The CMS offline computing system is composed of roughly 80 sites (including most experienced T3s) and a number of central services to distribute, process and analyze data worldwide. A high level of ...stability and reliability is required from the underlying infrastructure and services, partially covered by local or automated monitoring and alarming systems such as Lemon and SLS; the former collects metrics from sensors installed on computing nodes and triggers alarms when values are out of range, the latter measures the quality of service and warns managers when service is affected. CMS has established computing shift procedures with personnel operating worldwide from remote Computing Centers, under the supervision of the Computing Run Coordinator at CERN. This dedicated 24/7 computing shift personnel is contributing to detect and react timely on any unexpected error and hence ensure that CMS workflows are carried out efficiently and in a sustained manner. Synergy among all the involved actors is exploited to ensure the 24/7 monitoring, alarming and troubleshooting of the CMS computing sites and services. We review the deployment of the monitoring and alarming procedures, and report on the experience gained throughout the first two years of LHC operation. We describe the efficiency of the communication tools employed, the coherent monitoring framework, the proactive alarming systems and the proficient troubleshooting procedures that helped the CMS Computing facilities and infrastructure to operate at high reliability levels.

This study documents the reliability and validity of a new infant–toddler authentic assessment, the Learning Through Relating Child Assets Record (LTR-CAR), and its feasibility of use by infant–toddler caregivers in an Early Head Start program. In a sample of 136 children, results indicated a strong internal structure of the LTR-CAR as evidenced by high internal consistency within age bands, expected performance in terms of the order of difficulty of items, and expected performance relative to the chronological ages of children. Moreover, the LTR-CAR accounted for a statistically significant amount of unique variance (between 6 and 26%), over and above age and gender, in six out of eight regressions predicting criterion measures. Given the increasing numbers of infants and toddlers in non-parental care, the need for authentic assessment as a tool to plan meaningful learning opportunities, as well as the lack of evidence-based authentic assessment options at the infant–toddler level, the LTR-CAR may provide a viable option for the field.
The CMS data acquisition system is designed to build and filter events originating from 476 detector data sources at a maximum trigger rate of 100 kHz. Different architectures and switch technologies ...have been evaluated to accomplish this purpose. Events will be built in two stages: the first stage will be a set of event builders called front-end driver (FED) builders. These will be based on Myrinet technology and will pre-assemble groups of about eight data sources. The second stage will be a set of event builders called readout builders. These will perform the building of full events. A single readout builder will build events from about 60 sources of 16 kB fragments at a rate of 12.5 kHz. In this paper, we present the design of a readout builder based on TCP/IP over Gigabit Ethernet and the refinement that was required to achieve the design throughput. This refinement includes architecture of the readout builder, the setup of TCP/IP, and hardware selection.
We report the observation of B{sub s}{sup 0}-B{sub s}{sup 0} oscillations from a time-dependent measurement of the B{sub s}{sup 0}-B{sub s}{sup 0} oscillation frequency {delta}m{sub s}. Using a data ...sample of 1 fb{sup -1} of pp collisions at {radical}(s)=1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, we find signals of 5600 fully reconstructed hadronic B{sub s} decays, 3100 partially reconstructed hadronic B{sub s} decays, and 61 500 partially reconstructed semileptonic B{sub s} decays. We measure the probability as a function of proper decay time that the B{sub s} decays with the same, or opposite, flavor as the flavor at production, and we find a signal for B{sub s}{sup 0}-B{sub s}{sup 0} oscillations. The probability that random fluctuations could produce a comparable signal is 8x10{sup -8}, which exceeds 5{sigma} significance. We measure {delta}m{sub s}=17.77{+-}0.10(stat){+-}0.07(syst) ps{sup -1} and extract vertical bar V{sub td}/V{sub ts} vertical bar =0.2060{+-}0.0007({delta}m{sub s}){sub -0.0060}{sup +0.0081}({delta}m{sub d}+theor)
In this white paper for the 2021 Snowmass process, we give a description of the proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC) project and its physics program. The paper summarizes and updates the ...discussion submitted to the European Strategy on Particle Physics. After construction of an approximately 90 km tunnel, an electron-positron collider based on established technologies allows world-record instantaneous luminosities at center-of-mass energies from the Z resonance up to tt thresholds, enabling a rich set of fundamental measurements including Higgs couplings determinations at the sub percent level, precision tests of the weak and strong forces, and searches for new particles, including dark matter, both directly and via virtual corrections or mixing. Among other possibilities, the FCC-ee will be able to (i) indirectly discover new particles coupling to the Higgs and/or electroweak bosons up to scales around 7 and 50 TeV, respectively; (ii) perform competitive SUSY tests at the loop level in regions not accessible at the LHC; (iii) study heavy-flavor and tau physics in ultra-rare decays beyond the LHC reach, and (iv) achieve the best potential in direct collider searches for dark matter, sterile neutrinos, and axion-like particles with masses up to around 90 GeV. The tunnel can then be reused for a proton-proton collider, establishing record center-of-mass collision energy, allowing unprecedented reach for direct searches for new particles up to the around 50 TeV scale, and a diverse program of measurements of the Standard Model and Higgs boson, including a precision measurement of the Higgs self-coupling, and conclusively testing weakly-interacting massive particle scenarios of thermal relic dark matter.
We report the observation and measurement of the mass of the bottom, strange baryon Xi-_b through the decay chain Xi-_b --> J/psi Xi-, where J/psi --> mu+ mu-, Xi- --> Lambda pi+-, and Lambda --> p ...pi+-, and Lambda --> p pi+-. Evidence for observation is based on a signal whose probability of arising from the estimated background is 6.6 x 10-15, or 7.7 Gaussian standard deviations. The Xi-_b mass is measured to be 5792.9 +/- 2.5 (stat.) +/-1.7 (syst.) MeV/c2.

This collaboration is aiming at a ...consistent and coordinated study of vector-boson scattering from the phenomenological and experimental point of view, for the best exploitation of the data that will be delivered by existing and future particle colliders.
Factor XI (FXI) deficiency is an uncommon autosomal disorder with variable bleeding phenotype, making peripartum management challenging. We describe our experience in pregnant women with FXI ...deficiency and identify strategies to minimize the use of hemostatic agents and increase utilization of neuraxial anesthesia. Electronic records of 28 pregnant women with FXI deficiency seen by a hematology service in an academic medical center from January 2006 to August 2018 were reviewed. Data on bleeding, obstetric history, peripartum management, and FXI activity were collected. Partial FXI deficiency was defined as >20 IU/dL and severe <20 IU/dL. Median FXI activity was 42 IU/dL (range <1-73 IU/dL), and median activated partial thromboplastin time was 32.2 seconds (range: 27.8-75 seconds). There were 64 pregnancies: 53 (83%) live births and 11 (17%) pregnancy losses. Postpartum hemorrhage occurred in 9 (17%) pregnancies. Antifibrinolytic agents and fresh frozen plasma were used only in women with severe deficiency (42% with bleeding and 17% with no bleeding phenotype, respectively). Neuraxial anesthesia was successfully administered in 32 (59%) deliveries. Most women with FXI deficiency have uncomplicated pregnancies and deliveries with minimal hemostatic support. Neuraxial anesthesia can be safely administered in most women.
