The hydrologic cycle is a system far from thermodynamic equilibrium that is characterized by its rate of entropy production in the climatological mean steady state. Over land, the hydrologic cycle is ...strongly affected by the presence of terrestrial vegetation. In order to investigate the role of the biota in the hydrologic cycle, it is critical to investigate the consequences of biotic effects from this thermodynamic perspective. Here I quantify entropy production by evapotranspiration with a climate system model of intermediate complexity and estimate its sensitivity to vegetation cover. For present-day conditions, the global mean entropy production of evaporation is 8.4 mW/m2/K, which is about 1/3 of the estimated entropy production of the whole hydrologic cycle. On average, ocean surfaces generally produce more than twice as much entropy as land surfaces. On land, high rates of entropy production of up to 16 mW/m2/K are found in regions of high evapotranspiration, although relative humidity of the atmospheric boundary layer is also an important factor. With an additional model simulation of a "Desert" simulation, where the effects of vegetation on land surface functioning is removed, I estimate the sensitivity of these entropy production rates to the presence of vegetation. Land averaged evapotranspiration decreases from 2.4 to 1.4 mm/d, while entropy production is reduced comparatively less from 4.2 to 3.1 mW/m2/K. This is related to the reduction in relative humidity of the atmospheric boundary layer as a compensatory effect, and points out the importance of a more complete treatment of entropy production calculations to investigate the role of biotic effects on Earth system functioning.

Photosynthese versorgt das Leben auf der Erde mit Energie. Allerdings ist der beobachtete Wirkungsgrad der biologischen Energieerzeugung wesentlich geringer als etwa die Umwandlung von Sonnenlicht in elektrische Energie in Photovoltaikanlagen. Warum ist das so? Die Antwort liefert die Thermodynamik – aber nicht so direkt, wie man zunächst vermuten könnte. Zum Verständnis braucht man einen Blick auf das gesamte Ökosystem und wie dieses mit der Atmosphäre Kohlenstoff und Wasser austauscht.

Aim: Two of the oldest observations in plant geography are the increase in plant diversity from the poles towards the tropics and the global geographic distribution of vegetation physiognomy ...(biomes). The objective of this paper is to use a process-based vegetation model to evaluate the relationship between modelled and observed global patterns of plant diversity and the geographic distribution of biomes. Location: The global terrestrial biosphere. Methods: We implemented and tested a novel vegetation model aimed at identifying strategies that enable plants to grow and reproduce within particular climatic conditions across the globe. Our model simulates plant survival according to the fundamental ecophysiological processes of water uptake, photosynthesis, reproduction and phenology. We evaluated the survival of an ensemble of 10,000 plant growth strategies across the range of global climatic conditions. For the simulated regional plant assemblages we quantified functional richness, functional diversity and functional identity. Results: A strong relationship was found (correlation coefficient of 0.75) between the modelled and the observed plant diversity. Our approach demonstrates that plant functional dissimilarity increases and then saturates with increasing plant diversity. Six of the major Earth biomes were reproduced by clustering grid cells according to their functional identity (mean functional traits of a regional plant assemblage). These biome clusters were in fair agreement with two other global vegetation schemes: a satellite image classification and a biogeography model (kappa statistics around 0.4). Main conclusions: Our model reproduces the observed global patterns of plant diversity and vegetation physiognomy from the number and identity of simulated plant growth strategies. These plant growth strategies emerge from the first principles of climatic constraints and plant functional trade-offs. Our study makes important contributions to furthering the understanding of how climate affects patterns of plant diversity and vegetation physiognomy from a process-based rather than a phenomenological perspective.
Zusammenfassung Im Vergleich zu erneuerbaren Energien sind Kernkraftwerke deutlich teurer in den Stromgestehungskosten. Pro Kilowatt Leistung sind Kernkraftwerke zudem über die letzten Jahrzehnte ...immer teurer geworden, während die Erneuerbaren immer günstiger wurden. Außerdem wird durch das variable Einspeisen aus Sonne und Wind die verbleibende Netzlast geringer, die noch gedeckt werden muss. Die verbleibenden Lücken in der Stromerzeugung lassen sich gut durch Gaskraftwerke schließen. Diese haben wesentlich geringere Investitionskosten als Kernkraftwerke. Sollten die gegenwärtigen Trends bei der Wasserverfügbarkeit im Zuge des Klimawandels anhalten, dann könnte zudem der Mangel an Kühlwasser den Beitrag von thermischen Kraftwerken an der Stromerzeugung einschränken, vor allem in den trockenen Sommermonaten. Insbesondere die Kernenergie steht also vor zwei Problemen: Sie ist sehr teuer und bietet in künftigen, trockenen Sommern keine Versorgungssicherheit mehr.
Generally, surface and air temperatures seem closely related but we show that they respond differently to evaporative conditions. We evaluate the temperature increase in response to solar radiation ...for different evaporative fractions, using observations from the Southern Great Plains. The warming rate of air temperature decreases only by 1.7 × 10−3 K/(W m−2) from dry to moist conditions compared to a stronger reduction by 14 × 10−3 K/(W m−2) for surface temperature. The weaker response of air temperature to evaporative fraction is explained by the larger growth of boundary layer on drier days, which suppresses the warming of air. Estimates based on this explanation reproduce the warming rate of air temperature in observations. Our results show that diurnal variations of surface temperatures contain imprints of evapotranspiration while air temperatures do not. These findings appear important to be considered when using, analyzing, or interpreting temperature data in studies dealing with climate change, hydrology, or land‐atmosphere interactions.
Plain Language Summary
Surface and air temperatures are measured just 2 m apart, so it might seem that they carry the same information. Here we show that these temperature measurements respond rather differently to whether the surface evaporates or not. To show this, we use data from a well‐equipped measurement site in the Central United States and calculate the rates by which the surface and the air warm in response to solar radiation. We found that the surface temperature responds about 8 times stronger to evaporation than air temperature. We explain this weaker response of air temperature by the stronger growth of the boundary layer without evaporation. This results in a deeper, well‐mixed boundary layer that does not warm as strongly. What our results imply is that evaporation may be inferred from surface temperatures, but not from air temperatures.

