math notation="LaTeX">z_{1}= {{25}}</tex-math></inline-formula> cm, 50 cm, and 75 cm, respectively, and a 3-D omnidirectional wireless power delivery was achieved, while the guideline of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection for human safety was satisfied throughout the entire U-IPT zone. Moreover, the weight of the entire system was only 9 kg, enabling easy installation. In the multiple wireless charging experiments, 47 W of power was consumed in total by load resistors, each of them connected to nine Rx coils, respectively, with 32% power efficiency at <inline-formula><tex-math notation="LaTeX">z_{1}= {{20}}</tex-math></inline-formula> cm.
Among low-risk patients with severe, symptomatic aortic stenosis who are eligible for both transcatheter aortic-valve implantation (TAVI) and surgical aortic-valve replacement (SAVR), data are ...lacking on the appropriate treatment strategy in routine clinical practice.
In this randomized noninferiority trial conducted at 38 sites in Germany, we assigned patients with severe aortic stenosis who were at low or intermediate surgical risk to undergo either TAVI or SAVR. Percutaneous- and surgical-valve prostheses were selected according to operator discretion. The primary outcome was a composite of death from any cause or fatal or nonfatal stroke at 1 year.
A total of 1414 patients underwent randomization (701 to the TAVI group and 713 to the SAVR group). The mean (±SD) age of the patients was 74±4 years; 57% were men, and the median Society of Thoracic Surgeons risk score was 1.8% (low surgical risk). The Kaplan-Meier estimate of the primary outcome at 1 year was 5.4% in the TAVI group and 10.0% in the SAVR group (hazard ratio for death or stroke, 0.53; 95% confidence interval CI, 0.35 to 0.79; P<0.001 for noninferiority). The incidence of death from any cause was 2.6% in the TAVI group and 6.2% in the SAVR group (hazard ratio, 0.43; 95% CI, 0.24 to 0.73); the incidence of stroke was 2.9% and 4.7%, respectively (hazard ratio, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.35 to 1.06). Procedural complications occurred in 1.5% and 1.0% of patients in the TAVI and SAVR groups, respectively.
Among patients with severe aortic stenosis at low or intermediate surgical risk, TAVI was noninferior to SAVR with respect to death from any cause or stroke at 1 year. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), such as poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), have emerged as potential alternatives to petroleum-based plastics and can be produced through the appropriate selection of marine ...bacteria that are already adapted to high salt and low temperature conditions without the requirement of antibiotic treatment. The present study, thus, aimed to screen and characterize thirteen PHA-producing microbial strains isolated from the Gwangalli beach in Busan, South Korea. Among them, Halomonas sp. YLGW01 produced the highest amount of PHB (94.6 ± 1.8% (w/w)) using fructose. Interestingly Halomonas sp. YLGW01 showed increase in cell size (8.39 ± 3.63 μm) with fructose as carbon source as compared to glucose (2.34 ± 0.44 μm). Fructose syrup was investigated as carbon source under unsterilized conditions and 95.26 ± 1.78% of PHB was produced. Overall, this strain showed the highest PHB contents in halotolerant bacteria.
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is strongly associated with depression, especially in women. This study was designed to investigate the gender-specific association between DM and depressive mood by family ...history of diabetes. Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a population-based cross-sectional survey in 2020, were used. Of 6,133 participants aged 19 years or older, 4,259 participants were included after excluding participants without data of laboratory or physical examination, medical or family history of diseases, or depression scores of Patient Health Questionnaire–9. We examined associations of glucose and insulin metabolism, and DM with depressed mood by sex and family history of diabetes using logistic regression analyses with three stepwise models. In men, fasting glucose and HbA1c (odds ratio OR: 1.25, 95% confidence interval CI: 1.10, 1.42) levels were significantly associated with depressed mood. Men with DM and a family history of diabetes were also significantly associated with depressed mood (OR: 1.84, 95% CI: 1.12, 3.05), whereas DM without a family history showed no association. In women, glucose and insulin metabolism had no associations with depressed mood, and DM was also not associated with depressed mood regardless of a family history of diabetes. In Korean adults, DM with a family history of diabetes and glucose metabolism showed significant associations with depressed mood in men, but not in women. Our results suggest that men with both DM and a family history of diabetes should be paid more attention to depressed moods, considering ethnic characteristics.
To measure the electromagnetic properties of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) in the X-band, 1-port measurements were performed using a lens horn antenna in a free-space measurement system. ...Free-space 1-port calibration with translations of the position of the reflector regarding the characteristics of the focused beam lens horn antenna was applied. The intrinsic impedance and complex permittivity of the SFRC were obtained from the measured reflection characteristics. The steel fiber content increased and the electromagnetic properties of the SFRC gradually changed from a dielectric to a conductor, even in very low frequencies compared to the plasma frequencies of general metal, which are optical frequencies. This is considered to be the plasmon effect of the metallic structure formed by the steel fiber. This result is applicable for analyses of the electromagnetic phenomenon of large structures with fiber content.