Energy balance models suggest that the atmospheric circulation operates close to a state of maximum entropy production. Here we support this hypothesis with sensitivity simulations of an atmospheric ...general circulation model. A state of maximum entropy production is obtained by (i) adjusting boundary layer turbulence and (ii) using a sufficiently high model resolution which allows sufficient degrees of freedom for the atmospheric flow. The state of maximum entropy production is associated with the largest conversion of available potential energy into kinetic energy which is subsequently dissipated by boundary layer turbulence. It exhibits the largest eddy activity in the mid latitudes, resulting in the most effective transport of heat towards the poles and the least equator‐pole temperature difference. These results suggest that GCMs have a fundamental tendency to underestimate the magnitude of atmospheric heat transport and, therefore, overestimate the equator‐pole temperature gradient for the present‐day climate, for the response to global climatic change, and for atmospheres of other planetary bodies.
The rapid increase in world's installed wind energy capacity may have masked the power loss caused by declining global surface wind speed (termed ‘global stilling’), particularly for China with huge ...wind energy investments. Here, we estimated the potential impact of global stilling on wind energy production in China, using data from 1226 meteorological stations between 1971 and 2015. We show that surface wind speeds have on average declined at a rate of 5.5% decade−1, while the corresponding wind power density dropped by 24.5% decade−1. Although the decline in wind speeds has slowed after 1991, the decline in wind power density did not show this slowdown. This was attributed to the absence of slowdown in the declining trend of strong winds. Compared with the wind speed levels in the 2000s, the mean capacity factor would have dropped from 20.7% in 2001 to 14.9% in 2015, with the largest absolute change in the “Three North” regions. Furthermore, wind electricity generation would have declined by 40 TWh/a using the installed capacity of 2015, representing a decrease of 16%. The correlation analysis indicates that the decreased wind speed is most likely caused by changes in the large-scale atmospheric circulation rather than increased surface roughness.

Die Verbrennung von fossilen Energieträgern hat den atmosphärischen Treibhauseffekt verstärkt, was zur Erderwärmung führt. Doch woher wissen wir, dass der Treibhauseffekt einen so ...entscheidenden Einfluss auf das Klima hat? Alternativ könnte auch eine ansteigende Sonnenaktivität hinter der Erwärmung stecken. Doch ein erhöhter Treibhauseffekt wirkt sich anders auf das Erdklima aus als eine verstärkte Sonneneinstrahlung. Charakteristisch für den Treibhauseffekt ist zum Beispiel, dass sich die kälteren Regionen in Richtung der Pole stärker erwärmen, obwohl sie geringerer Solarstrahlung ausgesetzt sind. Warum das so ist, lässt sich mit einer relativ einfachen Energiebilanz zeigen, die wesentlichen Terme der Erwärmung und Kühlung berücksichtigt. Dieser Artikel stellt diesen Ansatz vor und demonstriert damit, dass die Oberflächentemperatur wesentlich vom Treibhauseffekt bestimmt wird.
Der globale Klimawandel nimmt Fahrt auf. Aber woher wissen wir eigentlich, dass er durch den Treibhauseffekt verursacht wird und nicht durch eine aktiver werdende Sonne? Einfache physikalische Überlegungen zeigen, warum sich Änderungen im Treibhauseffekt anders auf Erwärmungsmuster niederschlagen als Änderungen in der Solarstrahlung. Daran kann man den menschengemachten Klimawandel klar erkennen.
